Coming Week

This week Null is going to work on bugfixes and performance improvement for the big water area. We hope to have a hotfix out soon. Personally I'm looking forward to designing the next enemy... about time! Kobolds are cute 'n all but variety is a the spice of life!

Upcoming Build

The upcoming build will include at least one new enemy and some new hazards and traps. As we are getting close to redesigning the jungle world from scratch as described in previous posts, we need a wider palette of of enemies and traps and that's going to be my main focus.

Hi everyone!

First of all, sorry for the lack of a roundup. Two days after we released the latest Kincaid build our cat Paula passed away. It's been very hard on us and we needed a few days to mourn and regroup. We miss her so much.

I'll be back on monday with a proper roundup. Thank you for your patience. <3

Thank you Lasso for the sweet picture you drew, it means a lot to us.

Here's some pictures of her.

Paula's upper lip was white. It looked like she sipped some milk.


Her scratching post was right next to our desk. She always watched us work and demanded a lot of pets by gently tapping your shoulder with her paw without the claws out.

We miss you so much.

Hi everyone!

Thank you so much for supporting Kincaid! This build took a LOT out of me. I made a lot of new animations for it including 6 brand new sexy animations and a bunch of player animations.

Gone are the days of the silly "heal roll"!
Gone are the days of the awkward mid-air attack.
Gone are the days of being unable to hit those pesky mosquitos!

The Glitchcaid Rift has now closed (until it might reappear one day with new weird test levels!). Thank you for everyone who tried out the new abilities! We know have a good idea of which moves feel "Kincaidy" and which ones needed to go.

The first one to go was of course the downward smash. It was just too janky to pull off. The hookshot is also going to get a major overhaul, though not in this build. We kept the dash and you can obtain it now in the real world in a whole new, completely optional area: After you beat the wolf, follow the path all the way to the right to reach the new Sunken Temple area where you can find it!

If you want to see the new sexy animations, talk to the queen, leave and go back to her! You can repeat that a few times to see some fun things! ^w~ After you leave the Tree Palace the villagers might also have relaxed a little bit, now that the spy has been driven out!

The old animation was lacking serious impact. Since the blaster shares an energy pool with self-heal, we needed to redesign it. It needed to feel more impactful, satisfying and the hit needs to do more damage as well.

Naughty Kobold Bundle! ~ Wrapping up the coming build

There's not very much left to do for the upcoming build. A few new Kincaid animations are in the works, once for self-heal and one for the underwater dash. The shooting animation is also going to get a face-lift, but I haven't yet decided if it'll make it into this build or the next one.

I'd prefer to add it to this one since the focus of the whole build is on "Polish", so I'd really like to wrap up a big chunk of work on that before moving focus on new content again. ^w^

All the lewd animations that'll go into the build have been done and posted for the Chief Explorer tier and up ($25), but they'll be available to all patrons very soon with the coming build!

Water Shader

At the moment water is just a simple colored surface. Null has been working on a shader to make the water a bit prettier:

It needs some additional layers and effects like bubbles and splashes to make it come to life, but this is a pretty good base I think! ^w^

Highlights of the new build:

Changes to the Legendary Explorer Tier

The main benefit of this tier used to be private streams where I work on new ideas together with the patrons. It worked great in the past and was a ton of fun, but lately it was near impossible to find good times where people can join and participate and even then, most patrons at this tier would be left out.

That's why I have made the final decision to change how the tier works.

The spirit of the tier has always been "behind the scenes", kind of like a studio visit experience, where you get to hang out with us while we work on concepts and designs and weigh in on ideas in real-time.

I want to keep the purpose of the tier the same, but change the format. Instead of doing it as a stream, I will create a new Discord channel specifically for this tier where we share our thought process and what kind of decisions we are making. Basically what we used to do while in voice chat during the streams! I will also just post the results on Patreon, so you can look at it and comment!

During this week's stream I was working on new enemy designs. Unfortunately, nobody could participate so I'll post the results today in a separate post.

This doesn't mean that everybody else will never get to see this. When things get more fleshed out, I will post them for everyone to see like I always have. ^w^

Art Progress

This week I continued working on new animations for Kincaid. Here's a list of what has been done and what I still need to do:

As you can see, I sketched out most of the animations. For most of them I have to wait for Null to put them in the game to see if they feel right in the raw state before I invest the time to refine them further. So that's "on hold" until we have them in the game!

In the mean time I started concepting new enemy ideas as well as sketched out sex animations for more of the Kobold villagers. Check out this week's Sneak Peek to see some of the sex scene ideas!

Kincaid Build 2020.08 (HOTFIX)

Hey, Null here.

I'm really sorry for the delay on this. There was a major GameMaker update. Their original plan was to make the installation availagle parallel to the previous version because so much stuff has changed. Apparently they threw that plan overboard, so it replaced the version I was using. They also didn't offer downloads of any of the previous versions on their webpage either. So I decided "Screw it, I need to update to the new version at some point anyway, I'm just going to do it now".

Oh boy. I filed 7 original bug reports to YoYoGames. Most of the time was spent on fixing things that got broken during the project conversion process. Thankfully their support staff was very helpful and responsive.

The HTML5 build can't be done right now because some of the features I am using currently don't even work in the new GameMaker version, so that's out of my hands unfortunately. :/ I have narrowed down the problem. If I can find a work around, I'll do it, otherwise I'll just wait for them to patch things. Sorry!! If you are on a Mac or Linux machine and pledged, just poke me and I will issue a refund.

Either way, it's done and now I can hopefully continue at my usual pace!

EDIT: How to carry over saves:

The folder changed, but the save games should still work. What you need to do is copy the files from C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Local\Kincaid_Prototype to C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Local\Kincaid_2_3

Hi everyone!

Last week I finished two of the new 4 of the new animations for Kincaid:

Swimming up, down and idle

Pushing

Next up I'll do an underwater dash, self-heal, walking into a door, air dash and shooting up&down.

I also did some sketches for new Kincaid illustrations. Lately I've been so focused on making pixel art and I need to shift the gears for a bit so I don't get too rusty. I feel guilty for making art that will not make it directly into the game, but I feel like it's important that I dedicate some time to drawing Kincaid and other characters, too, lest I lose touch with the concepting and design side of things.

Null has finished porting the game over to the new GameMaker version and blasted through most of the bugs you guys found! We also changed the wording on the quest to make it more clear where to find *that person*. ^w~

The Upcoming Build

Aside from some new sexy content the upcoming build focuses mainly on polishing what we made in the previous build. I want to make proper animations for all the abilities, touch up the UI a bit to include energy and currency and Null is working on a shader to make the water look nicer.

Hi everyone!

This week was a big struggle for me. I didn't think the swimming animation would give me so much trouble of all things. I redid it a bunch of times and I am still not really satisfied with it, but I'm going with this one now! I still need to clean it up a little bit but it is mostly done. I hope you like it! >w<

I hope it looks a bit believable for a swimming animation.

The Hotfix and HTML5 releases is almost done, but there is still a big memory leak we are hunting down that makes the game run really slow and then lead to crash if you linger around in a level for a few minutes.

Also GameMaker got a major update and Null is all over that! It's a major update with a lot of new features and he's figuring out how we're going to make use of them.

Last week we published the new build! Obviously, most of the week was focused on wrapping everything up, dotting all i's and crossing all t's.

Even with thorough testing and and bugfixing towards the end, there was still a lot of bugs found already! So you can expect a hotfix soon. We also make the wording on the flight instructor quest more clear, and add a little bit of environmental storytelling so you don't have to look for the guy in the deepest depth of the temple anymore >_> Sorry about that!

Hi everyone, Null here!

Sorry for the very late roundup. I told Cookie I would take care of this one and then I forgot! So I will make it really quick:

Cookie has been working exclusively on the new scene and it is coming along well! You can check it out in the sneak peek! :3

My focus has been a bunch of bug-fixing refactoring work as well as making a hookshot ability, which I did today.

Once the flight instructor scene is done, we will release the new build which is going to add the hut insides as well as the lewd stuff.

The "Kincaid Fully Decked Out" prototype is almost finished, too! We will be sending it out as an Experimental Build to our $25+ Patrons in the next few days before merging it over into the main branch. :3

Another week flew by, so let's check out what went on in our art cave!

Moss Huts

As I waited for the poll to wrap up, I put finishing touches on a lot of the decorations for inside the huts. I'm really happy with how everything looks together! I still need to do a few NPC specific decorations but that should about wrap up my work for the interior. It was a lot of fun to do, but I'm really itching to do lewd art again!

Flight Instructor Scene

Here are some keyframe gestures Null and I made on sticky notes to figure out the dynamics.

I hope this is not too lewd for Patreon uwu

Sketching the gestures for the key frames out on paper helps a lot with figuring out the most important moments in the animation.

New Gameplay Systems & Abilities

Null here! I've been plowing away at new features and doing a lot of experimentation. I don't have animations yet for most of the things coming to Kincaid, but I thought I'd give you some first impressions on how things are looking!

None of these animations are final! Cookie is busy doing background art and sex animations, so I just shamelessly repurposed what I had for now. Dodge roll for everything! xD

Respawn Manager

I made a little respawn manager that makes it so enemies don't immediately respawn when you leave a room and come back. They will come back if you go away a bit further and then come back. Smaller "trash mob" enemies like mosquitos will always respawn.

New Sound Effects

The upcoming build is going to have a bunch of new sound effects, so the wolf act and threesome act are going to be fully voiced finally! A lot of them are already in while a few need some additional adjustments or revisions.

Interior Design

While I was waiting for the poll results to roll in I just did some more environment design. The hut insides still need some love, so I did some mockups to figure out how the kobolds would actually live!

Dev Stream

More Characters added to the village!

I still had some NPCs left that I didn't manage to finish before the build got released so I wrapped up my work on them.

Chieftain

First of all, we have the very lovely village chieftain!

Shaman

We still liked the idea of colored kobolds and wanted to find a way to bring them back into the game. One of our ideas was to make the shaman of the village an albino. But whatever we tried, they always ended up looking like a sorceress!

We really liked her design, though, so they might make an appearance in some other way, shape or form! For now, this design is *rejected* though.

So we went back to some of the other ideas we had and tried to bring in some of the elements we liked from the rejected design.

I iterated on the design more and more until we narrowed it down to what we think is going to be her final design:

Guards & Villagers

To make the village look a bit more lively we need a bunch more people standing and walking around the important hotspots of the area.

There will be guards and villagers and most of them will say a few story or lore tidbits here and there to add to the lively village athmosphere, similar to how JRPGs handle this sort of stuff!

Idle animations for everyone

The village would look static and lifeless without some animations so I also made a short idle for all characters that needed them. Here are some examples!

I always find idle animations a bit weird and hard to make, especially in lower resolutions. I hope I was able to find a type isn't too busy and odd looking!

"Kincaid Fully Decked Out" Prototype

On the code side of things, Null is hard at work at an internal prototype focusing on the remaining abilities we think Kincaid is going to have in the final game.

The idea is that once we know what Kincaid plays and feels like at the final stages of the gameplay, we can then go back and design the world proper around our chosen ability progression.

Up until now, all the levels and areas have been produced "to order", to fit what was currently being worked on. So in the current demo, you get the double jump quite early. But that doesn't really make sense if you also want to have things like, for instance, a dash. A double jump opens up way more world to the player than a dash, so it would be better for the double jump to be acquired a bit later in the game, and the dash a bit earlier.

Once the prototype is done, we will show you guys what we came up with to get a final round of feedback. Once we think Kincaid is in a good spot in terms of abilities and gamefeel, most, if not all, of the current world is going to get scrapped and completely revised to fit the story and game progression.

And at that point we're way on our way to wrapping up the first planet!

At this point, all the major systems and abilities are in the game and our focus shifts to things like her ship, showing more about the story and developing the remaining planets until the game is complete.

Making a non-linear game in what essentially is "early access" is a bit of a challenge, but I think the approach we came up with worked very well!

GameMaker 2.3 Beta got released

GameMaker, the engine we are using for Kincaid, just received a big update which is still in Beta!

Null checked it out to see if upgrading to it makes sense for us. After a quick evaluation we think the new features are interesting, for sure, but for now we will stick with the version we started out in to avoid introducing unnecessary bugs and hiccups!

Deep Dive: My Character Design Process

This is a more in-depth type post I've wanted to do for a while. But since you seem to enjoy our little behind the scenes stuff a lot I thought I'd finally sit down to write one!

I wanted to show a bit about how I come up with characters and how I approach designing them.

As a porn artist, I like to start the process with something that is very dear to my heart:

There Is A Hole That Needs Filling

Usually the process starts with a need for a character. It could be necessary for the story or for a location I am designing. So I ask myself a series of questions, to nail down what I need:

Even if I only show the tip of the iceberg for a character in the game, fleshing it out a little bit until I can get a sense for them helps me so much with guiding the art and writing later on.

Usually a lot of this happens when Null and I go for a walk and talk about the game. I can kinda let things marinade in my mind and when I plop your butt back down to work the next day, things have already become a bit more concrete and fleshed out!

Setting The Mood

So you have an idea for the kind of person you want to design and the character is starting to take form inside your mind.

Sometimes, at this point, it might be helpful to collect some reference and create a moodboard.

I don't do this for every character, only when I am unsure about the aesthetics and details I want to go for.

In the case of the Chieftain I knew I wanted a mayan/incan touch.

I'm a big Warhammer nerd and some of the Lizardmen creature designs in it also found its way into the design for the chieftain.

I thought a headpiece like this would fit her perfectly, so I went to Google Images to collect some references that I used during my sketches.

For reference and moodboards I use PureRef (https://www.pureref.com/) which you can use to move, resize and crop reference in a big canvas. It's a bit more user-friendly than Photoshop or Clip Studio for this task.

Foreplay

Jim Butcher, one of my favorite authors, wrote some articles on how he approaches character design and one thing that stuck with me was his use of "tags". Some authors fill out a whole bio for every character but he makes a point that it's often a bit overkill. Instead of doing a bio, he likes writing down a collection of tags that describe his characters. It seemed much more creative and less rigid. You can just brainstorm them and see if they sit right with you or not. And you can focus on only the things that are important to your story or game.

A tag could be anything about your character, like their appearance, if they have any identifying items on them like a staff or certain clothes, if they have certain mannerisms, how they talk like if they are sweet or like to use profanity, any habits they might have, their general attitude and stance, and so on. You get the idea.

Just noodling on these tags will already give you some good ideas and the character will start to take shape more and more inside your head.

So for example, for our chieftain some of the tags I came up with were: Dignified, proud, beloved by her people, strict but kind, confident, maybe a little vain, ...

So, how would this manifest in terms of art and animation?

Well, if she is vain, she might be a little proud of her jewelry, so I made her touch the feathers of her head piece as if she wants to draw attention to it. On the surface it looks like a person is touching their hair, but in reality she wants to show off just a little bit. ^w~

With a deeper understanding of the person's character, these mannerisms can start to feel more real and logical.

It's Time To Get Slappin'

After I feel like I have a good enough sense of the character, I go into sketching mode as quick as I can. Otherwise it's tempting to just get stuck in the ideation part of the process.

Sometimes I go straight to pixel art, especially if I have other characters I can use as a base to go off of, like with the kobolds. And sometimes I do traditional sketches so I don't have to worry about the limitations of pixel art and making it look good. It's easier for me if I can go into as much detail as I want first and then figure out how to do a pixel art version of it.

Going Deeper

In the sketching phase I often go into breadth first, before narrowing it down.

For example, with the shaman I went through a bunch of iterations until I finally found a design that we thought fits.

Once you have a palette of options, though, it is time to go deeper and narrow down more and more, reject ideas that aren't good enough or don't fit the character.

Finishing

The final step is probably finally deciding on the final design. It means saying "No" to other good ideas that you like and that would fit!

Art Packs

Null and I took a good chunk of last week to go over our design document to update it and work on a bunch open design issues we still had.

In the Sneak Peek we included a bunch of photos and pictures from our work this week!

MONDAY & TUESDAY

Monday and tuesday we went over our ideas list for abilities we had for Kincaid and decided on a final set of abilities.

We focused on three main areas:

MOVEMENT

A big issue we had was with the movement. We felt like sliding, rolling and then, another ability we need, the dash, would be in conflict or make each other obsolete.

Right now you can pretty much spam dodge roll, which makes balancing and enemy design difficult. So we played around with some ideas for balancing the dodge roll and open up design space for a Dash ability.

The design we came up with, which we will test in a prototype this week is as follows:

Dodge rolling will get "tokens" that need to recharge. We are going to play with the amount, but the idea is that you can dodge roll once or twice and then you have to wait until a token becomes available again after a short cooldown.

We're not yet 100% sure if we are happy with this decisions, that's why Null will figure it out using a prototype.

Dash will also not give you i-Frames, so you can't just dash through an enemy. The dash ability is mostly for dodging certain attacks, projectiles and getting across cliffs.

Double Jump was pushed down in the ability progression we came up with. When we started development, it was one of the first abilities we implemented because we knew for sure that we wanted it in the game.

But in terms of the final game design it makes no sense to get it this early because it opens up way more to the player than a dash or something else would.

So that's movement.

MELEE

Next up is Melee Combat and we had a lot of ideas surrounding this. All viable, and potentially fun, but very different.

So instead we approached the issue from the other side and asked ourselves what's fun about Kincaid right now. And that is a medium to fast speed combat. It certainly feels more like a classic platformer, and less like a more slow and deliberate soulsvania game where the focus is mostly on learning timings and parrying.

The ideas we want to play with here are:

Make the third attack a real combo where you have to get the timing right to do extra damage.

Introduce charged melee attacks.

A charged melee attack can be used as a mini-dash+attack, a bottom slam or an upper cut. Charged melee attacks can also smash certain rocks to open up pathways.

BLASTER

The blaster sits at a very odd place right now. Null made it initially to see how it would feel to be able to shoot. Right now it just stuns and interrupts enemies shortly and opens locked doors.

We let ideas for the blaster marinade and went back and forth on cutting it or finding a place for it.

We could only tell that it feels good and right for the gloves to have a blaster, they just need a job. And a balance.

What we came up with is this:

Kincaid will have glove energy that charges up from melee attacks. The blaster (among some other abilities) can deplete the energy.

That way it is not just an unlimited thing you can spam.

Also there will be three ammo types:

We had some other ideas for the blaster, but they were either too violent for the tone we are aiming for (roasted kobolds?) or they were too puzzly, situational or redundant (for example a bubble shot that would trap enemies in a bubble which would double as a one-use platform!).

WEDNESDAY

After we had the ability progression, our focus went to world design. We knew what Kincaid was going to be able to do fully decked out, so how does it overlay with our world design and the plot?

The first planet Kincaid is going to visit will be the jungle one we are working on right now.

After this the world opens up a little and we want the player to have two planets to choose from and both of them should feel different. You can also mix/match and jump back and forth between planets to make extra use of newly acquired abilities.

THURSDAY & FRIDAY

The remaining days we talked about secondary elements that interface with what we worked on early in the week:

Web Build Bugfixing

Null also worked on fixing bugs in the web version of the latest Patreon build. You can expect an update on that on Tuesday or Wednesday, but looks like the biggest issues have been addressed!

Weekly Sneak Peek - Week 25

Since most of the week was focused on design sessions I thought it would be a fun change of pace to take you behind the scenes and show a bit of how we run things here in our little studio! ^w^

Physical Workspace

This is my desk, littered with sticky notes that we pushed around on the whiteboard to try out different designs for movement and combat as described in the companion roundup! And yes, I use an old shoe box as my tablet stand!

This is Null's initial brainstorming for currency name ideas. We have figured out currency and how it fits into the world we are building now, but he thought there are some cute and silly ideas on there that he wanted to share. His favorite being just "Moo-lah". And the bank's mascot would have been a cow!

Some notes on how swimming might work. We had a bunch of different ideas for swimming, but in the end, we decided to tone it down and make it a more puzzly part of the game. So there won't be any or much upgrades for underwater stuff.

This is a pretty recent brainstorming on the notable village NPCs.

This is a photo of Tuesday's session where we overlayed the ability progression we came up with, with the story flow and big picture world design. I censored some cut ideas and major story spoilers. ^w^

What's going on here...

Digital Workspace

To stay organized we use an app called Dynalist internally. It's basically an outliner that can accomodate any kind of task or workflow that revolves around list making. Null prefers it over Trello and some other things he tried. It is a bit like a mindmap that flows from top to bottom!

This is our design doc which is set up a bit like a kanban board. Fresh ideas are dropped into the top Inbox. We regularly review any ideas we dropped here and either delete them or push them towards more formulated designs. A lot of these have companion folders in Dropbox because that's where Dynalist is weak unfortunately. Open Questions get discussed and added to until we either cut them or flesh them out. Once we feel an idea is solid and has found it's place in the game, it is moved to "Final Design", which is basically what you'd call a traditional design document. From there we plan what art and code needs to be made and add those to our task lists.

This is Null's document that he mostly uses for coding. At the top he has an outline for the rough development plan, a backlog where bug reports, features, improvements and fixes go, followed by a build roadmap and the rest is your standard Kanban setup!

That's it for this week! Next week will be more art heavy again, but we really needed to put our heads together to update the direction of the development!

That means we are already planning the revamp of the jungle area with the final ability progression in mind. Some other villagers we can't show here yet include the village chieftain and her #1 strong warrior, a shaman, a cute couple running a pottery shop, guards and a bunch of regular townfolks who are eager to chat with you!

You might have noticed the lack of female kobolds in this preview. That's because most of the sketches of female kobolds I have so far are still pretty naked. If you want to see them, head over to the Sneak Peek where I can safely show them! ^w~

Gallery Mode

We implemented a gallery mode, one of our top requested features! Sorry it took us so long! ^w^;;;

But with the coming update you will be able to enjoy all unlocked animations and CG sequences. Scenes unlock upon getting grabbed. That means you can watch the scene from the main menu without having to go through it in-game if you want to focus on just playing the game.

There will be a few exceptions to the rule. For example the threesome with the kobolds only unlocks once encountered “in the wild”. The reason for that is that some scenes should stay a secret and figuring out how to unlock them is part of the fun!

Cutescene System

A cute game needs cutescenes! Null has been working on a cutscene system that will be used for story events, narration and dialogues with NPCs!

He wrote a little bit about how it works, again with source code, in the Sneak Peek!


Effects

Also we are adding some visual effects to the kobold village and some other areas, like godrays, falling leaves, particle systems~

Cutescene System

Hi Null here! :3 People really enjoyed last week’s section so I thought I'd showcase coding stuff more regularly!

This week I’ll cover how I implemented the cutscene system.

One thing I missed a lot coming from Unity are coroutines, which were super handy for things like cutscenes, boss patterns, AI, etc.

To emulate coroutines, I wrote a little scripting system inside of GameMaker that can accomplish the same.

A cutscene is made up of events:

An event can basically do whatever it wants, and the cutscene controller will keep calling it until its “done” flag is set to true.

Because the system needs to support jumping and branching, the events are kept in memory until the cutscene finished. That’s also why there is a second “Setup/Reset” event on the object in addition to GameMaker’s standard Create event.

Event types, such as camera shake, walking a character, opening a dialogue box, panning the camera, etc. will inherit this base event and flesh it out with their own implementation.


Most of them are very simple. For example, all the camera shake event does is set the appropriate attribute for the active camera and then set itself to "done".

For the actual scripting language I made short functions that create and setup the events and also add them to the cutscene:


The cutscene controller itself is very simple, too:


Putting it all together it looks like this:

This would loop indefinitely, because the last line jumps back to the beginning.

Result:

And there you have it! It is very simple but we can easily extend it and it is highly flexible! I’m looking forward to using this for all kinds of scripted encounters. :D

Upcoming Sales Tax changes on Patreon

Hey everyone!

I already touched on it in the last weekly roundup, but I thought I would reiterate.

Starting on July 1st (not this coming Monday, but the month after), Patreon will charge sales tax for all applicable pledges. In a lot of situations this means a slight increase for what you have to pay.

"Patreon is at it again, huh?"

To be fair, it is not their fault as it was decided by the government and their hands are forced.

But I understand if this means you can no longer support me or have to lower your pledge.

On June 1st Patreon is going to send out a message of their own with more details.

Thank you for supporting, whether you have to lower your pledge or drop out. It truly means the world to us. Kincaid wouldn't have come this far without you. <3

Again, the change is going into effect on July 1st, so that gives you plenty of time still. That's it for the tax update.

Kobold NPC Process

And last but not least, I made a little pick up animation for a nicer transition in the wolf act!

Kobold Village Hanging Bridge

Hello! Null here with some code stuff for those who are interested! :3c

Under the hood, the bridge is basically just a "half pipe" collider. There are no actual physics going on, other than the regular collision handling the rest of the game already uses. The difference is all in the way the bridge gets drawn.

As you can see, the collision shape dictates the running curve, and the actual segments are each drawn manually!

The next step was to make them actually react properly to Kincaid. Since I'm epic, I nailed it on the first try!

Well... not quite! xD Let's try that again.

That's way nicer! It looks like Kincaid is pulling down the bridge now. But it looks stiff. More like she is running on a rubber band than a wooden hanging bridge.

What it needs from here to look good is: (1) Non-linear easing to and fro her feet, (2) be in a hanging position from the get go and (3) some bounce when you jump off of it!

And that's the final result! Quite nice considering there are no actual physics going on and everything is fake! ;3c

Before we jump into it, I wanted to talk about a few changes we are making to the Patreon posts!

Public Roundups + Patron Sneak Peeks

First of all, I would like to make the weekly roundups publicly available, so people who don't pledge and only follow can see how the game is progressing. For people who do pledge $1 and above, we will publish a second post with more uncensored art previews and in-depth information.

I decided to release all the art packs for the $25+ tiers as posts. I used to send them out manually, but I think it's unfair to let people wait until I get around to it. And in the past we also had a few instances where people didn't receive our message for some reason. That's not a cool experience and something I want to avoid in the future.

Tier Reward Change: Experimental Builds

Going forward, we are going to release Experimental Builds for the $25+ tier and a new Discord channel where these can be discussed will be made available!

These builds are basically unpolished previews of what's coming down the pipeline - warts and all! They might contain content that is going to get cut, weird little quirks and bugs that haven't been fixed and little cheats and tricks Null and I use to test the game (the current one for instance has a quadrupel jump you start with).

We thought this would be a cool way to show our appreciation, give a more behind the scenes view in addition to the dev-streams and open up further conversations and feedback!

Patreon VAT Changes

On a Patreon-related note, please be aware that as of next month Patreon will also be charging sales tax for all tiers of membership in areas that were not affected before (mainly the US). We know this sucks, and we did everything we can on our end to minimize the impact for you, by making sure Patreon knows about all tier rewards that are not affected by sales tax in most states! Village & NPC Progress

Last week I started working on NPCs for the village! My first step was to get a bit of diversity for the body types going.

(Uncensored art can be found in the Weekly Sneak Peek!)

The next step was to make the faces of the bolds more expressive! The current faces worked for enemies, but NPCs need to be more expressive. I struggled with the old approach, so I went back to the drawing board and designed new kobold heads from scratch!

Here's some of the stuff I've come up with so far:

Village Hanging Bridges

Meanwhile Null is implementing the village into the game. I made the background art, and he is going to add a bunch of effects to it to really make it come to life. Things like glowy particles, falling leaves and godrays poking through the tree tops.

Another nice little touch is a hanging bridge that connects the different platforms across the trees the village is built on:

Hi everyone! ^w^

Filling the village with Lust & Life!

Now that the village is finally done, Null and I took a moment to review the approach to the project. While we are very happy with how it turned out, in the future we want to use a more healthy mix of unique setpieces and reusable assets for things like villages, hubs or other areas of interest.

I'm happy with the result, but the project left me quite exhausted ^w^;

With the village done and added to the game, I started working on some NPCs! In a first step I started sketching out some different body types and clothes. Here are some of my sketches!

Wolf Pick-up Animation

Another small thing I started working on is a transition animation between the wolf ripping Kinny's pants off her ass and then sliding her down on his rod. We thought the transition was too abrupt compared to the other animations and the amount of detail I put into it, so here we go!


Finally, here is an impression of a quiet pretty area that is going to lead up to the tree-top village!

Hi everyone!

We're so happy that so many people enjoyed the update we put out last week! ^w^ The threesome animation and the quality of life improvements were overall very well received.

But we also got a lot of bugfixes, which is Null's current main focus! He's been blasting through bug reports and we're going to release another hotfix fairly soon, that should address most of the things that have been brought to our attention!

Once the bugs are fixed, the HTML5 build will be made ready for release, which means the next public demo is due soon!

I'm continuing pounding through my remaining "polish pass" tasks for the village.

Weekly Roundup - Week 15 - I can't think of a title!

Hi everyone! ^w^

Short and sweet update! I caught a flu (no worries, no covid!) and I'm out of commission for 2 or 3 days. But Null is hard at work at getting the new build out. It should drop here very soon! :3

New build coming soon!

Aside from the threesome there are a bunch of new changes we want to "try on for size" and experiment with. Most of them have to do with making the controls feel even tighter and more responsive. Controls are already pretty solid and one of the things where we get the most positive feedback on, but Null saw some room for further improvements! ^w^

Here are some of the changes we would like you to try and give us feedback on how it feels:

The new pack includes the kobold threesome animation, of course. I have also added the firefighter illustration that I'd previously made for charity and some pinups that have been used only in ads thus far. A new reward for this tier is the soundtrack. Weekly Roundup - Week 13 - The Kobold is in the Details!

Hi everybody! It's time for the weekly roundup again!

This week I made a lot of progress on the threesome animation and it is about to come together. All the little sub-animations and transitions have been sketched out and I'm working on coloring and shading everything and adding little secondary animations, like moving hair and other subtle things.

With the next animation I am still a bit unhappy with the left kobold's arm. I wanted to make it look like he is holding his hand behind his head but because of the perspective his arm looks like a stump. -_- I will change it to either have him hold her head or move the arm just to the back. :3

Weekly Roundup - Week 12 - 2 Bolds 1 Girl

Hi everyone! ^w^

Sorry for the late update! The start of the week has been pretty hectic and left me pretty bushed.

Last week I started working on the threesome animation which was a welcome change of pace to the kobold village! ^w^

So here is what I have so far!

"Oh mai~ What's going on over there!?"

When another kobold observes an on-going sex act his interest is piqued! He will come over to observe the fun (and hopefully get invited!)


Scoot, scoot~

Inviting the other kobold over is completely optional! As long as Kinny and the kobold aren't close to climaxing yet, the third partner can join.


Animation Process

For the main animation I just made a little loop of the kobold humping. I focused on getting the fluidity and energy right.

In the second step I added Kincaid's lower body and figured out how the energy of his thrusts would translate over to her body. Again I focused on the most important parts of her body while also adding a few more body parts to the kobold.

Once I was happy with how the thrust translates over to her, I added the third partner. I wanted to make it so the thrust of the first kobold would push her over and the second kobold would meet Kincaid's movement and thrust into her just as she was leaning into him.

These initial steps take a lot of experimentation, trial and error, but I think it's worth the time investment. If I take my time refining until I have the dynamics I want at this early stage it always results in a very nice final animation for me and the process of coloring and rendering is downhill from there. ^w^



I really liked the dynamic I had going on now, so I started putting in colors and refining the outline of the body to lay the groundwork for her ass jiggling as the force of the thrust rolls over her body.

We also got a whiteboard for our little home studio to help us brainstorm and map stuff out! Traditionally, the first thing that was drawn on it was a big dick, of course. ^w~

First of all, slot B won by a landslide! A whopping 72% thought this should be the way Kinny is going to have fun with two bolds at the same time!

Animating this will be a nice change of pace from my current main project of the kobold village! ^w^

My main focus right now is working on the kobold village. Since it will be an important part of the game, I wanted to take my time and make it something special, so most of the art will actually be unique set pieces and not use many generic tiles.

One of the most requested things we have had is that a second kobold can join in on the fun, and that is one of the next things we are going to implement!

It will be an optional thing. Our plan right now is to present the player with an option to invite the other kobold in on the fun, instead of forcing it on the player.

The position will be up for poll in a few days!

Hotfix

While I was working on all the new art, Null worked on fixing a bunch of bugs that people have been reporting. We are still not all the way through the list, but we got some of the most annoying and game-breaking ones out of the way and just released a hotfix! Grab it, while it is still uh... hot. ^w^

Cover Art Shenanigans

I've also fiddled a bit with cover art compositions for the game but I decided to shelve that for now and just focus on making a logo and going with in-game graphics! I shall revisit the idea of cover art once the cast of characters is more fleshed out.

I am happy to announce that newest build of Kincaid is out! ^w^

What's New

Even though there is no new lewd content, there is still a lot of new things to discover! I made two new tilesets and redid the whole starting area. The whole area spans the size of the temple.

There is a new piece of music, which is playing in the illustrated game over screens. A bunch of new sounds have been added, including some environmental sound effects and sounds for the slime enemy. The wolf enemy will be voiced next!

We also fixed the controller issues! So you can finally play again with a controller. ^-^

Aside from that there have been a bunch of bug fixes and tweaks. Going forward we will try to be more organized so we can have a proper changelog. ^^;

While Null is playtesting and squashing bugs I decided to throw in another new animation for the game: Ladders.

Originally we wanted to use placeholder jump-thru platforms but since I finished the background art (including a whole new parallax background for the jungle!) ahead of schedule, I thought I'd just get started on this. It's a good excuse to draw some nicely shaped pixel butt! ^w^

Weekly Roundup - Week 4 - Finishing touches!

Hi everyone! ^-^

Short update today! We are putting the finishing touches on the next build. Since most of the work revolves around level design and decorating the levels there is not much to show to you this week. If you look at the last two weeks, that is pretty much still what the process looks like, just a bit more refined.

It still feels a bit samey compared to the temple, in terms of game mechanics, but that will change once we introduce other types of kobold fighters and new enemy types.

But this update focuses mostly on new tilesets, decorations and level design.

Weekly Roundup - Week 3 - More jungle progress!

Hi everyone!

I'm still knee deep into building out the new starting area. I have decided on a final map layout, blocked out all the rooms and connected them and now I'm doing a lot of playtesting and decorating the rooms I am happy with!

The old starting area was just a handful of rooms before you got to enter the jungle. The new area is much bigger and comparable to the temple itself, in size!

Nothing lewd going on just *yet*, sorry. ^w~ But we need a pretty environment for frame the pixel lovings and adventuring!

Weekly Roundup - Week 2 - More jungle overhaul progress!

More work being done on the jungle background overhaul!

I'm wrapping up all the sketches I made, tossing stuff I don't want and refining the pieces that will make it into the game.

I'm also preparing everything by moving the finished pieces from the mockup (basically a fake screenshot I have been working on) onto something called a sprite sheet to make it ready for the engine.

I do a rough outline of the new starting area and make a plan on how everything will connect:

And then slowly build up the rooms inside the engine like this:

This is just me testing out the auto-tiling in concert with the decorations and decals and experimenting with what goes well together, etc! ^w^

It was really exciting to see everything coming together! And the new workflow is much faster than the previous one, where I had to manually choose the right edges, corners, etc. when building the levels!

Weekly Roundup - Week 1 - Welcome to the jungle

Hi everyone! Welcome to the first weekly roundup of the year! ^w^

This week I continued fleshing out and overhauling background art for the jungle! The starting area before the temple is still kind of a placeholder.

It doesn't quite have the jungle-feel to it that we envisioned. We'd like to be able to add a few tighter and more claustrophobic areas, too, and play with switching between a thick jungle feel and more open areas and glades.


Another thing I want to improve on is the actual usability of the tilesets. GameMaker has a feature called auto-tile where you can basically pick a brush, say "Cave" and then paint cave, and the engine picks the right edges and corners for you. This will improve the speed in which we can create levels. Here is an early video of it in action:

So that's what I'm working on right now! I also want to make a lot more decorative elements so the jungle will be as pretty as the temple! ^w^

Weekly Roundup - Week 51 - Revisiting the kobolds!

With the wolf out of the door I moved my focus back to the jungle areas - and the kobolds!

As I mentioned in an earlier post, the next game system we want to tackle is the dialogue system, and NPCs.

Deep within the jungle Kincaid is going to find a friendly kobold village!

So right now I am revamping and expanding on the jungle tileset quite a bit, as well as working on concepts for what that village might look like!

Weekly Roundup - Week 50 - Christmas is coming!

We're moving fast towards Christmas! Things are slowing a bit down and we are taking a step back, looking at how far we have come and mapping out plans for 2020 and the next quarter.

But that doesn't mean development has stopped! Null is refactoring the messier parts of the code as well as fixing bugs so we have a nice foundation to kick the next year off of! I am touching up tiles and fixing little things that annoy me, giving the animations and backgrounds a little extra polish here and there!

I still managed to finish a nice illustration for you, which I attached to this post: A nice festive wallpaper of Kinny's smoochable butt! Feel free to stare at it as much as you like! ^w^

AWOOOOO~ It's finally here! ^-^

The wolf has been a big project for me and I am happy to finally unleash him on you guys!


A Big, Juicy Package

The wolf sprite has a total of 444 frames of animation (100 frames for combat and 344 for sex act), 8 high-resolution CG illustrations and 10 high-res overlays for the CG sequence (cutouts of her face, the woof and internal shots). The encounter story that comes with it has 1260 words for the script!

The world itself has not grown or changed much, since we are reaching the point where we are going to restructure the world soon anyway.


Auto-Save & Continue

The game now autosaves at the various checkpoints within the game. It is still unclear where they exactly are, but we tried to space them out in a fair manner. With the next update we will introduce proper save spots in the game.

You can continue where you left off if you choose "Continue" from the main menu!

Weekly Roundup - Week 47 - Fire Exclamation mark Fire Exclamation mark

The wolf is going to have a ranged attack, too. He will howl and summon a ring of flames that will follow him around, ready to be hauled at Kincaid!

Here's how I animated it:

First I sketched out some rough ideas of what the attack flame could look like:

Then I made a guide (the white and black lines) for me to figure out how the flame should move.

I painted the fire around the guide and tried to animate each tongue of fire how I thought would make sense.

With the core loop of the ranged attack done, I also needed a "spawn" and a "hit" effect for it.

And this is how it all looks together:

When everything is done I will make a bigger post going into the details of this enemy. Needless to say the woofer has been quite a big project, but I’m really happy with how everything is coming together.

The next enemy, whatever it will be, will most definitely not be this involved.

But I’m still happy I decided to give him the amount of work that I did!

I completely forgot to post an update last week!

Work is still being done on the wolf. I also took a day to sketch some potential threesome ideas for the kobold encounter. Threesomes are still one of the most requested features and I had some ideas I wanted to get out on paper. Stream chat joined in on the fun and gave me some more ideas too!

While I'm working on the pixel art assets for the wolf, bunny put together an interim build featuring the first song of the Kincaid OST as well as a whole bunch of new sound effects, including sounds for the kobold act!

Thanks to your overwhelming support we were able to hire Moon Mink, a professional audio studio focusing on adult games. Moon Mink will be taking care of all things music and sounds for Kincaid!

Work on the wolf CG is wrapped up! I will be sending out the art pack to our $25+ patrons tomorrow!

I really like how they turned out. Because of the perspective and the subject matter (knotting~) I decided to work with callouts for their faces as well as an internal shot of Kincaid getting filled to the brim!

Next up is pixeling those in-game animations~

Kincaid Build 2019.08

Hello! ^-^

The new build is here! The temple area is expanded once again to make use of the new mechanics we are introducing: Wall cling and hand blaster. There is also a new enemy (flyer) and lots of smaller changes and tweaks.

We postponed the release a bit, hoping we could get the new sounds and music in, but they still need some tweaking, so we decided to release the build now and do another update next month once the sound has been polished to a level we feel good about!

Let us know how the game feels, especially close quarter combat and shooting.

We are not 100% sold yet on the idea of having a ranged weapon, so it might even get cut!

Right now the blaster does no damage except to the flyers, but can be used to stun enemies.

We don't have a map yet, so make sure to keep your eyes open for changes. If you get stuck, hop on Discord or shoot me a message for a hint!

Sorry for missing last week's post! Null got really sick and I was also a bit under the weather.

For the next build we are doing another expansion of the temple. It is starting to feel like a real metroidvania with backtracking and unlocking paths, etc.!

The coming build will not include any of the new sex stuff. Making those animations takes a lot of effort, so it will be a little while before the wolf makes his debut in the game!

It has been a busy week here at the cookie bakery!

The most exciting thing first: We will be posting a poll for the next enemy this week! I am currently touching up some rough concepts I made:

Kobold Variations

To make the first area of the game a bit more interesting, I thought about the idea of having a few variations of attack patterns for the kobold, too. They will not receive a separate sex act, though. ^^;

I also worked on a concept for a flying enemy:

This one will be like the wall critter and will not get a sex act.

And lastly, since we are slowly approaching the point where most of Kincaid's base abilities have been implemented, at least as a first draft, I started working on the next phase of development, which will be designing systems for NPC dialogs and quests. Here is a rough sketch of a style I'm playing with for the character cutouts:

With my work on the slime done I shifted focus back to more explorative work. I've done a bunch of sketches for new enemy ideas based on my own likes and what people in the community suggested:

Hello adventurers! ^w^

After data loss and finding out my backup system hasn't been working for a while I managed to wrap up work on the sprites for the slime enemy.

Luckily I could use some of the Picarto recordings to recreate most of the work I had lost. -_-~*

We've now gotten a business account for Dropbox and threw all our asset work in there, alongside our Git system for the code.

The slime sprite has 82 frames for the normal gameplay animations and a whopping 182 frames for the sex act.

For reference, the kobold sex animation consists of only 82 frames altogether!

I needed all those frames to give the gooey texture and jiggliness the detail it deserves! I really hope you're all going to like the little raspberry boyfriend. ^-^

On the coding side of things, Null wrapped up most work on the new melee combat system. We can give actors a bunch of hit boxes and hurt boxes now. Also running into an enemy does not automatically hurt you anymore, unless they are actively attacking you. We think this is going to make melee combat more fair and more fun. Also attacks now can have freeze frames, which makes fighting feel much more satisfying. ^w^

Going forward, Null will write the AI for the slime and making him come to life and I'll focus on sketching out more concepts for new enemies and areas.

Hey everybody! ^w^

This one is going to be short and sweet!

Last week we wrapped up the new build with the new movements. Most of the week was spent fixing bugs, making the rooms and testing them! Other than that I'm hard at work finishing up the animations for the new enemy.

It's quite a big one: The sex animation alone has 114 frames as of now, spread across 7 animation stages, and there are still two stages missing (orgasm and aftermath). Oh boy! xD As a quick comparison, the kobold act has 82 frames altogether.

I'm giving my best to finishing up the animation, but as always, no promises on when it will be ready. :3

No WIPs this week, as I'd rather show you guys the whole animation in a big reveal when it's ready! ^w^

I'm happy to present you the newest build of Kincaid, exclusive to patrons!

Before I dive into the build and what the focus is, let me just get it out there: The slime is not in it yet! But no worries, I will be releasing a second build later this month, which will have the new sex content. ^w^

This build is focused on new moves Kincaid can do to navigate the world and evade enemies. We introduced double jump, dodge rolling, ducking and sliding.

Ducking is pretty self explanatory. Dodge rolling and sliding evades enemies and projectiles, but it does not protect you from environmental hazards like spike traps. So be careful where you roll that big juicy tushy!

In the final game, these abilities might be unlockables that you don't have from the start.

In order to play the new rooms, choose "Temple of Trials" from the main menu. The old levels are still there and have been changed slightly to address some issues players were having with them.

The Temple of Trials is a set of rooms that will test your skills in using the new abilities and exploring some level design concepts for them.

And just to reiterate: This is not the way we will be presenting levels in the final game. While the game is still in development and we're playing around with different ideas and concepts, we will be making rooms specific for each version for you guys to try things out.

Once Kincaid's abilities and the way you get them are decided upon, we will move to production and create the actual game world her.

After seeing how people like the new moves and squashing any bugs surrounding it, we will tackle the combat system next. Right now combat is very simple. For the new combat we will introduce combo attacks, dedicated air attacks and experiment with (charged) ranged attacks.

Hello everyone!

This post was supposed to go out on Monday. Unfortunately we had to take our cat to the hospital which kind of threw our schedule around a bit, so here we are! Tuesday evening!

The past week I've been focused on making the next CG, which will be for the slime enemy you saw last time.

Here are some sneak peeks for what's to come:

The CG sequence will have 4 main stages, each with a bunch of different faces to go along with Kincaid's gooey adventure!

While I was drawing this, Null worked on cleaning up our code base and putting in the art I've been working on during the previous week.

Once this is all wrapped up we should be good to go with the next Patreon build!

Release Schedule

Null and I were also debating whether we should follow a monthly release schedule or a more haphazard approach of only releasing a new build once there is really something substantial there to show.

We chose to go with a monthly model for now, as it gives Patrons something to look forward to each month, even if each individual build might not be as voluminous as one might be if we worked on for two months.

If we can't keep up the quality on this model we will switch to a different release model.

Now that the launch phase is over and things have calmed down, we are settling into a steady production schedule.

Here are some of the things I've been working on since the launch:

More Kincaid Moves

Ducking and standing up:

Turning around

This is just a cosmetic variation to add some flavor to changing directions, so we don't just flip her sprite instantly.

Combo Attack

This will replace the melee attack we have right now, which was just a placeholder.

Ranged Attack

We are not 100% sure if this will make it in the game, but we will play with it during the next few builds to see how it feels.

Kincaid is now 100% less grumpy!

Redid her face for her idle animation to better match her attitude in all the other animations. Now she doesn't look bored anymore when you don't move her! ^w^

New Enemies

This enemy is still in the early conception phase. Not exactly sure yet what his final design will be!

Slime

To close off the week I started working on the CG for the slime blob encounter. It's still very rough, but it might be interesting for those who are interested in my art process:

How to unlock the temple!

Unless you see the room above, you will not have finished the demo.

There is a way to get into the temple. ;3

Hint: Go into the cave in the ground. You'll find a hidden switch there that has the same color as a Kobold's cute bubble butt!

I’m happy to announce that the first tech demo of The Adventures of Kincaid is ready for you guys to play!

I really hope that you’ll enjoy it as much as we enjoyed working on it.

This first build encompasses two main areas: A small outdoor section that serves as a tutorial and the temple ruins.

Thank you to everyone who has already been supporting us before we even had our first demo available! ^w^

Soon, Nullbunny will chime in here with a post regarding our development process and where we are planning to go from here. The next demo will focus more on Kincaid’s maneuverability and combat system.

Controls

You can play the game with a controller or a keyboard. Keyboard controls are: Arrow keys for movement and A/S for jump and attack.

Fullscreen mode: Alt+Enter
