The 2016 Poinsettia Bowl is college football bowl game scheduled to be played on December 21, 2016 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California. The twelfth edition of the Poinsettia Bowl will feature the BYU Cougars against a team from the Mountain West Conference. It will begin at 6:00 PM PST and air on ESPN. It will be one of the 2016–17 bowl games that will conclude the 2016 FBS football season. Sponsored by San Diego County Credit Union, the game is officially known as the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl.[1]
Teams
The game will feature the BYU Cougars against a team from the Mountain West Conference.
BYU Cougars
On November 6, 2013, it was announced that BYU would participate in the 2016 and 2018 Poinsettia Bowls should they be bowl eligible and not selected for one of the College Football Playoff bowl games.[2]
After their 37–7 victory over the Southern Utah Thunderbirds to improve their record to 6–4 and become bowl-eligible, bowl director Ted Tollner extended an invitation for the Cougars to play in the game, which they accepted.[3]
This will be the Cougars' second Poinsettia Bowl appearance, following their victory over the San Diego State Aztecs in the 2012 Poinsettia Bowl by a score of 23–6.
Mountain West team
CBS Sports writer Jerry Palm and SB Nation writer Jason Kirk (as of November 28) have both projected that the Wyoming Cowboys would be the other team selected for the game.[4][5]
