Rafael Nadal was the eight-time defending champion, but was defeated in the final by Novak Djokovic 2–6, 6–7(1–7), bringing an end to Nadal's 46-match winning streak at the event.[1] As a result, Djokovic became the first man ever to win singles titles at 8 of the 9 Masters 1000 series tournaments.
