Kent Innovation High

Kent Innovation High opened in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 2011 [1] with one hundred freshmen, four facilitators, and supporting administration. Based on the "New Tech model" [2] which originated in Napa, California, Kent Innovation uses project (and problem) based learning to encourage inquiry and inspire creativity.

In 2012–2013, Kent Innovation added approximately another 100 freshmen and 4 facilitators. This pattern will continue through 2014–2015 when the school reaches the maximum of around 400 students, 9–12. Students describe the environment as a "family" and that there is very little bullying.

Kent ISD and their Superintendents have opened an exciting New Tech High School, Kent Innovation High, that is very different from traditional high schools. With a focus on project-based learning and collaboration with both students and teachers, Kent Innovation High will demonstrate some of the best thinking in the country about teaching and learning. Success for all students is a driving goal of this "lab" school, which will serve as a learning laboratory for teachers and administrators who want to innovate back in their own schools.

From the glass walls and integrated presence of technology, to the ongoing teamwork of students and just-in-time facilitated learning, the physical and cultural environment will be designed to:

Innovation High is open to visitors - from prospective students and parents, to area educators, to business and community members.

The school was created to not only be a place for students to learn, but also for educators all across the region to see some of the best teaching and learning practices in action. Our Superintendents intend the school to serve as an "education incubator" where visiting educators experience exciting new teaching methods, take those ideas and implement them in their own schools.
