The 1999–2000 Charlotte Hornets season was Charlotte's 12th season in the National Basketball Association.[1] Despite finishing the previous season with a 26–24 record, the Hornets had the third pick in the 1999 NBA draft and selected UCLA point guard Baron Davis. The Hornets were competitive through the first half of the season finishing with a respectable 27–20 record heading into the All-Star break. However, tragedy struck on January 12, 2000 when guard Bobby Phills was killed in an automobile accident while racing with teammate David Wesley, who had a suspended license at the time;[2][3] the Hornets then retired his #13 jersey on February 9 during a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers, which Phills used to play for.

Despite the loss of Phills, the Hornets finished the first half of the season strong as Eddie Jones was selected for the 2000 NBA All-Star Game. The Hornets finished the season with a 49–33 record, and qualified for their fifth playoff appearance. They faced the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round, but were eliminated three games to one. The Hornets finished eleventh the NBA in attendance for the season. Following the season, Jones and Anthony Mason were both traded to the Miami Heat, and Dale Ellis retired after being waived by the Heat.
