Shop Talk Tonight!

Sat Oct 24 20:49:14 2020

Hi all,

Shop Talk will be live tonight! Fable Siegel and Ashley Nichols will be talking with Spike Trotman (artist, author and entrepreneur behind Iron Circus Comics) about launching and funding your indie project!

All parties involved have a lot to say on this topic, so it ought to be a pretty animated discussion (pun somewhat intended). I hope it will be a help to anyone out there looking to get their project off the ground too. As usual, we'll also be taking questions from the chat.

-----------------------------
Time: 5pm PT / 8pm ET today, Saturday, October 24th

Place: Lackadaisy YouTube

-----------------------------
(I'll be there too, lurking in the background working on book edits.)

Lackachat Saturday

Fri Sep 18 00:02:10 2020

Hey all,

Times are rough and everything is on fire, so the Lackacrew has decided to lighten things up a bit, with a good old fashioned donnybrook.

Several of the voice actors will be joining us Saturday, in character, for a game night! We'll answer audience questions along the way too. It looks like there may also be a very special, spooky mystery guest among us - they've not made an appearance yet, but you'll no doubt recognize the voice!

When: Saturday, September 19th starting at 1pm PT / 4pm ET

Where: The Lackadaisy Discord and the Lackadaisy YouTube Channel (take your pick!)

JOIN US.

I mean...join us, shall you?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Many thanks to Kazoodle for the art!

Tonika Pantoja (StringBing, Trolls, How to Train Your Dragon 3, Wish Dragon) will be joining Fable Siegel and I live to talk about animation education, making your own animated short films, and creating a pitch! We'll be answering questions from the audience too, of course.

When: Saturday, September 5th, starting at 8:30pm CT/6:30pm PT
Where: Lackadaisy YouTube

I hope we'll see you there! =D

Hey everyone,

We've got a live chat + UNO game scheduled tonight with the film crew!
We'll be chatting and answering questions like usual, but as an added bonus - behold the slaughter!
...The very civil, sportsmanlike slaughter. >_>

Where: The Lackadaisy Discord (Lackachat Radio / #lackachat channel)

When: Tonight, Sunday the 16th, starting at 6pm PT/9pm ET

It ought to be a fun time. Hope you can join us!

Upcoming Lackachat

Wed Jul 22 23:00:00 2020

Hey all,

The next Live Chat has been scheduled!

Where: Lackadaisy Discord Server - Lackachat Radio / #lackachat

When: Sunday, July 26th beginning at 5pm Pacific Time / 8pm Eastern

This time, we're spotlighting Storyboard Artists and Animators as guests, so if you're curious about the project, what the art crew has been up to, or if you have questions for them, please bring them with you! Some of the VAs will likely swing by as well.

If you aren't able to make it, you can submit questions here in the comments or to the #lackachat Discord channel and I'll make sure we address them in the recorded session.

That aside, we plan on doing a lot of laughing and I hope we'll see you there!

Shop Talk Stream

Thu Jul 2 22:02:43 2020

Hey all,

Worthikids will be joining Fable and I to talk about animation, being an independent creator and related topics in a live streaming chat this weekend!

When: Sunday, July 5th, starting at 5pm CT (3pm Pacific)

Where: The Lackadaisy YouTube Channel

I'm not sure Worthi needs an introduction! If you've spent any time on the internet, you've almost certainly encountered some of their work before, but just in case you haven't, it's a delight, and you can find it here!

The point of the chat will largely to be answer questions, so if you have any, please feel free to hop in and ask them!

We'll be streaming this to YouTube starting tomorrow, Saturday, June 20th, at 8pm Central Time / 6pm Pacific.

Animation Dev Log

Fri May 8 01:38:51 2020

Hey all,

We've set up a dev log site to chronicle the progress of the Lackadaisy animated film! I will continue to post extras and early-looks at things here for Patrons (more soon), but this blog will encompass the director's thoughts, things they'd like to share, and sundry Kickstarter related updates too. The next article will be up shortly, along with the cast list!

(For KS backers, you will receive important updates via Kickstarter notifications as well, so following the dev log is, of course, optional.)

-------------------------------

The film crew has got some fun streaming stuff coming up this Saturday evening too. I'll post details shortly, for anyone who might want to join us!

Lackadaisy Epithet

Fri Apr 17 18:21:26 2020

I was hoping to be able to finish a longer version of this page, but just how much chaos a Kickstarter involves took me a bit by surprise. I'm grateful for the support (to the point of near shock), but I'm also looking forward to a return to some degree of normalcy.
Thanks so for bearing with me, everyone! Sorry if I spammed your Twitter feed.

On that related note, the Kickstarter ends today. There are just a few hours left! If you had any intention to, now's the last chance to pledge for the various backer rewards!

0171.jpg 0171.jpg

Kickstarter is Live!

Mon Mar 16 16:02:01 2020

The Kickstarter for the Lackadaisy animated short film has just launched!

The main backer reward for this campaign is the Lackadaisy Essentials mini-comic, art and tutorial collection in hardcover.

Also, if you watch the KS video all the way through, you'll see an animatic of a scene-in-progress.

I'm sorry for the lack of forewarning. We had to give the press some exclusivity to talk about it first, so I couldn't advertise the exact launch date.

More soon, but if anyone has questions about the project or the Kickstarter itself, feel free to ask me!

Lacrimosa

Thu Oct 31 19:00:24 2019

Was going largely for a German Expressionist sort of look here (kind of an assortment of artistic movements from the early 20th century that peaked around the 1920s).

Anyway, whoops - this was morbid. But fun to draw.
Happy Halloween, everyone!!

Lackadaisy Anodyne (full)

Wed Jul 3 05:06:12 2019

Okay, here's that comic update (many of you had a preview of the top portion). Pardon the excessive size. I felt it best from a storytelling standpoint to treat this as one piece. I do apologize if it that poses a technical problem, though, if you're trying to view this on a mobile device.

It's here on the web site too, though, and I will shortly put up a mobile-friendly version at Webtoon.

-------------------------------

A note about the photo slipping through the floor:
In homes built in earlier periods, floorboards and joists would be the only thing dividing your living space and cellar, whereas modern houses are typically built with subfloors. Usually, even in older homes, the floorboards would be jointed together edgewise (shiplapping or tongue and groove) to minimize the formation of gaps. Some earlier styles of flooring simply involved floating boards flush against each other and nailing them down, though. After some wear and tear and foundation settling, one can end up with some unwanted openings into the underworld.

Lackadaisy Sendoff

Thu Apr 11 03:18:41 2019

Posting this exclusively for Patrons for the moment, just to say thanks for your patience.

This took longer than my projection because I added the next update to it as well. This way, it's much longer than it would have been had I posted it last week, and it wraps up this segment. When it came down to it, I couldn't really justify spreading this bit out across multiple updates. On to another chapter and different characters next time.

-------------------------

A note about the content:
The temperance movement had some very prominent religious underpinnings, (perhaps most notably the WCTU), but National Prohibition remained a sore topic among a diversity of religious groups, including Catholics, Jews and German Lutherans, who tended more toward the 'wet' side of the debate. It had little to do with the alcohol, though. In part, it was because these groups were enduring some amount of hostile sentiment in America at the time and had reasons to fear escalating establishment-borne scrutiny and persecution predicated on broad policing of the 18th Amendment.
Lutherans seemed particularly incensed by the muddling of gospel with prohibition rhetoric and steadfastly resisted marching to the beat with Baptists, Methodists, and other largely 'dry' Protestant groups. They didn't encourage unlawful rebellion, of course, but a number of ecclesiastics penned anti-prohibition diatribes more colorful and fiery than I could manage to represent here.

Latest update! Of course, you guys saw part of this earlier this month.

In case you have trouble viewing this here, it's on the web site too.

--------------------------
Did kind of a ridiculous amount of ad/packaging research for this one. Extra points, I guess, if you recognize any of them (though some actually haven't changed much over the decades and are probably fairly easy to spot).
In the 1920s, most packaged, single serving candies cost 5¢. Among them, Baby Ruth bars were king. It was exceedingly likely the Curtiss Candy Company picked the name to cash in on the popularity of Babe Ruth. However, in the 1930s, when an officially endorsed Babe Ruth candy appeared on the scene, Curtiss contended that the names were too confusingly similar, and claimed their bars were named after the daughter of former president Grover Cleveland. As that "Baby Ruth" was an infant in the 1890s, and had passed away in 1904 as a fairly obscure historical figure, long before the candy bar debuted, it was a pretty feeble cover story. Nevertheless, the company successfully avoided paying any royalties to the Sultan of Swat and legally stamped out his ability to market his own competing candy bar.

Happy New Year!

Tue Jan 1 01:18:18 2019

Have a bright, sparkly, frilly, flowery year to come, everyone.

The upcoming comic update is a bit of an extra large one. It's kind of an odd little transition chapter unto itself. I need more time to complete it, but I'll be posting the first sizable part of it exclusively for Patrons next week.

In case you have trouble viewing this, you can find it here as well.

Just returned from Japan - did a lot of this page while there! I think it has some artifact problems from the combination of compression and texture. Apologies if it's extra gritty looking. I'll see if I can fix that.

Halloween Art Contest!

Sat Oct 13 21:44:23 2018

If you follow me on other social media, you've probably seen this already. I completely spaced out on posting it here, though, and so I apologize for delivering the announcement late, in case anyone was wanting to participate.

If you'd like to submit an entry, you can do that at the Lackadaisy Discord. Just message Non Newtonian (@Non Newtonian) and include a link or attach a file to your message.
Of course, if you have questions, feel free to ask me here or on the chat server!

(I realize this isn't everyone's thing - a little further down the road, I will hold some sort of giveaway of Lackadaisy card games exclusively for Patrons that won't require art skills.)

Welp...

Thu Aug 2 22:32:16 2018

Hey, I'm really sorry if any of you have run into a problem with Patreon declining your card for no discernible reason this cycle. Something went awry. Creators all had synchronized heart attacks this morning as we watched our patronage plummet without explanation. It seems Patreon is trying to address it, but I want to apologize if it has proven to be any inconvenience.

From what I can tell, they are reaching out to everyone whose cards were declined to explain. The system should automatically make another attempt at the charge after it fails the first time. They may also suggest updating/changing your payment method, though. That more or less puts the onus for their technical errors on the users here, and that's not cool at all. You shouldn't have to change your legitimate card information to fix what's wrong with Patreon. I do understand if you've reached your frustration threshold with this platform and you wish to leave.

Again, I'm very sorry.

Lackadaisy Switchback

Sat Jun 16 15:40:27 2018

Hey guys,

The full size art may be more easily viewable here.

I'm sorry this was so late in arriving. June so far has been marked by a malfunctioning computer, a malfunctioning car and a malfunctioning cat. I've got a lot of catching up to do now, and I've got to figure out what to do about replacing some of my work equipment, but I'll post the livestream schedule shortly!

-------------------
Some notes:

In the late 1920's, car manufacturers began including windshield wipers with most new models. Prior to that, wipers were more commonly sold as separate accessories. Electrically operated wipers were available, but most were operated manually with a lever from inside the car.

Granted, consumer cars in the 1920s didn't move as fast as modern day cars do, but one must appreciate the considerable skill it would have taken to drive a manual transmission vehicle in the rain with no power steering or anti-lock brakes, while operating the windshield wipers with a lever and defogging the interior with a jacket sleeve.

Card Game Availability

Tue Jan 30 06:02:38 2018

Hey guys,

I promised I'd let Patrons know first when card games became available again. I haven't announced it publicly yet, but there are currently a very limited supply in the store:

Lackadaisy Card Game (by itself) <--**Sold Out!** (sorry guys - that happened fast enough to catch the site admin and me off guard)

Lackadaisy Card Game Bundle <--A Few In Stock

I expect to have many more in stock later this year, but this is the last of them - the original "Bootleg Edition" - until the First Edition rolls out some months from now.

Live Chat

Fri Jan 26 22:12:00 2018

Hey guys,

There's a chat session coming up this Sunday, January 28th, at 5pm CST (6pm EST) in the #lackachat channel on the Discord server. Everyone here is quite welcome to join. Friendly prattle, banter, and discourse are all encouraged, as are inquiries (which I'll do my best to answer).

If you can't make it but would like to ask me something, you can stop by the Discord and leave your question in #lackachat_help. Answers get compiled in #lackachat after the session.

--------------------------------------------

What are you even talking about, Tracy?

If you're new here and you have no idea what the Discord is, well, it's Lackadaisy's very own chat server and online mini-community! It can be accessed by web browser or through the free app (PC or mobile). You can find the Lackadaisy Discord at the link below:

discord.gg/Lackadaisy

Furthermore, Patreon and Discord have done some integration that allows you to link up your accounts. Patrons have their own special user tier on the Lackadaisy Discord.
Linking your accounts is simple to do - instructions here.

Hope to see you there!

Facing Around

Mon Jan 15 04:23:12 2018

Some practice sketches I've been doing in-between working on comic panels - trying to capture faces without overworking things as I tend to do. I've had some requests for a human face-drawing guide akin to Notes on Expressions, but I feel my face drawing skills need a lot of brushing up before I can muster enough presumptuousness to do something like that. I'll probably start another of these focused more on expression soon.

Many of these are faces from early cinema. Some of the others are from movie stills, and some are from...I don't know where. Over the years, I've saved several gigs worth of reference images to my hard drive into poorly organized folders like 'interesting faces', 'cinematic', 'blue stuff', and 'vampy'. Extra points if you can recognize any of them, I guess.

Merry Scruffmas

Mon Dec 25 11:17:20 2017

A deep thank you to all of you who stuck it out after Patreon's announcement about fees (and, happily, their subsequent rescinding of said fees). Some of you have returned, and some even upped your pledges in the face of the fee fiasco...and I can't tell you how much it means.

Instead, here's a comic. It's an especially stupid one, but I hope you enjoy it anyway. =)
I also hope that you're all having a lovely, warm and comfy holiday season, whether you're celebrating something or not.
Here's hoping for smoother sailing in 2018.

Winter

Tue Dec 12 03:36:11 2017

I know it's been a rough one for a lot of you. I hope everyone's hanging in there. Spring will come around.

freckle_winter.jpg

I'm Sorry

Fri Dec 8 22:52:58 2017

Hi Patrons,

I just want to express to you how sorry I am about Patreon's decision to change the fee structure. As a creator using this platform, I fully expect to be the one to carry the processing and usage fees and I fully expect that, when a supporter pledges $1 or $2 or whatever amount, that is the amount they will be charged.

They didn't give us creators but a day's warning before they unleashed this. Right before Christmas for the added nip of brutality, I suppose. The announcement was dressed up in "It helps creators. Don't you want to help creators?"' clothing, but I don't know a single creator here who wants this, who finds it helpful, or who thinks it's fair to patrons. Creators clamored in a half-panic all day Wednesday on social media for a reconsideration but all we got was radio silence.

Then came the public announcement and the inevitable exodus...

For some of you, it's just a difference of a handful of cents and perhaps not a big deal. For others -if you're supporting a lot of artists at lower tiers- it's more of a hit. The issue, of course, is that numerous low level pledges make up the backbone of many a support network here!

Many patrons have already taken their departure, and that's understandable. If you're on your way out, please know I'm very thankful for your past support and your readership. To those who intend to stay, thank you from the bottom of my heart! You make it possible for me to keep doing this comic, and I'll do my best to make it as worthwhile as possible.

Meanwhile I'll be looking for alternative means of doing this that don't punish supporters with tacked on fees. Drip (Kickstarter's upcoming long term funding platform) looks like it has some potential.

If you have thoughts about how I can make it easier for you to be a patron, please say so. For instance, I'm thinking I'll knock the $2 pledge tier down to $1.50 so that when the fees are added, it remains roughly a $2 charge for access to the patron-exclusive things I post here.

--------------------------------------------

Here's where Patreon attempts to explain the changes, if you haven't read it already. (It's clear they had issues that need to be addressed, though I still think they made the wrong decision about how to do it):

Card Game - MFF

Mon Dec 4 21:15:43 2017

Just some photos of the card game and booth from MFF this past weekend. Mostly posting in case anyone's interested in what the game came out looking like. They arrived just in time.
We sold out of everything we had at the con, but one box of 20 games didn't quite make it to Chicago, so those will go up for sale in the online store before Christmas.
More will be available after the new year as well, at which point I'll arrange for some kind of mini-giveaway for Patrons.

Also, some bonus gift art from the convention - Zib by CryptoGlitter, and Viktor by an artist whose name I'm still trying to track down so I can properly credit her!

There's a slightly larger version here, in case this is difficult to read.

This was supposed to be a two-parter, but I've run out of time to work on the second part. I've got to make my way to Chicago for MFF, but I'll be back with more soon.

If by chance, any of you are planning to be at MFF as well, I'll be at tables A 22-25 in the Dealer's Den. I may even have some card games there with me. (The printing hit a delay and so they're shipping right to the convention hotel to make it in time. A real nail-biter).

Thu Nov 23 23:55:36 2017

Just some messy sketches for things in progress.

I'm really only posting this so I can say Happy Thanksgiving to anyone who's celebrating today!
...And to extend my gratitude to readers and Patrons for making Lackadaisy possible and for making it feel so worthwhile. When I was a kid, the people closest to me told me I could never make a living as an artist - that pursuing it as a career was foolish and unrealistic.
Well, foolish it may be, but I'm so glad they were wrong about the other parts. That's because of you guys. Thank you. <3

Lackadaisy - Card Game

Sun Oct 29 06:01:19 2017

Well, this took up a lot of very late nights over the past while . There's a lot of comic art here that needed recoloring and rejiggering to serve this purpose. There's a lot of new art too. Anyway, barring some fixes to the title text on the cards, this is all going to print soon! Not all of the cards are included here, but I figured I'd provide a preview for you guys.
If you're interested, I'll arrange a giveaway of the game set for Patrons once I have some in hand.

There's a larger, probably more legible version of this image here.

Halloween Art Contest

Sat Sep 30 22:06:22 2017

Trying something new this year, in case anyone here is interested!

The theme is pretty loose. As long as the art is related to Lackadaisy and Halloween in some way, almost anything goes. Judging will be based on execution, creativity, and how much wicked glee you took in concocting your entry!

Submissions don't necessarily need to include Lackadaisy characters - for example, a spooky art deco club motif would qualify too. Characters can appear in any form, be it cat, dog, human, or potato. OCs can be included in submissions that also include Lackadaisy characters in some way (be it art or writing). Things like costumes and carved pumpkins are eligible too.

If you win and you happen to be a Patron, I'll include something a little extra with your prize!

The Lackadaisy Discord is here.

Here are the instructions for linking up your Patreon and Discord accounts.

Stupid Dream Diary

Thu Sep 7 06:34:30 2017

This should have been up a few days ago. I've been down with a stubborn chest cold since I returned home from traveling. My apologies.

Anyway, I have a lot of stupid dreams. Sometimes I jot them down upon awakening. It's sort of an amusing exercise to see if they translate to comic form. Hopefully they're worth a smirk or two.

Next comic update will return to regular Lackadaisy programming.

Fluff

Thu Aug 31 21:02:26 2017

Viktor's getting his yeti on, I guess. He's not really a Siberian cat (or any specific breed), but I figured it'd be fun to draw him with the characteristic ruff...and then things got stupider from there. As they do. He'd need that turtleneck sweater to keep it all under control.

Anyway, this is not this month's intended content post, of course. I'm posting it mostly to say that I just got back from a long trip during which I worked on a small collection of little comic-like things. I just need a day or two at the computer with them to clean them and make them presentable now that I'm back home. I'll share them shortly.

Live Chat Schedule:
Also, I'll be doing a Patron-only Q&A chat this coming Wednesday, September 6th at 8pm EST/9pm CST in the Discord Server's #lackachat channel. Feel free to come by! Even if you don't have questions, shooting the breeze a bit is welcomed too.

(Simple instructions for linking up your Patreon and Discord accounts are here.)

On the Road

Missouri Mines Photo Album

Sun Aug 13 08:45:05 2017

For my birthday this year, I took a little day trip out to the Ozarks with a friend. We stopped at the Missouri Mines site - a defunct galena (lead ore) mining facility handed over to the state parks system upon its closing - to explore and take some photos of this brick and metal wasteland. I learned a lot while there and put together this little album in case anyone else (besides Wick) is interested.

Anyway, this was an exploration of the topside of a large Missouri mining operation. Next, I hope to visit some of the mines themselves. They're more like massive caverns in the limestone underground than like the narrow mine shafts one would tend to think of first, and apparently they're an impressive sight to behold. I'll be sure to take more photos!

Spotify Playlists

Wed Aug 9 06:06:33 2017

I've had some requests for 1920s music and for my livestream playlist as of late...and I've been promising to share. I hesitated to hand out the livestream list as it is, though, because it's a mad hodgepodge of unrelated things, many of which are sourced from my hard drive and not the Spotify network. Neither did I have a well organized playlist exclusively for old-timey tunes. So, I did some rearranging and collecting to create these two playlists:

Lackadaisy Listening - The Old Stuff
Early 20th century (pre-WW2) jazz, pop and folk music. Some of the recordings themselves date back that far. Many of the entries are more recent recordings of songs either composed or initially made popular in the ragtime and jazz eras, though. For instance, if you hear Bobby Darin's well known 1959 recording of Mack the Knife, it's because the song is from the 1928 Threepenny Opera (I included the theatrical 'Die Moritat von Mackie Messer' version too).

Lackadaisy Listening 2 - The New Stuff
Modern revival of early 20th century music styles. A lot of upbeat electro-swing here, but I think I've included enough of a variety of other things to keep it from sounding too much like an insufferably peppy, nine-hour space cantina hangover.

-----------------------------------------------------
Anyway, just sharing these for any interested parties!
A few songs appear on both lists because they sort of fall into both categories. I'll keep updating the lists as I remember things I forgot to include. And if you have suggestions, do let me know!

Wallpapers #17, 18, 19

Sat Aug 5 12:39:32 2017

Headlong, Picklock and Skirmish - new desktop and device backgrounds! I had some requests for the top two images to be expanded for wallpaper use, and decided to throw in the Skirmish art as well.

In the attached ZIP files, you'll find images at the most common display sizes/aspect ratios. Also included with each is a large "full size" image that can be cropped and sized to your liking.

If there are any images or comic panels you'd like to have as a wallpaper, feel free to say so and I'll add it to the list!

Open Q&A Chat Saturday

Sat Aug 5 01:07:21 2017

Hi all,

There'll be an open Q&A session tomorrow, August 5th, starting at 6pm CT / 7pm ET. As always, feel free to come by, ask questions, shoot the breeze a bit, and engage in some senseless prattle!

(This one's open to everyone on the server to celebrate 1000+ members. Next one will be Patrons-only like usual).

Here's the invite link to the Lackadaisy Discord server, in case you need it.

Lackadaisy Civility

Tue Aug 1 07:59:15 2017

Chapter ending. The full resolution image can be viewed here, in case this is difficult to read.

Welp, onto something different with some familiar faces in the next canon update. I'm looking forward to it, and to the change of scenery. It's perhaps obvious that I'm trying to do something a bit more with color here in Volume 3, but I'm not hitting the right notes yet. I feel this color scheme has been too unwieldy, over-saturated and harsh-looking at turns. It's been a learning experience, though. I'll try to do something more appealing and a little subtler in the next chapter.

Book Giveaway!

Sat Jul 29 23:23:04 2017

Hi guys,

The Discord Server has just hit and surpassed 1000 members!

In celebration, my fellow admin, Non Newtonian, has engineered a book giveaway raffle. To enter, join the server (if you haven't already) and react with a specific emoji to the Giveaway announcement.
After this weekend, 5 entries will be selected at random by a fancy bot to receive a free, signed Volume 1 book. (If you're a Patron and you win, I'll sketch in the book for you too!)

I will arrange another Giveaway exclusively for Patrons in the near future, but there's nothing to stop you from joining in this one too if you want to better your chances!

Hi guys,

I'll be hanging around the Lackadaisy Discord server in the #lackachat channel for Q&A and generalized yakking this Saturday the 22nd, starting at 4pm CT/5pm ET. If you're up for a chat, come on by!

Ghost Town Photos

Tue Jul 18 13:14:14 2017

This is a small album from a recent excursion I took to a Missouri ghost town called Moselle. The train depot (no longer standing) closed down decades ago and the whole place drifted out of time.

It's probably of minimal interest here, but it's the sort of thing that inspires many aspects of Lackadaisy. I'm a little obsessed with abandoned places. I guess I'm just sharing this in case anyone else here appreciates the lovely, lonely pathos of decay.

(Some of the photos have old-timey effects applied. I was derping around with Filter Forge and trying to learn my way around Lightroom.)

Mordecai - Skirmish Card Art

Mon Jul 17 22:40:38 2017

...for Dreamkeepers' Skirmish Game, where Mordecai will be a guest character.

This was vexing me. I got caught up in trying to fix it and ended up finishing late last night. Oh well - more time for requests in the livestream.

Convention/Reward Sketches

Tue Jul 11 03:44:06 2017

Hmm. Some sort of AU in which the cosmos have beset Mordecai with a long-haired Chihuahua...

These are a mix of reward drawings and Anthrocon sketches (some of which I ended up drawing at home and doing some digital processing on because I ran out of time at the convention). Unfortunately, I managed to forget to photograph a number of others I drew while at the con. If I drew something for you and you don't see it here, sorry. I'm a scatterbrained fool. =P

Upcoming Live Chat

Fri Jul 7 03:33:39 2017

Hi all!

I'll be hosting a Patron chat session for Q&A and general nonsense at 8pm CDT this Saturday, July 8th on the Lackadaisy Discord.
The channel to be in is #lackachat.

The plan is to go for about an hour, but if the conversation is lively enough, we can just talk and talk and talk until we get sick of each other!

If you're on the Discord server, but don't see the #lackachat channel, it means you haven't got your Patreon account linked up with Discord yet. Here are the instructions for doing that.

Lackadaisy Roulette / Freebooter

Thu Jun 29 14:28:16 2017

Argh. One small bit left to this chapter. So close to done, but I have to go hop on a plane. I need to do some color correcting on this too, but I'm out of time and running on little sleep at this moment.
Anyway, this will be broken into two pages when the comic updates on the website. Patrons are getting the first look, though. Thank you all for bearing with me!

You can see the full size image here (Patreon limits the image width).

Stream Sketches

Mon Jun 19 23:49:49 2017

Some of the nonsense from the last livestream. I promised I'd share it here.

Prompts were for Rocky in David Byrne's big suit, fast food Rocky, and "Zibby Stardust" (or was it Zibby Stardrugs?).

Had a lot of fun last stream. Thanks for joining me (and for bringing your senses of humor along with you)!

---------------------------------

I've been considering hosting a weekly chat on the Discord server. The purpose would be both Q&A and simply being more social with everyone here. Is that something you guys would be interested in?

Society6 Shop

Mon Jun 12 23:32:31 2017

Lackadaisy Society6 Shop - prints and doodads on demand

4DE Lackadaisy Shop - still the place to buy books, club pins, t-shirts, giclee canvas prints and big posters

------------------------------------------

Hi guys,

I sometimes get requests to make prints or merchandise out of things like small pieces of art I post here and individual comic panels. The turnaround time and effort it takes 4DE to produce and stock new items, however, is often difficult to justify when only a small handful of people might be interested. For that reason, I've cleared it with 4DE to open up this little Society6 shop. This is for things that are better suited to print-on-demand.

In the future, if there's a bit of artwork you'd like to have as a print, a stationary card, notebook cover, mug or some such, shoot me a message and I can more immediately make it available!

Kat Karson

Tue Jun 6 04:20:07 2017

Some non-Lackadaisy art I did this past year for Utah's TICA club (Kat is their Maine Coon mascot). As it's cat-related, I thought some of you might like to see it.

The club invited me to join them at their premiere cat show recently. It's not a venue type I had any previous experience with, but it was a treat to be there, surrounded by a group of very welcoming people and their beloved felines, purebreds and moggies alike. The show worked to incorporate the local 4H group and to promote no-kill and rescue adoption as well. My hat's off to them for that, and thanks for having me!

I'll have some more Lackadaisy stuff for you tomorrow night!

Lackadaisy Pugnastics (partial update)

Thu Jun 1 01:18:48 2017

For those who are waiting for the full remainder of the chapter, you may want to skip this. For those reading, the rather arbitrary ending to the page is why I generally prefer posting multiple pages at once.

However, I have to travel out of town briefly (apologies - it can't be helped) and didn't want to go without posting something first, so consider this a Patron-only preview of the full update. I'll be back with more soon.

The full sized page can be viewed here (Patreon limits the image size).

----------------------------------

"Ga de don" is a phonetic spelling of a common saying meaning, "lookit that!"
From what I can glean, it's probably the remains of a fairly archaic French expression - "Regarde donc!" (sort of "Look thus!") - after having been given the Cajun treatment.
Cajun French. There's not much about it that's standardized, not even spellings in many cases. It's like trying to do a forensic dissection of an over-boiled, spicy, mysterious word gumbo.

Lackadaisy Discord and News

Sun Apr 30 18:29:00 2017

So, Patreon is wonderful in myriad different ways, but as you may have noticed, the comment system is not really designed around facilitating in-depth discussion and social interaction among Patrons. Hence...

The Lackadaisy Discord Server

This is a place for Patrons to talk about Lackadaisy things and all of the other types of things (of which there are many). Chat until you bleed! Chat until you cry! Bleed and cry and chat! Have a very pleasant conversation!!

-- Here is an invite to the server.
You needn’t install anything if you don’t want to. This works by app or browser.

-- If you’ve already got your Discord account linked to your Patreon account, you should automatically have access to Lackacord. There is an exclusive #lackadaisy_patrons channel for you. If you’re a $5+ patron, you also have access to the #livestream_chat.

-- To link up your Patreon and Discord accounts, just follow these instructions .

Needless to say, you are all very welcome to join. I hope this adds a little extra spark to the sense of community here, and I look forward to having some good (if not bizarre) chats with you all.

Many thanks to Zachary (Non Newtonian) for all of the setup work, and to CiaPlush for the additional help!

Other Items on the Agenda

Stuff for May-

I’ve got a not-quite-a-mini-comic-but-sort-of to share a little later this week.

The real comic update will come toward the end of the month, but it will be an extra large one to wrap up the present chapter. Longer updates seem to be the preferred mode around here, but if you guys have objections to the timeline, I can post a partial update mid-month instead. Otherwise, I will plan to post some comic pencil roughs along the way.

Fur Painting - Process Video with Notes

Tue Apr 25 14:35:06 2017

About my execution here, I have regrets. An annotated process video seemed like a good idea the outset, but I think it fails to communicate as thoroughly as it ought to. Along with simply being difficult to read amidst the fidgets of high-speed Photoshop UI action, short captions can't really convey enough about what's going on. I realize now that a narrated instructional video in real time probably would have been a better approach.

I beg pardon. Video tutorials (as opposed to static image tutorials) is new territory for me.
Anyway, sharing this because I've been promising it..and because maybe it has some redeeming value in there somewhere. I'll strive do better next time. If it leaves anyone with process questions, feel free to ask and I'll try to clarify.

Patron Question: Nico Construction

Thu Apr 20 19:01:09 2017

Sam S. asked:
"...could we ever see a constructional process with Nico? I've been trying to draw more of him but he always comes out kinda wonky. I think it's a combination of making his head too round and not getting the angle/position of his cheek floof right. "

He's tricky to draw - wonky is a good word for it. It usually takes time and repetitive drawing to get the hang of any character, but to be fair, it took longer than usual with Nico to get what's in my head and what manifests on paper into relative alignment. All of my older drawings of him look terribly awkward to me. Because he has a long face, it's easy to accidentally over-define his cheekbones, jaw, nose and chin such that he starts taking on an unappealingly human quality...or looking like a misplaced dancer from Cats. Inversely, too little definition can leave it looking like his features are floating without anchor points in the structure of his face.
Anyway, this represents my thought process about shape as I'm drawing him. I hope it's helpful!

Stream Sketches

Sat Apr 15 20:04:56 2017

Some long lost drawings from livestreams...plus some other stuff.

Some of the prompts were: Mordecai-Beerus, 90s Sy, guitar slinging Zib, Mordecai shows up for work sick, Mitzi and Rocky's terrifying hypothetical love child, and young Nico and his 'pets'.

Highly Professional

Fri Mar 31 01:41:23 2017

Some messy pencils of Nico taking his work very seriously.

Hey guys...
So, for the sake of better storytelling, I decided to do some last minute rejiggering on the incoming comic update. As a result, there are two update options right now. The first option is a shorter update tomorrow, followed by another short update in early April. Second option is to wait until the start of next week for the full, longer update.
Do you have a preference?

--------------
UPDATE: Thanks for your feedback everyone! I think that was the most unanimous response I've ever had. I'll post the full size update after the weekend!

Technolology

Sun Mar 19 12:40:27 2017

A quicky I just cleaned up. It came from a Patron livestream. Thank you for the prompt! It was something along the lines of 'What happens when Lackadaisy discovers the internet?' ("Inanity followed by tears" is the holding pattern.)

My alternate idea was to make a comic about Rocky launching a high fashion cactus-wear etsy store....but it appears there are already numerous etsy stores dedicated to keeping your cacti en vogue. -_-

Fri Mar 10 14:30:23 2017

In profile, my Siamese-mix cat looks like a distinguished gentleman. From the front, the effect is more like, "BUH?"

Anyway, I'm putting together a digital painting process video with notes for this - trying to at least. I have to focus all of my attentions on comic stuff for now. I'll get back to this, but I figured I could at least share the static image in the meantime.

Love - Lackadaisy Style

Reward Arts

Sat Feb 11 02:51:47 2017

A small selection from the past while: an homage to Buster Keaton's "The Boat", Rocky looking much too eager to start the day, Abelard à la spider dog, and a little commission of Lackadaisy-style Danny and Sawyer.

Valentine's stuff coming soon! Tinkering with a fur painting tutorial too, but I may need to put it off a little longer so that I can focus more attention on the next Volume 3 update.

Card Game - Character Cards

Fri Feb 3 01:41:38 2017

I made these for the card game in development by ThinkTank, who also produced the Nordguard game. (These are a separate thing from the playing card deck.)
Each playable character will have different abilities, but I left the game mechanic text off the cards simply because I'm not sure they'd want me sharing that yet.

Anyway, mostly just repurposed artwork, but thought it might be of mild interest.

There's a slightly larger version here at the web site, in case it's difficult to read.

(There's a grammatical error in there, but I can't fix it wihtout deleting the original post because something is borked with the edit tools. Sorry for the double post, if you got an email notification twice.
Anyway, first one to spot the error..uh..wins?)

Photoshop Brushes

Wed Jan 25 07:43:34 2017

In the last livestream, some of you expressed interest in the brush set I was using. It's kind of a beast, made up of self-made brushes and things I gathered up from former colleauges and internet resources over the years.
I organized it here as best I could so you can download the attached ZIP and try it out if you like!

If you plan to make use of it, I recommend using the Preset Manager to delete whatever segments you aren't interested in, save out portions of it to different brush sets, and to generally organize it to your liking.

(The set is a Photoshop CC saved ABR, but I believe it should also work in Photoshop CS5 and CS6.)

Hope you enjoy!

The intended update was longer than this, but I've got to rush off to a convention that I committed to many months ago, and I'd have no peace of mind the entire time if I didn't get some comic content posted first. The next page will go up around the end of the month instead.

Thanks for reading, guys! With every caffeine infused fiber of my being, I hope Volume 3 will prove worthy.

Surprise: it's cats

Fri Jan 6 05:27:19 2017

I was finally getting around to organizing the livestream art I've accumulated over the past while and realized I never posted these. Ivy and Viktor aren't new, but part of the collection, I guess - that being the not-entirely-stylistically-consistent collection of cat-cats.

Anyway, thought I'd share!

Happy New Year!

Sat Dec 31 21:15:12 2016

A quick one of Ivy.

I hope the coming year is a fountain of good things for all of you (and failing that, I hope it is at least not a total horror show the likes of 2016).

Thank you, everyone, for your amazing support! Because of you, I surived a pretty unpleasant house flooding situation, finally finished Volume 2, edited it into book shape and got it into print. I was able to work at home at Calvin's side as he was sick and dying. I was able to do a GOH spot at Anthrocon. I was able to take in, socialize and rehome a pile of feral kittens. I was able to make Lackadaisy available in mobile format. And, of course, I was able to begin Volume 3. I'm now looking forward to all of the story I'll be able to share with you in 2017.

Speaking of which, most of you voted to wait for a multi-page update, so that is the direction I'm taking it. The full, real update will be along shortly. Here's an unofficial update, though, for those of you who voted to see singular pages at a time.

You can view the first page of Volume 3 here .

Holiday Reruns

Fri Dec 23 14:57:12 2016

Hey guys,

I'm up to my eyeballs in comic art right now. Though most years I like to squeeze in some extra holiday art, I figure the better thing to do this year will be to get Volume 3 rolling sooner rather than later. So, in the interest of not delaying things any further, here's some recently reformatted comics of yore.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Open Livestream
I'll also be doing a special livestream open to all patrons on Tuesday, December 27th, starting at 2:00pm CST at this channel .

I'll work on a little bit of comic art, answer questions and take some sketch requests from the chat.

I'm holed up at home this year, living under a pile of blankets and doing nothing but comics through the holidays, so if you're in a charitable mood, come save me from myself! Or, you know, just come along if you feel like it. Hope to see you there! =)

Book Sketches

Thu Dec 8 17:17:18 2016

Custom shikishi board sketches I just marathoned through for my publisher's holiday book specials. Had to get them done fast so they'd reach their destinations in time for Christmas.

I don't know if any of you here ordered one, but I figured I'd share them with you anyway!

There's a larger version of this image available here .

Comic WIPs

Fri Dec 2 13:55:08 2016

Some art from upcoming Volume 3 pages in varying stages of incompleteness.

I can post each page as I finish them, or I can post the first 'chapter' in two sets of three pages. I figure I'll leave it to you guys to tell me which you would prefer. The individual pages aren't especially strong as standalones, but I'll be able to start sharing material sooner and you'll get the first look at them before I post them publicly. The 3-page sets will take longer to complete, but probably make for more satisfying updates.

If you have an opinion, feel free to share. I am taking count!

----------------------------

EDIT: Thanks for your feedback, everyone! It looks like page sets are the prefered method of comic delivery, so that is what I will do.

Anermation

Sun Nov 27 13:15:44 2016

...in the crudest sense, anyway.

This is some recent reward art for a very excellent Patron. I'm a little late for Thanksgiving, but in case I haven't said it lately, I am relentlessly, immoderately, violently grateful for all of your support here, guys. (Well, maybe not violently...but definitely vehemently.)

Anyway, the request was for a teenaged Mitzi...which gets you Mary Ellen and a banjo. I hadn't done any animation in Photoshop since back when it offered only the most rudimentary of GIF animation tools. I was pleased to discover that the newer tools are rather more sophisticated and capable of doing some pretty neat things. If only there were more hours in the day.

Okay...back to comic pages.

------------------------------

EDIT: This seems to crash the Patreon mobile app. I probably need to shrink it down for easier viewing. Sorry about that. In the meantime, here's an external link to the animation and a non-animated version .

Some development work from Volume 3. If you're worried about spoilers, you might want to skip looking this one over. I've left the dialogue notes out so that it doesn't give much away, and I usually make further revisions as I work on individual pages...but this may be entirely inscrutable anyway.

In any case, I thought I'd just share some of this process stuff. These are pages I'm currently working on. I'll post some more refined previews/process stuff soon, followed by actual pages.

Holiday Dealies

Tue Nov 15 01:16:30 2016

Hey guys!

The holidays are slinking ever closer. Stalking. Looming. ...Mirthfully.

In anticipation of the encroaching jolliness, Lackadaisy books and other merch have been gathered up into various bundle deals that are now available.

Because one of the packages contains a very limited number of custom character bust drawings on shikishi art boards, I figured I'd announce this here to give any interested Patrons the first opportunity to order. (I'll be posting about this on various social media a little later).

Oh...and the new t-shirt design ("Play It Again, Zib") is available too!

Unfinished Business

Things I didn't have time to complete in recent weeks. Most of it is for a mini-comic I hope to get back to eventually. I'm not sure when that will be, though. The Ivy drawing was something I had wanted to paint in time for Halloween, of course, but I guess I'll save it for next year.

Wallpaper #16 - Mordecai and Viktor

Thu Oct 13 01:07:39 2016

I had some requests a while back to make wallpapers of these available, so here they are! You should see a downloadable attachment with this post, but in case you don't, here's a link.

Common aspect ratios for desktops and devices are included as well as a full size image that you can feel free to crop or size to your liking.

(Many of the phone backgrounds are horizontally oriented because of the shape of the art - it doesn't lend itself particularly well to vertical cropping.)

Livestream Reschedule

Mon Oct 10 18:48:49 2016

Hi guys,

Very regrettably, I have to cancel today's livestream I have a sick kitten who was at the emergency vet yesterday. He needs to go back today to his regular vet for x-rays. Because it might be an obstruction of some kind, I can't put it off. I'm so sorry.

In lieu, here's some (sappy) recent reward art. The separate prompts were for Wick and Viktor enjoying themselves/having a happy moment.

I will announce the new livestream date and time shortly in a separate post.

Meanwhile, at the Kitten Farm...

Sat Oct 1 03:52:50 2016

This doesn't really belong here, probably, but a couple of you have asked for kitten updates, so I figured I'd share the latest video I put together for the people who are adopting. (Pardon my baby talk. It seems only natural to speak to a tiny squeaking squeaker in their own squeaky patois.)

I've got two separate flights scheduled into October to deliver 4 of the 6 kittens to new homes. I have a good prospect for a 5th kitten as well. Number 6 may end up staying here. We shall see.

Anyway, this set me back a lot in September with regard to where I should be with Volume 3, and I apologize for that. Please at least know I've been doing everything I can do get things back on track as expediently as possible, with the kittens' best interests at heart...and Lackadaisy's too. I won't miss the daily scrub-down the entire upstairs portion of my house needs every day...or the food, litter and vet bills x6...the ritual scarification of any exposed skin during chaotic play sessions...or the general loss of productivity it all amounts to, but I will miss the little buggers.

Special thanks to Patrick for helping me film parts of this.

Some art, finally...although I would like to do something less nonsensical with the lighting here eventually. (Is it too dark or contrasty? I've stared at it for too long.)

This is actually for a yet-to-be-announced Lackadaisy card game currently in the works. To be clear, this is a separate thing from the card deck. Most of the main cast will be playable with specific abilities, and the object will, of course, be running liquor across a randomized environment (based very much on places in the comic) while trying not to die! I can't say much more about it just now, but hopefully it sounds like it could be fun!

Hey guys,

I'm sorry updates have been sparse this month. This litter of kittens is killing me. I've got 4 adopters lined up for October, though, so I'm hoping life will resume something close to normalcy soon.

I am still working on the the things I said I'd be working on, but progress has been slower than I'd like. To try to make up for this, I'm going to hold an all-Patron livestream this Sunday afternoon-evening. This will be a request sketch session, so if you'd like to come and you have some ideas, bring them along!

The stream will begin Sunday the 18th at 3:00pm CST at my Twitch Channel.

Hope to see you there!

Basketful of Chaos

Thu Sep 1 20:12:06 2016

*******Harrowed Screaming********

Ahem, now that I have that part out of the way, this is what's happening now - kittens under a neighbor's porch, courtesy of this gray feral cat I've long been trying to nab for TNR. If you attend my livestreams, you might have heard me talking about her.

My neighbors discovered them and we set about catching the kittens in a humane trap, one by one with the aid of some tuna late Tuesday night. They've since been camping out in a second bathroom that I don't make much use of (please disregard the hideous purple decor. I've been meaning to renovate).

I took them to the vet yesterday (with some very patient help from my friend Patrick), and it seems they're all in pretty good shape, roughly 5-6 weeks old, Feline Leukemia Virus negative, and completely indistinguishable from one another just to make things extra difficult.

In the dark early hours of this morning, their mother came to serenade them at the window and they responded in a interminably, heartbreaking, peeping chorus. On a lark, I set the trap out on my porch - a trap she had long evaded, mind you - with a hand towel in it that I had rubbed on some of the kittens. She took the bait and now I have her too. The bottom picture doesn't quite do their happy reunion purr-pile justice.

This will be the short term situation, though. I will have to have her spayed so that she can't make any more xerox copies, and then released. She's unlikely to ever trust people enough to be a happy housecat, but I will continue to feed her and provide her outdoor shelter.

The kittens needn't be feral, though, and for a whole host of reasons, it would be best if they weren't. I can't turn them over to a municipal shelter because they won't invest any effort in them - they'll simply kill them. I've been calling around to no-kill shelters and rescues (all of which are already overburdened), but the simple fact is that they need to be socialized to people in order to be considered adoptable first - lots of petting, playing, holding and handling. I desperately need help with this part. One or two kittens I could do, but there simply aren't enough of me to give five kittens enough attention to really win them over.

So, I'm putting out a bit of a distress call here. If you're in the market for a kitten, know someone else who is seriously interested in adopting, know someone willing to foster, or know of any rescue groups or foster associations that have operations in Missouri or even Illinois, I would very much like to hear about it. I'm willing to foot the bills for their first vaccinations and even spay/neuter if anyone out there has an open spot in their home.

Thanks guys.

Some sketches from Anthrocon panels, other convention art and reward requests. The drawings at the top were characters designed on the spot by the live-draw panel audience. They selected a fennec fox and a caribou.I don't always post this sort of thing because, well, not everything seems quite worthy of a post, but I had a request from patron Garrett S. to share them.

An attempt at answering a Patron question (from Daniel G.) with some notes about rhythm in a drawing and how I try to portray motion in gestures and poses.

I'm not sure I've done a particularly good job of explaining rhythm here - it's sort of a novel length topic, quite related to line of action or flow - but it is definitely one of the more prominent things that distinguishes natural looking character drawings from more awkward ones. It's also something an artist adopts an understanding of with practice, and one of the reasons that life-drawing is emphasized in art curriculums.

Anyway, hopefully there's some useful information here for someone. I've got additional notes about shape volumes, construction drawing and line of action here:

Missouri State Penitentiary-

My birthday was a couple of days ago as was my friend's, so we decided to treat ourselves to a little prison time. That is to say, we went to tour the Missouri State Penitentiary, which operated between 1836 and 2004 and, for a time, was the nation's largest prison complex.

This fortress of a place was host to a number of famous and infamous prisoners (Emma Goldman, "Pretty Boy" Floyd, Sonny Liston, James Earl Ray), numerous executions, riots, fires, a gas chamber and a bonafide dungeon. It's a popular spot for paranormal investigations as well. I'm not so sure about the purported haunts, but the place itself is truly haunting, heavily textured by time, grime and lore - a ruinous, tactile story of human failings, whichever side of the law.

Anyway, photos scarcely do its character justice, but since it's sort of related to Lackadaisy from a historical angle, I thought I'd share a little collection of photos Patrick and I took there. I added notes to many of the images, in case anyone is interested by this sort of thing.

The Album is here.

Ryan W. asked:

How was high Mordecai when they had to take the bullets out of him in Lackadaisy Momentum and how was he afterwards? I can only imagine they used the same horse doctor after all and we all remember Viktor's experience with him. If it made Viktor smile, I wonder what it did to Serious McGrumpy pants!

----------------------------------------

Well, an injection of morphia alleviated him of an array of neuroses, at least temporarily. By virtue of proximity, the task was actually left to Elsa.

This art is quite overworked for the relative non-story that this is. I was trying to use the opportunity to experiment with some new software and alternate approaches to the background art. None of what's here is quite right, but Filter Forge - which allows you to create your own custom filters - seems promising. I may be able to use it to automate some of the more repetitive processing I otherwise do by hand. (I'm looking for ways to speed up my workflow for Volume 3).

Also, too much Mordecai lately. Sorry about that. I will try to change things up a bit more.

"Lackadaisy Dandelion" Process

Wed Jul 20 01:08:45 2016

First attempt at a process video.

I cut out a bunch of color adjustment work at the very end because I was waffling back and forth about altering the strictly gold palette or sticking with it...for hours. In retrospect, I think I probably should have left the original colors, but that much yellow gets to be unpleasant once you've stared at it for 16 or so hours.

I also zoomed in on the video clip for much of it because I wasn't sure how helpful seeing the Photoshop menus would be at this speed. That also might not have been the right thing to do. I don't know.

Anyway, the point is that feedback is welcome so that I can do better next time.

I've put together a little album of Anthrocon 2016 photos here. There's at least one short video included as well, and a few of the sketches I did for attendees on the second page.

Many thanks to both Jay and Angela who were not only exceedingly helpful at the con, but took a lot of these photos while I was running around googly-eyed, flapping my wings and trying to figure out where I needed to be next. Also, thank you to Ragark who actually managed to find the Rocky and Mordecai in the photo of the 2100 fur suits.

Volume 2 Pre-Orders Open

Thu Jun 16 03:34:19 2016

TheVolume 2 Hardcover book is now available for pre-order. Books should begin shipping in late July.

If you're a $5+ Patron, you also should have received a message from me containing a discount coupon for the book. If for some reason you did not receive one, please let me know (either by message or in a comment here) and I will remedy that, forthwith!

The2017 Calendarand numerous prints are newly available in the4DE Storeas well.

--------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------

A few notes:

***You'll probably notice the price has gone up on this hardcover. This is in part because of the larger dimensions of the book, and in part because it's a much longer volume than its predecessor. All of these things are my fault. From a purely business standpoint, Volume 2 should have been split into two separate volumes. I am a bad businessperson, though, and I thought it worked better as a whole, so I insisted upon keeping it that way. Hopefully, in the end, it is worth the added cost. It's a pretty hefty book, comparatively, and a lot of work and blood and sweat and literal tears went into it. Also a fair amount of screaming.

***There are tentative plans for a softcover, in case you were going to ask. That is all contingent on the hardcover not utterly tanking in sales, though. No guarantees, unfortunately, but I'm hopeful.

***4DE does ship overseas. However, the cost of said shipping is growing ever more expensive, especially for the bigger European markets. They love to slap tariffs all over incoming media. It's pretty ludicrous at this point, really. That is frustratingly beyond my control or that of my publisher. We are seeking distribution partners, though, so that Lackadaisy might be purchased by European readers locally and without the added punch in the face . (And hey, if you happen to have a favorite little comic shop in the UK, France or anywhere else in the region, it certainly wouldn't hurt to ask them who they order their books from and then pass the name along to me. I'd be ever so grateful.)

Lastly, thanks, everyone. You really made this possible. I love you for it, and I can't wait to get rolling on Volume 3.

Volume 2 Proof

Tue Jun 7 05:26:55 2016

Welp...it'll be a more effective bludgeoning instrument than Volume 1, at least.

This is just the proof. The cover colors won't look so dull, and will have some spot UV shine in the final product. I've also adjusted the tones and sent the modified version off to the printer to de-purple-ize a bit. Overall, though, this is what the Volume 2 hardcover will look like.

They should be available and shipping in the latter half of July. Orders will open soon, and I'm going to send some coupon codes out so that any $5+ Patrons looking to purchase one needn't pay full price.

I do apologize for any Volume 1 owners who were perhaps wanting a second volume with the same dimensions to line up on a shelf. I can see how this might be annoying. Faced with the option to cram a lot of art and text into a small space (as I felt I did with Volume 1, regrettably) or to scale up, I opted for the latter - to just let it breathe and take up the space it needed. 4DE will be following up with a reprint of Volume 1 at this new size as well.

Lastly, I've updated the Volume 2 PDF to include the cover and back cover art. For those of you with access to the PDF rewards, you can find it here.

Process Q&A

Tue May 31 13:40:48 2016

**This post doesn't display properly in the mobile app - best viewed on desktop**

New mini-comic coming up shortly. Meanwhile, here are some responses to Patron questions about process.

Some of the images below are clickable thumbnails. Sorry about that - couldn't add full size images to this already enormous post.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Erika H. asked:

Actually, the image above of Daisy dancing is the perfect example for my question! Where do you find inspiration for the more abstract and design-focused parts of your work, things like fabric patterns, abstracted backgrounds, jewelry design?

Thanks! Frequently, for smaller pieces especially, I rely on memory to sort of invent something while I’m working. Being immersed in the 1920s/deco subject matter for so long has that advantage, I suppose.

For bigger, more detailed pieces, I collect a bunch of reference and inspiration images into a sort of ‘idea pile’ bitmap which I keep open on my desktop while I work. It’ll usually include samples of color schemes I like, examples of whatever sort of mood I’m trying to achieve with lighting, fabric patterns, deco designs, and photos of anything I want to try to depict with some accuracy (cars, guns, architecture). As I work, I take some cues from those visual references and combine them with whatever’s in my head to build something different of my own.

Some examples of my reference compilations and corresponding paintings:

I’ve accumulated a number of books that have made for handy references, and I’m an insatiable internet image collector as well. It’s useful to have a library of pictures on hand to peruse when you're in the planning stages of something new and need to jump start your visual thought process. It’s pretty amazing what you can learn through mere realization too. Stumbling across a picture that uses an unusual and bold color scheme you haven’t considered before, that incorporates lighting in a particularly effective way, that takes some novel approach to combining an abstracted background with a foreground subject - any such thing can make for new concept additions to your own toolbox. (I guess that was the long way of saying it's helpful to look at stuff.)

Perhaps, if Patrons are interested, I can make a 'secret' Pinterest board to share my collection of Lackadaisy related references.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dana A. asked:

A little late to the party, I know, but I was wondering if you could explain a bit about how you go about with the backgrounds of your comic. They are more detailed than any comic I've ever seen! Do you use old photos of that era as reference, or do you just design them all yourself? Thank you, Tracy, you're fabulous!

A little of all of the above. If I’m trying to depict an actual place in St. Louis, I will usually gather photo references and work from those. The Bevo Mill, for instance, is a structure that’s still standing and looks roughly the same today as it did in the 1920s. That one was comparatively easy.

In other situations when a story setting is one of my fictional contrivances, no longer exists as it did, or was not widely photographed when it did exist, it becomes a bit trickier to try to concoct a reasonably authentic looking place. The police station that Zib winds lands in is a pretty good example of one of the more involved processes I use to stitch together a background.

There were a lot of photos of the exteriors of the old St. Louis Metro Police station houses, but the interiors were another story. I’m sure they were pretty mundane on the inside, and though I dug around a lot for some pictures, it seems no one really bothered about photographing them in the early 20th century. With little specific reference material to work with, I had to fill in the gaps with a mix of references of similar places and some straight up fabrication.

Photo 1 (below) is actually the only decent period-specific station interior from St. Louis I managed to scrounge up. The office space in the station depicted on the page entitled ‘Lackadaisy Misdemeanor’ (above) was influenced by that. The image marked 2 is of a larger, more remarkable station lockup in Chicago. I really liked the combination of pipes and grimy walls, so I pulled some inspiration from there as well. Photo 3 is an old station house door repurposed as a museum door, and so I based the large door in my semi-fictional station on that. Of course, I did my best to make the police uniforms look authentic too.

For ‘Lackadaisy Sabbatical’, I was revisiting the same station that had appeared earlier in Volume 2. I wasn’t quite satisfied with how it looked the first time around - pretty dull - so I thought a lot about how I might make it look more interesting while I worked on the thumbnails and dialogue in tandem. (Draft versions of both:)

The short exchange between Dom and Zib on the stairs seemed like the highlight of the character interactions there, so I felt it called for some more visual interest too. Because everyone is moving around, it was also a little tricky to convey. I figured camera angles would be key, so I built a rough 3D model of the station to approximate the design I’d already been working with. This way, I could fly a virtual camera around inside to see if I could find some more interesting angles to capture this otherwise plain-looking place from while keeping the action as clear as possible.

I ended up settling on something that was pretty close to what I had come up with in my thumbnails - a moderate high angle and low angle of the staircase. Then I started drawing out the backgrounds for those panels, using the simple box model I had built as a perspective guideline. Once I had the background blocked in digitally, I composited the pencil-drawn character art into place, painted my lighting/values in, polished it up, and added color and texture.

It’s time consuming, but I find I’m enjoying the process and I'm thinking of environments more as characters unto themselves rather than approaching them like unpleasant chores. Hopefully it also means the comic's backgrounds have been looking a little stronger lately.

Rakusaru asked

"Can we see the Lackadaisy cast as dogs? I've always been curious what they would look like."

I did a lot of these in the last Patron livestream - many of the breed choices were the result of suggestions from the chat (the consensus seemed to be that Zib was more vulpine then canine, however). Had a lot of fun with it. It turned out to be a pretty good exercise in character design too...or redesign, as it were.

I don't know why the date is the only clickable thing that takes you to the full posting now, but I've heard there's a change/fix for that in the works.)

Proposed t-shirt design for Anthrocon. They caught wind of this image of Zib and asked for something with a similar theme. The shirt will be a spot color dealy, though, so I had to take a different approach with the art here. Ultimately, I might need to pull back on the swirly nonsense to open up the composition a little more.

I've been invited to be a guest at Anthrocon this year, mostly because they're doing a 1920's theme for their 20th anniversary. The arrangement involved doing the cover art for the conbook, of course.

It's a wrap-around, so the front cover is the right half of the image and the back is the left (picturing a parody Arrow Collar ad). It's not Lackadaisy exactly, but close enough that I figured I'd be justified in sharing it here. And I'm not supposed to be showing this around before the convention...but Patrons get a pass.

I've uploaded a larger version of the imagehere, in case anyone is interested.

As always, feel free to join me while I work on some artwork - chat, ask questions or just lurk in the shadows.

(My 17 year old cat , Calvin, is very sick right now and nearing the end of his life. Just as a precautionary note and apology in advance, if things take a turn for the terrible in the middle of next week, I may have to cancel and reschedule the stream. If that is the case, I will send out a message to let everyone know.)

This is how the Volume 2 cover is looking. I figured I'd give Patrons the first look at it. I left the title art out for display here since, well, you know what the title of the thing is. If anyone's interested in wallpapers, I'll happily make those available.

Also, thank you for all of your questions on the last post! I have collected them and will start posting responses later this month, a few at a time.

Posting with an ulterior motive, however....

Questions Invitation

Most of the mini-comics and mini-tutorials I've drawn over the past few years were the result of a question someone asked about characters or comic-making. Because I'd like to keepon drawing comics for you guys while I've got Volume 3 development and book and convention prep going on in the background, I figured I'd put an open invitation out to submit questions.

If you don't have any, that's fine - I've got a backlog of them from tumblr to work with, but I'd like to give Patrons priority! If you do have some, feel free to leave them as a comment here on this post, or drop me a message.

*Not every question can result in a comic or drawing as a response, but I'll try to answer all questions one way or another.

Hey, guys! Here's what's up with Volume 2 - you should see it as a downloadable attachment here. (Warning - it's about 100MB, so you might not want to download it to a phone. It should be nice and big and easy to read on a monitor, though).

This is close to going off to print. A few things still need to be added or touched up - the cover art isn't included yet, page numbers at the bottom corners aren't added yet, and the bleed is obvious in some places (you might see some rough looking spots along the edges - that'll get trimmed off in the printing process). Once all of that is polished up, I'll update the downloadable file link here. I didn't want to go any longer without making something substantial available to Patrons this month, though. Putting this thing together and reformatting all the pages has consumed my life for the past several weeks. I feel this is a pretty good representation of what the book will look like, in any case. I hope you like it!

I've also included the Volume 1 PDF here for any $5+ Patrons who haven't gotten their copy yet.

Rocky as the Joker. This was one of the sketch requests from the last livestream. I did most of the coloring during the stream, but it was a fun little reprieve from some of the other things I've been working on, so I figured I'd polish it up a little and post it here. Thanks to whoever made the suggestion! I'm sorry I don't recall specifically who did...or it might have been a sort of group consensus. There was a lot of Bat-chat to sift through.

Anyway, I sort of like the third image down better than I like the final product, but

Some thumbnail sheets from Volume 2. I was originally going to post these as a sort of kitten update because Maya has chewed holes in every single one of these pieces of paper, but the scanner did a remarkably good job of lighting the sheets such that the holes are barely discernible. Oh well. You can probably see some of the paw smudges, though.

Anyway, I thought these still might be of minor curiosity to some of you as a part of the process of making a comic. Each of these began as lines of dialogue typed out in a Google doc, along with some brief location descriptions. From there, I take it and start scribbling these thumbnails to match up the words and imagery. Frequently, what I had originally written down doesn't translate in any interesting way to visuals or I find I've put emphasis in the wrong places and need to restructure the scene pictorially, so these tend to go through multiple revisions, and I'll often end up doing sweeping rewrites of dialogue right on the paper side by side with the sketches. Typing out scripts is pretty dry work for me, but working with words and pictures in tandem like this really helps the story coagulate in my mind.

Also, I'm sorry there hasn't been much in the way of new art yet this month. I just finished all of the comic page layouts for the Volume 2 book. What a project that was. It's 139 pages in total (as compared to the 66 pages of the Volume 1 book that the comic occupies). I still have some small art revisions to do, mini-comics and extras to format for the back of Volume 2, but I'll also have some new stuff to share soon!

Hope to see you there!

Looking ahead, is there anything among my comic art, playing card art, illustrations or even sketches that you guys would like to see as a wallpaper? Ideally, of course, I'd like to be making things that Patrons are most interested in, so if you have some thoughts, please share!

Lackadaisy Whirlwind

I do hope you've enjoyed the 'book'. I've been at it for so long, calling it complete feels a bit unreal at the moment. I really don't think I could have finished without you all, though. Trudging onward with it under the burden of a game industry job was taking its toll. Too much time was lost to empty-feeling toil that kept finding its way into the trash, and on the comic side, physical exhaustion, frustration, disappointment and heartache was piling up. Patronage has defibrillated this faltering labor back to life, though. It utterly changed everything.

So, again, thank youfor your support (financial and moral) and for bearing with me. It means the world, and above all, I hope you are finding this worthy and worthwhile.

Of course, a great deal of Volume 2 is build-up and set-up for things that happen in Volume 3. I'm excited to get started on that (it's rather more action oriented than this volume has been). I'll be back soon with some details about when Volume 3 will begin, and what stuff I'll be doing and sharing with you guys in the coming months.

Layout, Layout, Layout

Mon Mar 21 07:36:03 2016

I've been spending a lot of time this month reformatting all of Volume 2 into book-shape. A lot of what's on the web site will end up rearranged for print, so I thought I'd share a little bit of what I'm doing. Above are some sample page spreads.

I've also attached a downloadable ZIP file here that contains the layouts for the first half of the book. There are some obvious rough spots where I'll be going back to rejigger/repaint come large panels, places where I need to do color and value correction still, and a lot of blank spaces where the dialogue will be, but it's otherwise representative of how the book is shaping up, in case anyone is curious to see.

Of course, the last of the comic art is still yet to be completed, but it's getting there. I'll host another livestream this week while I'm doing some more work on that! Details soon.

I don't recall who made the suggestion, but thank you!

The last comic update for Volume 2 is underway, and I'm doing a ton of layout work to reformat all of the pages on the web into book shape right now. It's...quite a project. If anyone is interested in seeing a breakdown of how the pages are looking so far, I can share some of that here.

Kind of a half-update - one more small bit to go for Volume 2. I'm frustrated that I'm not done with the whole thing yet, but I figured I could at least share this much in the meantime.

While on the topic of smaller updates, this represents basically one book page. Most of the prior updates have actually been comprised of 2-3 book pages mashed together. I have a preference for doing larger updates for the sake of story flow, but what do you guys think? As I'm considering my approach to Volume 3 and how best to keep Patrons happy, would you prefer more frequent updates of this size? Are the larger but slower updates more satisfying to read? If you have an opinion, please feel free to share it!

Look at this thing - it turned into a cat.

Just another update on Maya. I can't believe how fast she's grown, so I thought I'd include a little chronology. She's actually got her appointment to be spayed this week which, even though it's entirely routine, has me a little worried. I can't help it.

I also want to reiterate my thanks to patrons here. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't be working at home, and if I wasn't working at home, I wouldn't have been able to give this little jellybean all the care and attention she needed at first. The shelters I had contacted were already overflowing with kittens, so I don't know what I could have done otherwise to assure that she was looked after.

I guess what I'm trying to say is...THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT.

Really, though, thank you. <3

Update stuff:

Part 1 of the incoming comic update will be up after this weekend.

As with everything else in the wake of the rain storm, I'm behind where I'd like to be with digital reward drawings. I should be finishing up Volume 2 comic content in February, though, and as soon as that's done, I'll devote the subsequent couple of weeks to completing and delivering all patron art presently on my list. After that, I'll be doing some cover art for the Volume 2 book and, of course, I'll share the steps of that process here too.

**If you're a $20 tier patron who hasn't requested your drawing yet, feel free to either send me a message or leave a comment here explaining what you'd like, and I'll get you on that list!

The Year Ahead:

Things got a little wacky around New Years, but now that life is on a more even keel again, I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your support and readership in 2015. It was such a life-altering, flagship year for me and this here project that I have trouble articulating my gratitude. Anyway, I suppose the better way to express that gratitude is with substance rather than words, and that's what I intend to do throughout 2016.

There's a great deal in the pipeline. So much I think I'm going to need to hire a part time assistant, in fact. On the docket is getting Volume 2 to print, getting the art and materials together for the playing card deck, compiling an art book, developing Volume 3, making Volume 1 French and Spanish translations available, creating a new tutorial or two that I've had in mind, mini-comics and more. The prospect of sharing these things with you all means everything to me, and I hope you guys will enjoy it even a fraction as much as I will enjoy making it.

Now, with all of that to tackle, I had better get back to work.

Thank you, Patrons.

Update:

I've pumped the water out of my cellar, my heat and hot water are back on, I've cleaned up and dried off what I can, dealt with some of my equipment issues, and though my upstairs will need some professional repairs, the damage isn't nearly as devastating as some people here are facing after the flood. I'm just thankful my house is livable right now. As of tonight, I'm back to making forward progress on comics.

Once again, thank you everyone for your understanding and patience. It has made a pretty cruddy situation much more bearable.

Also, happy New Year!

Holiday Hell

Sun Dec 27 23:28:21 2015

Here's a messy drawing of Zib for no particular reason.

Comics are underway, but I don't know that I'll be posting as much content as I wanted to or as soon as I wanted to, before the end of the month. I'd characterize the past week as an unrelenting comedy of errors...except that none of what's happened has been very funny. Mostly just broken and wet.

I've been in Massachusetts the past week to see family for the holiday. I brought my equipment with me so I could keep working on comic pages while here, but my laptop keeps black-screening and my Cintiq didn't make the trip fully in tact. It currently looks like this, held together with wood and tape to try to keep the cable connection as much in place as possible. This hasn't been very conducive to progress.

More problematic, though, is the record breaking rainfall happening in St. Louis right now. My cellar has flooded and my roof is leaking everywhere, including onto my desktop computer and large Cintiq at home...and I'm not there to do a single thing about it. I'm lucky to have friends and cat-sitters valiantly doing damage control at the moment, but it looks like late tomorrow I'll be coming home to a very wet, very cold house (the cellar flood killed my heater). This is not good...but I don't know yet just how not good, whether or not I'll need to live elsewhere for a time or if I'll even have functioning electronics to work with.

I was very excited to be so close to sharing the final bits and pieces of Volume 2 with everyone, but it doesn't seem that's going to happen on the intended schedule. I'll do my best to get at least something up before New Years, but because everything is pretty uncertain right now, I felt I should post an update here to explain myself.

With no aspirations to martyrdom, if you wish to alter or drop pledges, I absolutely understand. You've all been very wonderful, I'll be interminably grateful for your support, and you deserve better than this. No matter how much I wish I was in control of the present situation, though, I'm not, and I do apologize.

How to Get Your Club Pin

Tue Dec 8 08:17:14 2015

This is a one-time discount for the full price of a pin. You pay for shipping only.

For some of you, this is repeat information - my apologies! I just want to make sure new patrons and anyone who hasn't gotten a pin yet knows how to do it.
----------------------------------------------------------

Instructions:

Visit the 4DE.com shop, log in or register an account if you don't already have one, and add a Lackadaisy Club Pin to your cart. Once you've done that, visit your Shopping Cart and under the 'What would you like to do next?' header, select the Use Promotion Coupon Code radio button (it's the second one). A blank field should appear - enter the following:

Click the Apply Coupon button, and you should see the cost of the pin subtracted from your total. That's it! You can check out or continue shopping from there.
----------------------------------------------------------

**note - the coupon applies only to "Lackadaisy Club Pins" and not to limited edition 1928 pins.

If you have any difficulty, you can leave a message here and I'll do what I can to help. For questions about orders, you can contact sales@4de.com

Please don't hand out the coupon code to non-patrons. If it gets abused, 4DE will have to rescind it.

If you're interested, all you need to do is visit the 4DE.com shop, log in or register an account if you don't already have one, and add a calendar to your cart. Once you've done that, visit your Shopping Cart and under the 'What would you like to do next?' header, select the Use Promotion Coupon Code radio button (it's the second one). A blank field should appear - enter the following:

Click the Apply Coupon button, and you should see a $5.00 subtraction from your order total.

------------------------------
It's not much, but if you were thinking of buying a calendar anyway, at least it's a little cheaper now! I'll soon be sending out reminder instructions for $5+ patrons who haven't gotten their free pin (minus the cost of shipping) yet as well.

In case any of you are following along, I've posted a new video of Maya playing in the leaves here. She's doing quite well lately.

(I'm limiting these kitten updates to one a month, but if they get tiresome, just say so. I know it's not exactly what you're here for.)

Next live stream will be Friday, November 13th at 6:30pm CST at my Twitch Channel.

I'll likely work on some reward art and some drawings of human character faces (per request). As usual, if you have any questions for me about art process, the comic or related topics, feel free to join the chat and ask!

Hope to see you there!

Wallpaper #12 - Barony

Mon Nov 2 19:32:21 2015

Attached here is a set of desktop and device wallpapers made from this latest piece of art. There's also a 'full size' image included that can be cropped to custom shapes and sizes.

Since I just posted the art itself, I figured I'd include a little process breakdown here instead of the usual thumbnail image. My approach doesn't usually involve inking over my pencils to create clean linework, then doing color flats, but I figured I'd try something a little different this time.

Happy Halloween, guys!

The full size version of this can be seen here.

This was actually the art I started on in the last livestream, though I've reworked it quite a bit since then. The costumes are historical gobbledygook, but were fun to draw and are intended to be reminiscent (if only vaguely) of the Barons La Croix, Kriminel and Cimitière - aspects of the better known Baron Samedi.

I'll post the linework and a wallpaper version of this in a bit, if anyone is interested. Also forthcoming is some preview art from new comic pages.

Further pancakery. The top portion is a piece of reward art, actually. For some reason it spawned a tiny-mini-comic. Sometimes these things happen.

(It occurs to me as I'm posting this that the last panel might not make sense if you aren't familiar with what a confessional is, in which case, sorry for communicating poorly.)

Kitten Update: The Kittening

Sun Oct 18 16:55:22 2015

The little bean has made a lot of progress this month. She's on solid/moist food now (which she flings herself into full-body at feeding time), using the litter box on her own, and generally doing all the things a kitten ought to. These photos paint a very snuggly picture, but in the flip of a switch, she's a galloping, leaping, tackle-fight-hop-hop jumping bean.

There's a video of her in motion here (but it hardly conveys just how much bouncing off the walls she's been doing the past couple of days).

I want to thank everyone for all of the name suggestions! It's been difficult to choose, but she's now entitled Maya (even though the moniker Jellybean remains in use more often than not).

Sun Oct 18 01:30:33 2015

The full size version can be found here, in case Patreon's image dimension limits make this difficult to read.

I'm sorry this is so dreadfully late. September was bizarre and full of derailments, some taxing, some unkind...but October is for making up lost time in as much as I'm able. You guys are amazing, and thank you for your patience.

As for the comic, I've been asked more than once what makes Mordecai smile. There are somewhat meaner ways than this to answer that, but I guess I went for

the more saccharine of options. The kitten made me do it. (At least 40% of the digital work on this was done with her climbing over my shoulders and trying to wrestle with my drawing hand. She provided much inspiration here...almost as much as she provided distraction.)

Just sharing some more recent reward art.

Also, a small update:
This month's comic is forthcoming. I'm doing everything I can not to be late with it, but it'll be a bit different this time around. I had planned another double-sized canon comic but shifted gears about halfway through the month. The tumult caused by the unexpected arrival of an itty-bitty kitten and some bad news about the health of a close family member cut into my sleep time enough that I just haven't been functioning at full capacity the past few weeks. So, feeling like I couldn't really do a canon update justice, next will be a large "mini"-comic instead. I hope it doesn't prove disappointing for anyone (I'm having fun with it - it's highly kitten-inspired), but you are, of course, absolutely free to decline your pledge if things here aren't meeting with your expectations. The canon comic updates will resume in October.

Orphan Baby - Derpin'

Fri Sep 18 10:46:44 2015

I promise not to spam any more of this kitten stuff here this month - just posting an update for those who were interested.

Earlier this week, she ended up at the emergency vet multiple times. The plague of digestive unrest she's had since the beginning escalated eventually into respiratory distress and lethargy. The vet thought she had developed aspiration pneumonia and came very close to convincing me to euthanize, as that would surely be a death sentence for her. I'm so very glad I couldn't muster the willpower (or presence of mind) to agree. Around 4am, after the 8th vet visit in 7 days and very little sleep, I just stood in the exam room for an hour and sobbed all over the top of her instead. So the clinic staff relented and we agreed to try for a long shot - an oxygen chamber, sub-q fluids and antibiotics. I left her there, went home and began packing up all of her blankets and bottles, thinking I'd never see her again. However, when I called to check on her a few hazy hours later, they said she was okay. Later, they said she seemed pretty good, actually. Then they said she was doing great. A little more than a day later, they told me "We're not sure this little stinker is even sick. You can come pick her up." We're all still mystified as to why her breathing became so ragged, but she's back home now. She's on yet more meds, but generally acting like a mini-kitten ought to. Even the digestive issues seem to be in check...for the moment. Here's hoping for some smoother sailing ahead. The poor little bean has been through a lot.

After all that, it's time to name her. She's certainly earned it. She was checked into the hospital underMina, but that was just something that came to mind when filling out the paperwork. Others have suggested Penelope or Arya. I'm not decided yet, though. If you guys have any ideas, throw some names at me!

Lackadaisy "Audio Contemplation"

Mon Sep 14 04:20:35 2015

This Friday, September 18th at 8:00pm CST, this audio adaptation of some of the more recent parts of the comic will go online here. This is entirely a fan-produced piece of work, but having heard some previews along the way, I can vouch for its incredible quality.

Starting with the premiere of the video at 8:00, I'll be hosting a chat. Elson and some of the other voice actors will be there as well. Everyone's invited - it should be a fun evening, so if you have a chance, stop by!

So, this landed in my lap a few days ago. Not exactly a Lackadaisy post, obvious correlations aside, but I thought some of you might be interested...or maybe even have some experienced advice. My neighbors found her seemingly abandoned near their workplace and, probably knowing that I couldn't say no, they brought her to me.

Right now, I'm just doing my best to keep her alive...which requires a remarkable amount of effort considering she's a squeaky jellybean with legs. She needs formula feedings every 1-2 hours, day and night, needs a lot of monitoring even when sleeping because she can't yet regulate her body temp, and has already been back and forth to the vet numerous times for what may or may not be a coccidia infection. Then there are the fleas, who must be dealt with before they cause anemia, and who must be dealt with manually because she's too little for chemical treatments. It's like a houseflies and chopsticks level challenge.

Anyway, I'm trying to find some sort of experienced foster situation to get her into given that I haven't done this before with unweaned kittens and because the time investment pretty much amounts to "all of it." No luck just yet.

Not holding out a heck of a lot of hope that she'll make it either. They're so fragile at this age, and even moreso when the mother isn't around. I'm doing the best I can, though.

Many thanks to PhoKadat (who happens to be a nearby patron and friend) for coming to the rescue with supplies when I was too tired to drive...and for lending some extra hands toward resolving the near calamitous flea bath situation.

Kind of a double size update again to wrap up this chapter. I promise to stop drawing alligators all over everything...for a little while at least.

In Haitian Voodoo (and New Orleans Voodoo by extension), it's believed that a spirit may be invoked as a garde (or gad) for an individual through various ritualistic methods, sometimes involving branding or scarification. Of course, it's generally a much more voluntary rite than Serafine seems to have made it here.

The latest wallpaper (editing courtesy of Whiteley) set comes with both sepia and full color versions and, as usual, common desktop and device aspect ratios are included. Hope you like it! It seemed a fitting one to do considering the latest chapter of the comic.

I'm working my way through various paintings from the gallery for the wallpapers, but if there are specific things any of you would like to see - comic panels, drawings, paintings, collages - please say so! I much prefer making things you guys are interested in!

For those who've ordered pins - they are on the way. 4DE had not yet shipped everything out from the end of June before being swept up into a series of conventions, so if your order was still listed as 'pending', that's why. Things are shipping again now that everyone's back from SDCC, though. I'm sorry the delay.

Q&A

Mon May 25 01:08:05 2015

This is from tumblr originally. I'm not sure how many of you follow me there, though, so I figured I'd share it here too:

---------------------------------------------------------
errantobserver asked:
"How do you differentiate expressions for characters like Mordecai, who seem to be more comfortable scowling than smiling. Whenever I try to draw characters like that, all their expressions start to look similar. How do you get across that?"
---------------------------------------------------------

I've likened expression drawing to acting before, and I think that pertains here too. Expressions concocted in a situational vacuum will tend to look vague or generic. Considering a character's nature, their context and their motivations, as it were, the way an actor prepares for a performance, can make an expression much more specific, layered and nuanced. For instance, what you might, at a basic level, consider to be a 'scowl' is probably an aggregate of multiple feelings and expressions. I find it useful to ask myself questions about it while I'm drawing.

Is the scowl directed at another character? If so, perhaps it looks confrontational or aggressive. Maybe, combined with narrowed eyes, it's also a threat? Maybe it's less deliberate, like a reaction to something another character has just said or done. Is there disgust or disdain mixed in? Maybe it has levity, like a response to a bad joke. Perhaps the scowl is detached as if the character is just quietly thinking of something unpleasant. Maybe there's something pensive or concerned in the look. Maybe there's an air of casual arrogance or superiority about it…or disappointment..or boredom…or contempt…or maybe one brow has a quizzical tilt…or maybe the eyes are wide and intense. How pronounced is the expression? Does the situation call for some exaggerated facial contortion or is the expression a subtle one? Is the mouth drooping or is it drawn back into an active frown? Are the lips sneering, bearing teeth, or pursed like the character is holding back an expletive? How would this particular character perceive the situation - would they overreact or under-react? Are they considering the feelings beyond their own, partially reflecting the emotions of another character? Are they angered but sympathetic? Are they in a familiar, comfortable place, or are they discomfited while wearing their scowl? How would their posture be affected? How might the angle of their spine, neck and shoulders factor in? Are they wilted over like they've given up, tilting their head to one side like they aren't quite sure what's going on, or leaning back like they want to backpedal out of the room?

If you think it through - figure how to make the expression specific to its circumstances, tailor it to the character wearing it, calculate what other emotions factor in - you'll find there are probably endless ways to draw a scowl. This also seems to be effective for really establishing a character's personality and making them appear authentically engaged with their world - alive in it

A 3d model by Jochen Bremer for another keychain prototype. It's still a work in progress with some things left to adjust, but I thought it was looking pretty cute/funny/slick already, so here's a little patron-only preview.

The original post about keychains is here:

Here's a bit of a process breakdown for the picture of Nina and Sophie, starting with a scanned pencil drawing.

(Some of you saw me working on this during the live stream - I'll post some progress images if anyone is interested.)

Wallpaper #3 - Bayou

Sun Apr 19 23:30:17 2015

Rather a dark and eerie image for a wallpaper, but I had a few requests for this one, once upon a time. As before, the most common aspect ratios for desktop displays and some devices are included, along with a full size image that can be cropped to your liking.

The prior wallpapers are a bit buried in the Activity Feed, so here are some links:

The first live stream for patrons will be this coming Monday, April 20th starting at 7:30PM CST at http://www.twitch.tv/lackatracy

I'll be working either on a small illustration or some of the reward drawings while answering questions. Twitch doesn't allow me to make the stream private, but should we have an issue with interlopers, I'll invite patrons into a private chat group.

Hey, everyone!
Just to update you on Milestone rewards status, the club pins are currently in production, and as soon as they're in stock, I'll spread the coupons around.

The art book is underway as well. Editing together a book takes time, but Heather Moore is on the job (as she was with books and calendars) and she's quite good at this sort of thing.
-----------------------------------

Now that the initial Milestone Goals have been met, though, I thought I'd petition for some ideas for additional goals. Some patrons have expressed an interest in printable stickers and in more tutorials. I'm considering making a Spanish or French translation of the comic available online as well....but what would you be interested in? If you have and opinions on the topic or if there's something specific you'd like to see as a reward, please share!

As promised, here is the Lackadaisy Volume 1 PDF! This should be easy to view on any computer or PDF-capable e-reader at a pretty crisp resolution. If you encounter any trouble viewing the file, though, do let me know.

Second wallpaper, including some variants. As before, there's also full size image included in case anyone wants to crop the art to their liking to create their own wallpaper or avatar icons.

Oh, wow. All milestone goals met. I'm going to have to think up some new ones. But for now, I hardly know what to say. I did not expect a turnout like this. Thank you everyone! Thank you so much! It has been my dream to be able to do this for sooo long.

This doesn't represent completed work, but it's an in-progress concept for little 3d keychains that my publisher is considering having made. The model is by Brian H (and is also a work in progress).

Wallpaper #1 - Character Collage

Fri Apr 10 01:31:22 2015

The first of the wallpaper collection is here! I had a few special requests for the collages of character drawings in desktop dimensions, so I've kicked off with that one.

In the attached ZIP file, you'll find images fitting the most common display aspect ratios as well as some images sized for common smartphone displays. Also included is a large version of the full image which you can crop and trim to your liking to create your own wallpaper or avatar icons.
