North Toronto Christian School (NTCS) is a non-semestered Christian school located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

History

Founded in 1981, it is the largest independent Christian school in Ontario and one of the largest in Canada.

North Toronto Christian School is a co-educational Christian elementary and high school, not affiliated with any specific church or denomination. The Bible is used as an integral part of the school curriculum and all matters of counselling, discipline, and school life are governed by a commitment to Biblical principles and values.

North Toronto Christian School is a member of the Association of Christian Schools International.

NTCS originally occupied the former Page Public School building, which was closed as an operating school by the North York Board of Education (later Toronto District School Board) in 1981. Its first lease was for five years and was terminated on July 31, 2011. The Page Avenue property was sold to a private owner.[2] Formerly called The Yorkland School, the high school adopted the elementary school's name, North Toronto Christian School, during a merger between the two schools at the beginning of the 2011/2012 school year.[3]

International Student Program

North Toronto Christian School offers a limited amount of space for international students. NTCS has a comprehensive ESL program at the high school level to assist students with their English. The school also has a home-stay program for international students; they can learn English and Canadian culture in this program. All home-stay families are carefully selected by the school.

Property

North Toronto Christian School is situated on a 5-acre (20,000 m2) campus at the intersection of Highway 401 and Highway 404 in the heart of Metro Toronto. It occupies a former commercial office building and sports complex with a total of 80,000 square feet (7,400 m2) of space on two floors.

In 2010-2011, the building was renovated and expanded in order to accommodate elementary school students and staff. The elementary school building, which was rented from the Toronto District School Board, was demolished in 2011, as the property was sold by the TDSB to a property developer.

Daily schedule

The school day at North Toronto Christian School begins at 8:45 am. The high school day ends at 3:05 pm, while the elementary school day ends at 3:15 pm. Uniforms are required. Chapel is held every other Wednesday.

Extracurricular activities

North Toronto Christian School has a wide variety of clubs and teams that students may choose from. Sports teams include volleyball, soccer, basketball, swimming and many more. These sports teams are available to both the junior grades and the senior grades. The school highly encourages the involvement of its student body in community service. The Service and Leadership Team (SaLT) is a primary example of this mission. This team is in charge of heading activities such as collecting items for the local food bank, collecting shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child, and participating in 30 Hour Famine. Throughout the year, this team organizes impromptu fundraising events for disaster relief. Other clubs include The SchoolReach team which is a trivia based club, DECA, and other business related teams.

Chandos Outdoor Education Centre

Chandos Outdoor Education Centre is a camp property owned and operated by North Toronto Christian School. Twice a year, students from grades 3 - 9 take an overnight trip there. Each class, accompanied by teachers and parents, goes once in the fall and once in the winter. These trips provide students with opportunities to explore nature, learn new skills, and develop closer relationships with their peers. ++

Chandos Outdoor Education Centre is located outside of Apsley, Ontario, and is about a two-hour bus drive from the school. The 275-acre property contains open fields, wetlands, thick forests, hiking trails, and a beach on Lake Chandos—a variety of unique environments from which to study God's creation. Chandos trips focus on allowing students to enjoy the outdoors in the company of their classmates. Swimming, canoeing, hiking, sledding, and snowshoeing are just some of the activities that students participate in during the trips.
