Season 1891–92 was the 19th Scottish football season in which Dumbarton competed at a national level, entering the Scottish Football League for the second time, and the Scottish Cup for the 19th time.

Overview

Dumbarton retained the Scottish League Championship with 37 points, 2 ahead of runners-up Celtic. In the process a 100% home record in league fixtures was maintained.^[1] In addition John Bell finished as league top goalscorer for the second season running, with 19 goals to his credit.

In the Scottish Cup, Dumbarton lost out to their old rivals Queen's Park in the seventh round, after a 2-2 draw.

In other competitions, Dumbarton retained the Dumbartonshire Cup, again beating Vale of Leven in the final, but in the Greenock Charity Cup were defeated by the hosts Morton in the final. After a gap of three years, Dumbarton were again invited to take part in the Glasgow Charity Cup, but lost out to Celtic in the semi final.

During the season, 6 'other' matches were played, including an 8-0 thrashing of Celtic. Of these matches, 3 were won, 1 drawn and 2 lost, scoring 22 goals and conceding 14.

Note that the overall unbeaten home record extended into a second successive season. In addition, Dumbarton scored 124 goals in all matches during the season, the fifth season in a row and the seventh time in the club's history that the 'century' had been broken.

Four Dumbarton players were selected to play for Scotland in the 1892 British Home Championship.

John Bell earned his second cap against England, and John McLeod earned his fourth cap in the same game. Bell scored Scotland's goal in the 4-1 defeat.

John Taylor and William Thomson both earned their first caps against Wales, with Thomson scoring a goal in the 6-1 win.

In addition, John Bell, Dickie Boyle, John McLeod and John Taylor were all selected to play in the first Scottish League XI against the English League - the game finishing in a 2-2 draw, with Bell scoring one of the goals.

Other Representative

On 30 May 1892, a Scottish League select played a Scottish Alliance XI. John Miller was selected to play in the 'League' team and scored twice in the 4-3 win.

Reserve Team

Dumbarton reached the semi final of the Scottish Second XI Cup before losing out to Annbank after a 2-2 draw, but again retained the Dumbartonshire Second XI Cup, beating Smithston Hibs in the final.
