Mallow General Hospital is a public hospital located in Mallow, County Cork, Ireland.[1] It is managed by the Irish Government's Health Service Executive and provides acute-care hospital services for a population of approximately 90,000 in County Cork.[2] In 2008, the hospital served 10,979 out-patients, and 4,413 in-patients, with an average stay of 5.9 nights. 74.9% of admissions were made via the accident and emergency department. In 2007, 40,114 patients presented to the emergency department. The hospital saw 2,336 day cases in the same year.[1]

2010 investigation

In August 2010, the Irish Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) announced it was to begin an investigation of potential health risks to patients attending the hospital. The inquiry, which was brought about due to patient complaints, will focus on major surgery, emergency and critical care services.[6]
