My wife has been dealing with a lot of emotional stuff lately and she really liked the rough black and white art I've been experimenting with, so she asked me to draw a few doodles for her. <3

Here are a few things I did last month while I was sick from the flu. The last one is from bursting blood vessels in my eyes from coughing/throwing up too hard, and I wanted to show people how wild it looked without taking an actual picture of myself, haha. They're completely healed now, though!

I've always really loved spooky looking art styles/subject matter but had a lot of anxiety about squicking out my audience by making such things, especially because I've gained such a reputation for making cutesy stuff! It's so therapeutic to draw like this, so there will be a lot more of these sorts of style experiments in the future.

Hi everyone! I hope y'all are having a wonderful New Year / New Year's Eve!

As 2019 comes to an end, I've spent a lot of time reflecting on myself and my art. My art has stagnated a lot. I didn't open commissions even once this year, beyond taking a few on a whim when people had asked for them.

In 2020, I plan on doing better with keeping a schedule for myself, actually opening for commissions, and giving myself more time to make personal art! To give myself room for these things and more, I am starting the year fresh with as few art responsibilities as possible. Here are the changes I am making to my tiers:

All custom reward tiers are going away.

These have acted as a sort of guaranteed monthly commission slots for a while now, and while I may bring these back in the future, I need to take a break from them and open commissions separately.

Worldbuilding tiers no longer guarantee anything specific each month.

I will still be posting various pieces of art here on Patreon relatively frequently! However, since I plan on mostly doing commissions for income for a while, I don't want to have additional art obligations beyond those for now.

Because worldbuilding tiers no longer specifically fund worldbuilding, I will be renaming/rebranding them.

Pledges will offer a discount on commissions from my friend, L James!

L James is an incredible vector artist and a good friend of mine. As part of my 2020 Patreon revamp, all pledges on this Patreon page will offer a 2% discount per $1 pledged (up to 20% at $10 pledged) on L's commissions! This will exclude experimental pieces and flat price specials.

When you commission them, let them know you're pledging to my Patreon page, how much you're pledging, and what your name is on here if it's different than the one you're contacting them with. I can then confirm this information with L, which will clear you for your discount!

Hi everyone!

For those of you who are in my Discord server, this isn't new; however, I've been putting off making an actual post about this for way too long, so I'm making myself just type it out.

For the start of the new year, I'm going to be removing all tiers that reward custom art, and worldbuilding tiers will be going away as well. I cannot guarantee when, or if, these tiers will ever be back. All of the custom reward tiers have already been unpublished, and by the time January rolls around, I will be deleting them entirely.

Why?

When I first started getting overwhelmed with making custom Patreon rewards, I thought that reducing my workload would keep me from getting too anxious. It definitely helped me, but even with less work to do, upcoming Patreon rewards continued to give me a sense of dread. Honestly? I'm just trying to work through depression, and clearing out all of my art responsibilities is the best thing I can do for myself right now. I create more when I have that weight off my shoulders, and I want to feel completely free to explore my creativity more.

Will you be okay?

Mentally? Yes. Financially? Also yes. My wife has a good job and she is supportive of my decision to cut down on Patreon tiers that bring me so much stress. We are okay! I also plan on opening for commissions again next year, and I would like to get into making merchandise such as stickers.

What tiers will you have after you get rid of the custom reward/worldbuilding tiers?

The tip jar ($2 tier) will absolutely remain, since I'll still be uploading art here. My friend L James and I are also planning on collaborating by having my Patreon tiers give discounts on their commissions. I really want to help promote their art and we thought that this might be a good way to help each other out! I'll be making a post with more details on that later this month. Beyond those, I'm not entirely sure what other tiers I'll have available in January. We'll see!

Hi everyone! For November, I'm bundling some personal art into my custom tier art post, since a lot of my free time is funded by y'all anyways!

November was a pretty good month! I spent a lot of time doing small experimental pieces that took me longer than average, but were overall very valuable practice pieces for me. I am trying very hard to be patient with myself. While I am generally producing art slower than I was before, I've made more things this month because I've been in a slightly better mental state and haven't been getting frustrated with myself so easily.

I spent some extra time on Morghus' tier reward, since his birthday lands in November! Happy birthday, my friend!! Meg and Rath'Tolar also requested that I spend the time they funded on anything I'd like, so I combined their time (and some worldbuilding time) into a sketch of my wife and I as malaika. <3

Along with the canids I posted earlier in November, and the two extra personal sketches I included here, I also worked on several other pieces on personal time that can't be posted on this Patreon page due to them being 18+; they've either already been posted in my discord server, or will see the light of day elsewhere another time!

I've also already talked about this with my patrons in Discord, but December will be the last month for custom rewards, and worldbuilding tiers will either be going away or being reworked. I plan on making a bigger post that'll explain my reasoning behind it all, but the gist of it is that depression sucks!!! and I need to give myself room to get better by clearing out my art responsibilities for a while. <3

Hi friends! This is getting posted a day late because my wife and I ended up being out pretty late on Halloween. c:

Most of my personal art time during October involved working on my fursuit! I didn't get it done quite in time for Halloween, but I'll be sure to post more pictures when it's completely finished.

It has been amazing practice, but next time I will definitely be getting some sort of better quality faux fur rather than using minky fabric for the entire thing. It's double-sided and incredibly difficult to work with, and I think it'd look/feel a lot better to use something else! Either way, I'm happy with it so far and I'm excited to have it finished. c:

Hi friends, happy Halloween!

This month there are only a few custom rewards due to a wrist injury that happened a couple of weeks ago. When I talked about this in my Patreon discord chat, several people opted to put their Patreon money into me resting my wrist instead - thank you so much for that! It's a lot better than it was before, but unfortunately drawing is one of the things that seems to irritate my wrist the most, so I've been doing my best to avoid it. I did get a few rewards done, but they're rougher and took longer to complete as a result.

Hi everyone, happy September! I have a few different worldbuilding things for you this month. c:

The lineup of malaika in the first image was commissioned by my friend Rath'Tolar, so that was entirely funded by him! The characters seen there are: Mocha, "Rath'laika" (both belonging to Rath'Tolar), Audrea (me!), my wife's currently unnamed character, and Otulissa (belonging to Agua).

The next several sketches are funded by worldbuilding patrons! Thank you all for being patient with me the last few months; I'm trying to get into the flow of drawing more in general.

The first one is a few ponderances for how desert-dwelling malaika faces will be shaped. Desert malaika are much smaller than the other currently established subspecies, and I'd like them to have face shapes that reflect that. They have huge ears that have fur on the inside to prevent dust and sand from getting into their ear canals; most of the other subspecies do not have inner ear fluff! Their horns are also inspired by antelopes; I'm currently unsure on whether I'll have them always spiral or not.

The symmetry sketches on the next page show a lot of extra face, horn, and ear shapes. These are ponderances for both jungle and desert malaika; I still need to think a lot about which features will generally be separated out into either group. The malaika here also all have "cat eye" pupils rather than rounded ones, which may be specific to jungle and desert malaika. We'll see!

The last sketch is my current idea for what coastal malaika body shapes would be like. My plans for coastal malaika features include webbed toes, albatross/cormorant-inspired wings, a wedge-shaped face, and small ears. They'll also probably have short, waterproof fur and a flatter tail for swimming.

Hi everyone, I hope you had a great August! Here are all the custom rewards for August. Credits for the characters etc. are in the captions on each image.

None of these beyond the $100 reward are colored due to how much time they took, but I'm super happy with how these sketches are turning out now! The changes in tier pricing/expectations make it so I get to spend more time on making these look nice and aesthetically pleasing. I feel like, at least for now, I am in a really good place with these rewards. We'll see how I end up feeling about them after trying this for a few months!

For Worldbuilders: The worldbuilding post is delayed again this month due to my UCTD (basically the same as lupus) flaring up for half of the entire month. I usually plan on setting aside a slow week for such things, but this month has been the worst I've experienced for years. I can hope this doesn't keep happening, but it's entirely unpredictable and there isn't really anything I can do beyond trying to take care of myself and wait out flares. In the meantime, I've made a channel entirely dedicated to my worldbuilding in my Discord server, so hopefully that can hold people over until I can get some actual malaika-related art posted! A commission for Simpl1/Rath'Tolar that I finally completed after working on this on and off for a few months! I'm super happy with how this turned out and I'm looking forward to making similar reference sheets for my own characters when I have the time. c:

This month, the vast majority of my patrons contributed their pledges to my partner's new reference sheet, so as a result, there are very few custom rewards this time around! The reference sheet will be being posted soon. <3

It also looks like I can now add multiple images to image posts all at once! This means all images should appear at the top of the post and it also saves me a LOT of time posting things to Patreon. Hooray!

The custom rewards this month are two experimental $50 tier portraits for Mikish (gifted to Googlefluff) and Almonihah (featuring his character, Brennus)! The two sketches are from the new $30 tier, for Tempest (featuring his character, Derecho) and for Kyreeth.

I'm trying some things to make my sketches look a little more interesting! These are a bit cleaner and also have a gradient laid over them, rather than being a solid grey like most of my sketches have been recently.

Hi everyone! This month's (and last month's) worldbuilding tiers were mostly dedicated to personal work that weren't technically related to headworld things. I've been doing my best to find new styles and techniques that feel better for me, so you'll get to see quite a bit of style variation here!

Here's some portraits I did in a stream last month to practice some quick, rendered coloring! These were originally being made to test out possible new Patreon rewards, but they took too long to make them worthwhile for the upcoming tier in July. The new tier's portraits will be a bit less rendered than this.

Here's a somewhat worldbuilding-related sketch that I had started as a gift for my partner of our malaika characters being affectionate! <3 I'm hoping to return to this one at some point soon.

Since June is Pride Month, I wanted to make myself a Pride icon! I'm still figuring out the gender thing, but I'm pretty firm about demisexual representing me. I included the pansexual flag, because I don't mind the gender of whoever I end up falling in love with, but demisexual definitely takes precedent over it. (I also prefer the look of the flags being separate over the panromantic demisexual flag.)

I was overall disappointed with how this one turned out, but it's a good example of the sorts of styles I've been trying to work on. Taking time to experiment is valuable, even if the results aren't always something you're happy with!

Because I was unhappy with how that one turned out, I made another one. This one is closer to my current drawing style, but I experimented more with coloring. I'm much, much happier with this one!

I wanted to practice more with canine noses, especially since I've been drawing the above cutie recently. Canine noses are still really tough for me, but here are some studies I did! Sketches are numbered for the order in which I drew them.

Hi everyone! This is a huge wall of text, but please take the time to read through it if you can, especially if you're a patron in any of the custom reward tier slots.

Thank you all for being patient with me recently. I know I haven't put a lot of art on Patreon lately beyond just posting the custom rewards at the end of each month. Between a bad mental health streak and some very strong art block (probably caused by the former), I haven't been getting very much art done.

If you're in my Discord server, you've probably seen me mention this several times, but I haven't made an official post on it until now. I would like to work towards changing the current custom reward tier system! This has been a long time coming, but I've been struggling to figure out exactly what I'm going to do. Here are a few reasons why I want to change things:

• Custom reward tiers don't pay enough for the amount of time they take. The $10 and $20 tiers are roughest for me when it comes to time spent vs. money earned. (Please note that I currently charge $30 an hour for regular commissions, and that's even lower than I'd like my prices to be; I'm slowly working my way up to $40 an hour.)

• Not only do these pay less than if they were regular commissions, but Patreon also takes out an additional fee, which means I get even less than if I were to get that money directly through PayPal.

• Cropping, resizing, signing, and uploading every custom reward takes hours at the end of each month, and this is if I only upload them to Patreon. This time does not include any mistakes I sometimes need to fix in the art itself, additional sizes/crops sent to individuals who request them, or uploading them to any other websites. This is why you often don't see me uploading them anywhere else.

• The custom reward tiers were never initially meant to be a one-to-one value on time spent / money earned. The goal was that the art I made for these tiers would take maybe half the time the tier is worth, and the quick doodles would be a "thank you!" for people who were willing to dedicate more money to me each month. The rest of the money in the tier would have gone towards free time, to reduce the stress caused by doing a lot of paid work.

• These tiers were also originally meant to reward experimental art, but I currently don't feel that they allow enough time for me to experiment.

• I feel so crunched on time, that I also frequently find myself "wasting" time on looking up references and studying. I feel very strongly about how important it is to always use references, but I've been falling out of that habit recently because of the stress of trying to reduce the amount of overtime I often spend on these rewards.

• Even when I manage to finish sketches within the time limit I set for myself (usually only with simpler dragon designs), I often feel like the quality of the art is lower than I want it to be. I desperately want to improve and make better things, but I feel like my art has stagnated.

All in all, because of frequent overtime, just about every bit of Patreon money I get across all tiers ends up going into custom rewards. I want to go back to the idea that this page was meant to fund personal work and study time, not just a way of offering cheap monthly commissions.

I currently don't have solid plans on what exactly to do with the tiers. I feel like I've dug myself into a hole with how many people are going to be possibly disappointed by the changes I'm considering making.

For more than a year now, I've tried to experiment and get faster at these sketches ($10 and $20 custom reward tiers specifically) so that I wouldn't end up needing to change anything. I was hoping that I could brute force my way into getting quick enough for these tiers to be worth it for me, and that all the practice I'd get from making these drawings each month would also result in higher quality rewards for my patrons. I overestimated myself, and trying so hard to make these work month after month has worn away at me.

I am now to the point where I dread working on my Patreon rewards every month. I feel guilty working on any personal work because I know that I should instead be spending that time on custom tier rewards. My turnaround time for commissions has suffered, and I haven't opened my commissions to the public since sometime last year. On top of all this, I've hardly uploaded anything to my Patreon feed, which means everyone in non-custom tiers have not been getting their money's worth. I need to make some sort of change.

Here is what I'm pondering so far. These are major changes because I don't want to continuously make small adjustments to tiers; I'd rather find something that works and stick with it for a significant amount of time, if possible. Please keep in mind that none of these changes are final, but these are things I'm strongly considering:

$10 custom reward tier (currently known as Silver Tier):

Unfortunately, I don't think I can keep offering custom rewards for this tier. Maybe in the future I'd be able to offer sending people stickers or postcards for a similarly priced tier. Until then, custom sketches at this price point don't pay enough, don't give me room for improvement, and don't offer enough time for experimenting.

$20 custom reward tier (currently known as Gold Tier):

Ideally this tier will have it's price, reward, and slot limit changed. My current plan is to increase the cost of this reward to $30, and offer sketch portraits that are higher quality than what the $10 tier currently offers. Portraits at this price point will give me more room to improve and experiment with style, and overall give me the extra time to add more life and personality to these characters' faces! I'm not entirely sure on what I'll make the new slot limit, but I will probably bump it down to 4 or 6.

$50 custom reward tier (currently known as Amethyst Tier):

This tier currently offers flat-colored, full-body sketches (or colored, rendered portraits), and is still relatively new, but I've had enough time to experiment with it to know that I still manage to go overtime pretty consistently. I plan to change this tier to what the $20 tier used to be; full-body, uncolored sketches. This will have the same goal as changes to the previous tier are meant to accomplish: to give myself more time to improve, experiment, and to make sketches that I'm happier with without the constant worry of going overtime. I think this price point can stay the same if I'm only offering sketches; we'll see if I'll need to increase the price in the future.

$100 custom reward tier (currently known as Emerald Tier):

The $100 tier is currently filled and capped at a single patron, so this is definitely the easiest tier to work with right now! My plan is to continue doing experimental pieces for this tier until I can settle on something I'm confident with doing each month. This tier will probably end up offering refined colored sketches or rendered portraits of some sort.

Any tiers labeled for worldbuilding:

While these tiers suggest that the pledges will go towards both worldbuilding and personal work, I will be changing the wording on them to stress that these tiers are primarily for personal work and do not necessarily guarantee specific worldbuilding art. Some months I just want to draw random critters or studies and I'm not feeling very creative in regard to my fluffy dragons' world.

The overall goal for these changes is to aim my Patreon back towards its original intent: to alleviate financial stress, give myself time to make art that isn't only work for other people, and give patrons the opportunity to fund free time/study time if they enjoy what I do.

When will these changes happen?

These changes will start happening next month (June). I will be unpublishing the Silver and Gold tiers immediately so I don't get any additional patrons in those slots, and everybody in those tiers currently will be able to stay and still get their June rewards after their payments process at the beginning of the month. After their payments process on the 1st of June (sometimes it takes a few extra days) and I have their tier rewards in my queue, I will ask all Silver and Gold patrons to either stop pledging or move their pledge to a different tier. Don't worry about removing your pledge immediately if you still want a reward for June! I will send you all messages when it's safe to stop pledging.

I will be introducing the potential new $30(?) tier after the 1st of July, and then people will be able to move into that tier if they'd like. When the new tier is published, I will @ my patrons in my Discord server and make a post here to be sure people know about it.

I know this might make some people a little sad that their custom rewards are going away, but it's important for my mental and physical health that I bite the bullet and go ahead with making these changes. Less stress from custom Patreon rewards will mean more improvement, experimentation, and overall more content in general from me. You are all amazing and I appreciate your support. I am unable to keep up with current custom rewards due to several reasons. Silver and Gold tiers are going away and will be replaced by a new tier. This month, I focused heavily on character design, particularly for this gal here:

She's my partner's new (redesigned) malaika character! She currently doesn't have a name, but you'll definitely be seeing a lot more of her in the future.

The last row, third face is my friend, Edritch, turned into a malaika for fun! I think his character suits the species very well. :>

When I got my wisdom teeth out, I started playing a lot of Guild Wars 2 again. It's been years since I'd played it, and while I really enjoyed the game back then, it's been more enjoyable than ever for me recently!

Yesterday they announced a new mount they're adding to the game, and it's a dragon! They're called Skyscales, and I love them so much, I couldn't help but draw one right away. I appreciate their unique, short faces. <3

Good morning, patrons!

For those of you who aren't in my Discord server and don't keep up with my Twitter, I got all four of my wisdom teeth removed on March 6th. I wasn't planning on doing much art for the first few days of recovery anyways, but now it's been a week and I'm currently dealing with so much pain that it's unbearable. I have an appointment later today to see if anything went wrong and to see if they can help me with pain management at all, but I've been dreadfully unproductive as a result. We also had a ridiculous blizzard happen all day yesterday, so I'm dreading the idea of possibly not making it to that appointment due to being snowed in. ;;

Yesterday I opened up very quick Ko-fi commissions in my discord server as a way to be productive with low-stress doodles. I got about half of them done before I needed to take a break for a while, but I've been loving working on them and they should all be posted here on Patreon later today!

Hi everyone! This month's worldbuilding didn't focus on anything particularly special, but I do have various sketches for you. :>

Here are a few sketches for practicing anatomy! The stretching one in particular was great for interesting positions and angles that I don't normally draw.

Here are a male and female malaika who have a bit more weight on them than I've usually drawn in the past. I want these critters to be very diverse, and that includes all sorts of body shapes, too! I'll be drawing various shapes and sizes of them more often in the future, too.

Here are some rough sketches that focus on interesting angles and simplified wings! In the past, I've often drawn malaika without their wings, or I've put off drawing malaika entirely just to avoid the tediousness of all those feathers. With a little practice, I'm starting to find a style of "quick" wings that I really enjoy drawing, though!

And finally, here are some... flower fruits? that grassland malaika eat as part of their diet. They grow on trees, but I'm unsure what the trees themselves will look like yet. Malaika are omnivorous and eat all kinds of things, but since they're not technically Earth creatures, I have a lot of designing to do when it comes to various foods.

Every month, after all my patrons' payments go through, I'll send out messages to all my limited-tier patrons asking for what they'd like for me to draw. This month, Patreon is taking much longer to process payments, so I have yet to send any messages out (as of writing this, I still have 6 payments that have yet to go through, and only one of those is actually showing up as declined).

Hey everyone, happy February 1st!

I've edited several reward tiers and added a few extra ones! Here's a summary of what's changed:

Worldbuilding has been separated out into its own tiers. This way, people in the custom reward tiers won't have to message me each month on whether or not they want to fund worldbuilding. I also made the $5 tier into a worldbuilding tier, so those of you who pledge $5 each month will be credited in my worldbuilding posts! This (and all the other headworld-related tiers) will also grant the "World Builder" role in my Discord server. Neat!

The $10 worldbuilding tier will give you access to headworld-related polls, which will help me gauge what sort of content people would like to see the most!

There currently is no difference between the $10 and $20 worldbuilding tiers other than the amount you'd be giving; I was hoping to allow people in the $20 tier to vote twice on polls, but apparently that isn't a feature on Patreon yet (heck). If anyone has any ideas on how to make this tier special, without me offering anything too time-consuming, let me know!

I've also added two new higher level tiers which offer custom rewards. One of them is a $50 tier, which will allow someone to choose between either a roughly colored full-body piece OR a more rendered, speedpainty sort of portrait! What I offer for this tier may end up changing in the future; we'll see how it works out for a couple of months first. :>

The other new tier I added is a $100 tier! This tier will give someone an experimental speedpaint, featuring a character of their choice hanging out in a little slice of environment, possibly quite similar to this piece:

This tier is limited to only one person for now, since this is a bit more of an undertaking than my other tiers!

Also! One last note, since somebody had asked about this specifically:

If you'd like to pledge towards a custom tier and also put some money towards worldbuilding art, you can do so by just pledging a bit extra! For example, if you're getting a portrait sketch for $10 each month, but also want to put $5 towards worldbuilding, just edit your pledge to be $15. As long as you stay within the custom tier, any extra money you pledge will allow you to be credited in my worldbuilding posts. I'll try to always catch when someone is pledging extra so I can credit them, but if you want to do this, please send me a message to be extra sure I saw it!

Hi everyone! This month's worldbuilding pledges funded some really fun experimental work this month, including the piece shown above! (More art below, be sure to click the post!)

The banner above was a great learning experience in a lot of aspects; I tried out a new coloring style, experimented with digital oil brushes, figured out some techniques for making quick (and still reasonable looking!) environments, and learned some new Photoshop magic tricks! I'd really like to make more of these... maybe a future commission option?

Similar to last month's worldbuilding art, I also made a reference showing some different types of fur that malaika can have:

Malaika fur is very diverse, and while being completely hairless is incredibly rare, I still enjoy drawing them for the sake of reference. :>

I also focused some worldbuilding time on this cutie:

This is a tundra malaika! They're usually bigger, bulkier, and fluffier than their grassland-dwelling counterparts (who have been the focus of my worldbuilding art up until now.) They generally have shorter necks and tails, a rounder torso, and their wings are inspired by owls, while grassland malaika wings are typically inspired by vultures and condors.

Hi everyone! I hope you're all having a happy New Year! (More art below, be sure to click the post!)

I've been having so much fun with this! This month is more worldbuilding specific to the malaika themselves; I've been spending a lot of time looking at other creatures to help inspire further design choices and for figuring out how their anatomy should work. The biggest influences I've been focusing on are listed in the notes pictured above. In an effort to help myself with drawing expressions, I've also spent some time this month studying how human faces work. Even though humans and malaika have vastly different facial structures, you'd be surprised at how much that helped! :>

The skull concept was the toughest for me, and made me realize how valuable it would be for me to do studies of various types of skulls. I'll have to do more of this at some point.

Oh yeah, I've also added little dewclaw toes to their hind feet! They previously only had 4 digits on their feet, but I think they look better with that little toe there.

Of course, everything here is subject to change. As I spend more time thinking a lot about these critters, I may change some of their features. I think a lot of their body structure is mostly set in stone now, though!

I hope you're all having a great December so far! I just wanted to update everyone on some thoughts and plans I have for my Patreon and general art things.

1.) In January, I'll be raising my commission prices from $25 an hour to $30 an hour. My goal is to slowly work my way up to $40 an hour.

• As a result, I'll be changing the wording on Silver and Gold tier rewards to be something along the lines of "quick experimental work or sketches" rather than "an hour/half-hour worth of work." This way, I can continue doing these rewards for you without raising the tier prices or significantly undercharging myself. I'll continue giving you similar rewards to what you've been getting, without locking myself into a specific time frame for each reward.

2.) I'll be making changes to both my Patreon and the types of commissions I offer.

• Changes to Patreon will involve fun things like: Adding new tiers, adding new goals and rewards, creating art for each tier's pledge info, adding a "Thank you for pledging" image, making new banner art, editing the description on my main page and adding new art to it, etc.
• As for commission types, I'd like to move a little bit away from vignettes and more towards art that has backgrounds, a focus on framing, and fun little things like symmetry portraits.

3.) Worldbuilding things!

• This month, I gave silver and gold tier patrons the option to fund worldbuilding things rather than have me draw one of their characters. This ended up being a lot more popular than I expected! As a result, I'll probably be making separate pledge tiers that are dedicated specifically to funding headworld development (more pondering on that below). You guys are amazing, thank you! <3

4.) Personal illustrations?

• Another thing I'd like to dedicate time to is making illustrations! I have so many ideas for beautiful scenes I'd like to create. I've been slowly getting better at making environments, but I want to make myself dedicate a significant amount of time to practicing and creating illustrations that aren't limited to commission work.
• These may or may not be related to worldbuilding, so I don't know if something like this would be included in future worldbuilding pledge tiers. Maybe the worldbuilding tiers could also include various personal art? I'm not sure how I'll go about doing this yet. Here's an example of an illustration I've been working on:

Commission I finished earlier today for Tyrion! Really love how this one turned out; My process for these has been slightly different recently, and it feels like it's going in the right direction!

I struggled a bit with proportions in this and I've definitely learned that having this many characters in a scene, even if they're not directly interacting with each other, is a pretty good challenge! I did my best to make my drawing style a bit more simplistic this time around so I didn't go too overboard. Overall, I'm happy with how it turned out and I've learned some things that will be valuable for future projects. c:

Hey there Patrons!

My account was finally granted the charge-up-front option! I've immediately enabled it, so from now on, new Patrons will always be charged as soon as they pledge and again on the 1st of each month afterwards.

Having charge-up-front means less worries about people stealing content, so I'll be reviewing what my current tiers offer and possibly be adding to them or editing them soon. I'll keep you guys updated!

Hi everyone, happy June!

I'm going to be making a few changes to my Patreon, the first being this: I'm removing any previous adult content I've posted, and from here on out, this will be a safe-for-work Patreon page. I'm doing this because I currently very rarely draw adult work. If I ever find myself drawing more of it, I may just post it on FA or share it within my Discord. We'll see whenever that time comes around!

A change that may be incoming but takes some more pondering before I put it into effect: I'd like to add some smaller tiers for people who would like to just donate a dollar or two and still want to see content. I was waiting on getting charge-up-front before I implemented this, however, I'm feeling a bit reluctant to wait any longer since I have absolutely no idea when I'll be granted that feature. I'm still unsure what sort of rewards to put in each tier, so this is just a tentative warning that changes to tiers may be happening soon!

I'm also working on making a schedule for myself so I will actually be posting more. Last month was an especially slow month for making art, and I don't want that to continue happening if I can help it. Thank you all, as always, for your support and for being patient with me. Hey everyone, apologies for the lack of polls for a while now! I've had a lot of difficulty thinking of things to make polls for.

I'd love to make an adoptable of some sort, because it's not something I've done before and is also a good excuse to do some character design.

I'm staying a bit within my comfort zone by sticking with non-humanoid dragons this time around. We're gonna keep the poll options pretty loose so I have a lot of freedom to mess around with the design. Let's see how this goes!

Just for clarity, the "raptor" dragon option means that it'll stand with two legs and have two arms. It may or may not have wings.

Hey everyone! I just wanted to show what I've been spending most of my Patron-paid time on this month: a 3D dragon in Blender! Check out more pictures below for the progress from start to current.

Started with some really simple concept art:

Feet:

Body with the feet attached; didn't keep the "thumb" on the hind feet:

Started making wings but was unhappy with them:

Deleted the wings and started working on the head:

Added inside of mouth, teeth, tongue, eyes, and earfins:

I forgot to use my timer during one of my work sessions on this one, but I think this took about 4 to 4 1/2 hours total. Still getting used to coloring style, but I'm enjoying how these turn out, especially for how little time they take!

I have several things in my queue currently, and here's one of the pieces in it that I'm working on! This rough sketch is for my buddy Meg, featuring their character Omid and his cat, Capper. :> This will be a loosely-rendered vignette when it's finished, similar to the one I did for ferrety-lixciaa recently.

I always appreciate the opportunity to draw character interactions like this; they're more challenging and tend to have a lot more emotion in them, and they're incredibly rewarding to bring to life! :3

Commission for Theeda, who asked if I could finish coloring the sketch that Raven gifted her for his February pledge reward. I'm so glad I had the opportunity to do this! I appreciate more practice with quicker coloring styles, and I'm really happy with how it turned out, especially for how long it took me to complete. c:

The total time from start to finish (not including the sketch) was 3.5 hours. I'll definitely be doing more of these in this style to try to cut that time down!

Hey there, everyone!

I had meant to write an official post about this earlier, but I've at least talked to several of you in Discord about this already. Starting in February, 10 dollar pledge rewards will no longer offer high resolution art rewards, and will instead offer a very quick portrait sketch! Here's my reasons for this:

• My large files take up a lot of space and I can't attach them directly through messages without a Dropbox link (or something like it). Unfortunately, I have very quickly run out of Dropbox space.

• I don't feel comfortable attaching my full-resolution files to regular posts because of bots stealing my content.

• I have almost never had 10 dollar patrons. People seem to appreciate custom rewards a lot, and my regular uploads for my artwork are reasonably high resolutions anyways. I think both myself and my patrons will be happier with this option!

Also beginning in February, early access uploads are being moved to the 5 dollar tier. The 1 dollar tier will still be used as a tip jar and will grant access to voting and discord rewards, but consolidating all of the basic art rewards into one place makes it easier and also less confusing for me. Since a lot of my "finished" work remains as a sketch, I sometimes have a hard time knowing whether to upload it as an early access upload or a WIP, but keeping them both within one tier will streamline things for me a lot. Luckily this will not affect any of you currently, since all of my patrons are either in the 5 dollar tier or 20 dollar tier (except for one of you, hehe)!

I was originally going to do all of these on my iPad, but got my new computer set up earlier than I expected to, so I decided to use these as an excuse to learn Photoshop CC 2018 instead! It's mostly familiar, but there's a lot of small new things and all of my brushes act entirely different than they did in CS6, so it's still quite a learning process for me. Hey there, Patrons! Thanks so much for being patient with my lack of posts in the last couple weeks. <3

After nearly a year of going through troubleshooting hell with my old computer, I ordered a prebuilt desktop from Dell when they were having some pretty good sales at the end of November. The shipment was delayed for an entire month, so I was concerned I'd never get it, but it actually did arrive and I'm really happy with it so far!

This is also my first piece of art beyond a few doodles that I've drawn in Photoshop CC. :> It has a lot of cool new features that CS6 doesn't have, so I figured I'd try it out now that I have a video card that can handle GPU acceleration.

Some male malaika faces! They tend to have pudgier noses than the ladies, and their horns have prongs on them.

I think this took around 20 hours in total, but unfortunately I had forgotten to turn on my stopwatch app multiple times during the process, so it wasn't timed super reliably.

More progress on this commission for Morghus! Working on the environment now. c: The grass is only roughly blotched in right now to get an idea of the colors I want, but I have a lot more refining to do.

The lighting is still very rough, but now you can kinda get an idea of what I'm going for, at least! The rimlighting around a lot of the edges is a little bit too pronounced right now, so I'll be fixing that soon.

I can definitely see several aspects of these that need improvement, but this was good practice and I learned a lot. c:

Morghus ordered this as an experimental commission, so I'm using it as another excuse to practice backgrounds. :> Not only that, but he also provided some of his own photos for reference, which is AMAZING and something I really appreciate!

The background so far is incredibly rough, only loosely painted on to get an idea of the sort of palette I'll be working with and something that'll give me a constant reminder of where the light source is. The plan is to have Khyaber's shape visible as a shadow through Morghus' wing membrane, since he'll have most of his wing illuminated from subsurface scattering. We'll see how well I can pull this off! It'll be a great lighting exercise, for sure :>

Here's another WIP for the commission I'm working on for Morghus! Since the last post, I colored the lines darker so that they're easily visible on both characters, and I've added the base color for both of them. Next up, I'll be putting all their markings on!

Shown below: Something I do to help me spot gaps between the lines and color layer (or to spot any color leaking outside the lines) is to make the base color something very bright. I usually go with oranges, pinks, or reds.

Hi everyone! I just wanted to update you guys on something big that's happening in my life: I'm moving!

I'm flying Duke down here to spend Christmas with my family and I. He'll be here for a week to help me pack my things and ship them (because I don't have enough stuff to make a U-Haul rental worth it), and then we'll both be flying back to Colorado together on December 30th!

I'm really excited and I know I'll be a lot happier there (and as a result, much more productive). :> Commissions in December and January will be either closed or very limited while I work on moving.

Regarding commissions, since I'll have a few more financial responsibilities starting in January, at the beginning of the new year I'll be raising my prices from $20 an hour to $25 an hour. This probably won't actually change things too much since I've been getting a lot faster at arting anyways, but I figured it's worth letting y'all know!

Also, Patreon rewards are getting done soon! I've just been trying to clear out my current commission queue before getting to work on them. Thanks for being patient with me!

Working on my part of a trade with Royalty! I thought I posted this here yesterday but I must have been too tired and closed the tab before I posted it, whoops. x_x

I wasn't originally planning on putting a background on this, but I thought it would be a good opportunity for practice. :>

I finished my reference sheet! It's not the most organized ref, so someday I'll definitely have to revisit it to make it a bit nicer, but it serves it's purpose for anybody who wants to draw her, at least!

Sketch commission for SylphCo on DeviantArt! I ended up adding a little bit of my own time to turn it into a flat color sketch for some practice.

Adding flat color takes a bit more time because I need a cleaner sketch to make it look okay, but I think it turned out alright! I've had several people ask if I offer flat color commissions, so this might be a commission option soon. :>

It's done! It ended up taking a total of 14 hours. I've gotten so much faster than I used to be and I'm so hyped about it! ALSO, the malaika lady's name is now Mocha. c:

ONWARD TO MAKE MORE ART!

A little sneak peak of something that should be finished later today! I'd really like to move away from making a lot of vignettes and more towards making actual illustrations with backgrounds, even if the backgrounds are relatively simple at first.

I'm really thankful for people funding experimental works like this! I have so many things that I'd like to do with my art, but often feel like I'm a little stuck with my current styles. I know it's riskier for clients to spend money on things like this, too, since they don't know exactly what they'll be getting.

I'd normally take time in between paid art to work out new commission types to offer, but when someone actually funds one directly, it means I get to make it a priority. They're not only funding a huge learning experience for me, but they're helping me make more affordable commissions available for future clients! c:

This month, I’d really like to delve into learning how to draw backgrounds. Backgrounds have been my biggest struggle when it comes to art for as long as I can remember, but I think that‘s mostly because I simply do not take enough time to study and practice them. I’ve wanted to put more effort into actually learning the basics for a while now, but I just haven’t felt like I’ve had the time or energy, and I feel pretty overwhelmed every time I sit down and actually make myself attempt a study (which, unfortunately, doesn’t happen often).

Speedpaint portrait commission for a friend and his boyfriend! I had some concerns in the beginning that I wasn't going to be able to make the tiger's markings turn out right, but I actually really like the result!

This took about 7 hours, which was a biiit overtime, but I learned some things that'll help me be faster next time I do something like this. c:

Here's the 3rd out of 4 total speedpaints for this month's Gold Tier Patrons! This one is for Simpl1, and it took a little bit longer because I went a little bit out of my usual comfort zone with dramatic lighting. I'm super glad I did, because I really enjoy the... depth, I guess? of this piece. I feel like I'm really getting somewhere with these! :>

I'm thinking about changing the $20 dollar Patron reward into an experimental tier. So, instead of only doing only sketch portraits, I use you guys as way to experiment with quick art. Sometimes it might be sketches, sometimes it might be speedpaints, maybe it'd be just portraits or full-body pieces; really anything I can get done between a 1-2 hour timeframe.

Sketches are nice but I feel like the sketch portraits are now done quickly enough to where I could probably give y'all a bit more value. With this, you might not know exactly what you're getting beyond the character you specifically want me to draw, though. Would this be okay with you? Let me know!

Hey guys! I had a rough few days so decided to work on some personal art while I broke my way out of feeling down. Duke and I spent some time playing with character creation in Elite: Dangerous, and I felt inspired to draw a cute ferret in one of the outfits that's available!

Hey everyone! I'm home again after being in Colorado since early August. I was supposed to be home on September 19th, but my flight was overbooked and I got to stay a few extra days. I'm going to take a nap and then get to work on all the $20 reward portraits that need to be done before the end of the month, plus the creature design thing y'all voted on in the most recent poll. I haven't forgotten about that maned wolf lady I was working on in August either, so I'll try to make time for her, too!

Being home again is rough, but I have my workspace here and I'm feeling more determined than ever to save money so I can feel secure enough to move out. Things are looking up!

Today (or I guess technically yesterday, since it's just past 2am here now, whoops!) I did a sketch commission for Simpl1! After seeing the scaly wyvern I drew the other day, Simpl1 wanted to see how I drew scales on Rath'Tolar. This took about 3 and a half hours, and I'm really happy with how it turned out!

I think his face may be ever so slightly asymmetrical, so I'm going to try to fix that when I have time. Thanks for looking, and thanks to Simpl1 for the commission!

More practice! This time I was focusing on paws, legs, and drawing angles I'm not very experienced with drawing. I think the areas that need the most work here are probably the foreshortening (especially on the torso) and I need a bit more practice with drawing where the front legs meet the chest. Other than that, I'm pretty happy with how this sketch turned out!

Today I drew a wyvern while my partner worked on college stuff. I really like how the shape of this guy turned out, and I enjoyed using it as an excuse to practice scales!

Since the first pledges have now been processed, this month I'll be getting to work on the sketch portraits for my $20 patrons. I also plan on finishing up that maned wolf lady within the next week, since I'll be flying out to Colorado on the 8th and I'll be there until September 19th, during which I won't have access to my computer.

This character is one of my favorite dragons in my Flight Rising lair, Alkonost! I didn't draw any of her apparel this time, but maybe I'll try something more complicated in the future.

Starting to work on the coloring/lighting! Still pretty rough so far, though.

I've been working on that pinup again! Today I spent a lot of time looking at references, especially for hands, paws, and legs. I really like how she's looking so far!

First adult post on Patreon, whee!

This was an experimental commission in the sense that I wanted it to be faster than usual but still reasonably rendered. It still took quite a while because of all that fur, but it's a bit more simplistic than usual in regards to certain details, like the feathers on the wings and the general lighting. In the end, I ended up shaving off several hours by using a fur brush instead of rendering it all by hand. It was a good learning experience, for sure!

The characters featured are both unnamed Malaika, a species I made ages ago that I haven't done much with yet. The male is meant to have similar markings to Simpl1's character, Rath'Tolar, though!
