Takbirut Tashreeq

Takbirut Tashreeq is the recitation of Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar, Laa Ilaaha Illallaahu Wallaahu Akbar, Allaahu Akbar Wa Lillaahil Hamd.

Time

Takbirut Tashreeq stretches over five days, from Fajr of 9 Dhu al-Hijjah until after Asr of 13 Dhu al-Hijjah.

Origin

Ibrahim was ordered by God to sacrifice his son Isma'il. When Ibrahim began moving the knife on Isma'il, the angels were sent with a ram (kabsh?) from Jannah. The angels exclaimed: Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar (God is the Greatest, God is the Greatest). Ibrahim heard the voice of the angels and said: "La Ilaha Illallahu Wallahu Akbar" (There is none worthy of worship besides God and God is the Greatest).

Isma'il heard this conversation and realized that God had relieved him from this great trial and so he said: "Allahu Akbar Wa Lillahil Hamd" (God is the Greatest and to God belongs all praise).

Compulsory recitation

It is compulsory (wajib) for every adult (Baaligh) Muslim to recite Takbirut Tashreeq audibly after every fard salah from Fajr of 9 Dhu al-Hijjah until after Asr of 13 Dhu al-Hijjah. Women will recite it softly. Takbirut Tashreeq will be recited for a total of 23 fard salah as well as for the Eid al-Adha Salah. Takbirut Tashreeq will be read after every fard salah, whether the salah was performed individually or in congregation.

Limit

Takbirut Tashreeq should be recited once after every fard salaah from Fajr of 9 Dhu al-Hijjah to Asr 13 Dhu al-Hijjah.

Manner

  • Women will read Takbirut Tashreeq softly. Men will read it loudly
  • Takbirut Tashreeq will be read after congregational prayer as well as individual prayer (munfarid)
  • Takbirut Tashreeq must be read immediately after the fardh salah. It cannot be made up later and one should repent to God for forgetting a wajib action.
  • Should the imam of the salah omit Takbirut Tashreeq, the follower/s (Muqtadi/s) will immediately commence its recitation
