Alan Burwell

Alan Burwell (birth registered January→March 1943 (age 72–73)

[1]) birth registered in Hull district, was an English rugby league footballer for the Hull Kingston Rovers, Canterbury Bulldogs, and for the Great Britain national side.

Alan was one of Hull Kingston Rovers outstanding British three-quarters of the 1960s. He joined the “Robins” from local Amateur Rugby League in 1961 and went on to make 229 full appearances, plus 4 substitute appearances, scoring 106 tries, 2-conversions, for 322-points. He scored Hull K.R.’s only try (playing Stand-off/Five-eighth) in their 1964 Wembley Cup Final defeat by Widnes.

Alan’s first international honours were playing for Great Britain Under-24s against France at Bayonne in 1966, and he made his Test début as a substitute against Australia in the 1967 Ashes series. In addition he went on to play in seven further full internationals for Great Britain, including those on the 1968 World Cup tour which qualified him as a Lion. Pen pictures of this Hull K.R. favourite always gave his profession as a Chemist.

Alan Burwell played Scrum-half/Halfback, and scored a try in Hull Kingston Rovers' 25–12 victory over Featherstone Rovers in the 1966 Yorkshire Cup final during the 1966–67 season at Headingley, Leeds on Saturday 15 October 1966, played Left-Wing, i.e. number 5, and scored a try in the 8–7 victory over Hull in the 1967 Yorkshire Cup final during the 1967–68 season at Headingley, Leeds on Saturday 14 October 1967, and played Centre, i.e. number 3, in Hull Kingston Rovers's 11-15 defeat by Leeds in the 1975 Yorkshire Cup final during the 1975–76 season at Headingley Stadium, Leeds on Saturday 15 November 1975.
