History

In 1916 Greek immigrant brothers Menelaos & George Kaloyanides started the New England Tea & Coffee Company. Originally located in a building at the corner of Milk and Broad Streets in Boston, hand-roasted coffee was delivered by horse and wagon along the streets of Boston. The first gasoline-powered truck was purchased in 1918 and soon after other family members started to join the growing business.

In 1966, after outgrowing several homes in succession, New England Coffee finally settled into their present location at 100 Charles Street in Malden, Massachusetts. Today, New England Coffee occupies five buildings and has hugely expanded their manufacturing and packaging capabilities.

As a testament to the family legacy, four generations of the Kaloyanides family have led the business since its inception; Menelaos Kaloyanides from 1916 to 1966, Stephen Kaloyanides from 1966 to 1996, James M. Kaloyanides from 1996 to 2013 and James B. Kaloyanides from 2013 to 2016. The Kaloyanides family has travelled extensively throughout the world's coffee growing regions - James B. eventually spent over half of a year in Costa Rica learning every aspect of the coffee trade from the foremost experts, including cultivation, harvesting and trading of the commodity. The Kaloyanides family name has become synonymous with the ultimate expertise in the coffee business.

Basil "Lucky" Kaloyanides, father of James M. Kaloyanides and grandfather of James B. Kaloyanides was inducted to the Massachusetts Restaurant Association Hall of Fame and was a beloved and well respected owner of the company. Basil was instrumental in the tutelage of his two sons, James M. and Michael W., along with his grandson, James B. regarding the values of the business - these included quality, honesty, and ensuring the customer was completely satisfied. Over the years, many customers were astonished to realize the person that paid a visit was Lucky himself, an owner who wanted to personally follow up on a service call, to ensure that the customer was completely satisfied.

New England Coffee only uses 100% Arabica beans throughout the entire product line. New England Coffee offers coffee varietals, blends, flavored coffees and full-bodied dark roasts with coffee beans from locations such as Colombia, Sumatra, Brazil and Costa Rica.
