Yulia Spiridonova

Yulia Spiridonova (Russian: Юлия Дмитриевна Спиридонова; born 1986 in Moscow, Russia) is a Russian photographer and contemporary artist. Calvert Journal included her in the list of ten rising stars at the Moscow Biennale for Young Art 2016.[1]

Education

Yulia Spiridonova earned her humanities degree from Moscow State University and her graduate degree in Photography from Massachusetts College of Art and Design, where she was the teaching assistant to Nicholas Nixon.[2] She also studied at the Yale University School of Art as a visiting student.[3]

Art

Yulia Spiridonova participated in a number of exhibitions in Russia, United States, Germany, and the Netherlands.[4][5] In 2016 her project "Parallel News" was selected to participate in Moscow International Biennale for Young Art.[6] Her provocative imagery received mixed critical response in Russia, where one of her artworks, which exposed sex of a gay couple with physical disabilities, was called by critics an 'autoerotic disorder'.[7]

Career

Yulia Spiridonova works for Esquire in Moscow, Russia. As a contributing photographer she made series of portraits of notable Russians, including political artist Petr Pavlensky.[8]
