List of bowlers who have taken 300 or more wickets in ODI cricket
Taking 300 or more wickets across a playing career is considered a significant achievement in One Day International (ODI) matches.[3] The feat, first achieved by Pakistani fast bowler Wasim Akram in October 1996,[4] has only been achieved by twelve cricketers in the history of the game as of 2013.[2] Akram was also the first player to reach 400 and 500 wicket feats.[3][5] Three Pakistani players have taken 300 or more wickets, along with three Sri Lankans, two Australians, two Indians, one New Zealander and one South African player. Bangladesh, England, the West Indies and Zimbabwe are yet to see a player breach the 300 mark.[2]
As of March 2013, Sri Lankan bowler Muttiah Muralitharan has the highest aggregate with 534 wickets, and also achieved 10 five-wicket hauls.[2] Australian Glenn McGrath has the best bowling average amongst players to achieve the milestone, taking 381 wickets per 22.02 runs.[6] Brett Lee—another Australian cricketer— was the fastest to accomplish the feat, taking 171 ODIs to do so.[7] South African fast bowler Shaun Pollock is the most economical with 3.67 runs per over where as Lee has the best strike rate of 29.4 balls per wicket.[2] Amongst the players, Chaminda Vaas has the best bowling figures, eight wickets for 19 runs against Zimbabwe in 2001, which is the only occasion in the history of ODI cricket where a bowler took eight wickets in a match.[8] Waqar Younis took 13 five-wicket hauls which are the most by any bowler.[2] Sanath Jayasuriya and Shahid Afridi are the only players to have scored more than 8,000 runs in the format.[9][10]
