William Sydney Christie (1863 – 1922) was an Australian public servant who served as Serjeant-at-Arms of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly.[1]
Early life
He was born in 1863[2] at St Peters, New South Wales, and was the son of William and Ellen Christie. Christie was educated at Newington College, commencing in 1875 during the headmastership of Dr Michael Howe,[3] and on leaving school at 17 years of age spent some time in rural pursuits with his father, who was a pastoralist and surveyor.
Public service
Christie entered the office of the Chief Secretary on 14 October 1885 and joined the staff of the NSW Parliament in 1886. In 1888 he became a clerk of the Legislative Assembly and in 1909 he rose to Serjeant-at-Arms and held that position until 1918.[4] He served as a member of the NSW Totalisator Commission and toured nationally and internationally in that role.[5]
Family
On his death in 1922[6] at Ashfield, New South Wales, he was survived by a widow, Elizabeth,[7] a son, Frederick Christie of Berrima, and a daughter, Mrs G (Elizabeth) Abbott of Ashfield.[8]
