Westfield Carousel

Westfield Carousel is an Australian shopping centre in the Perth suburb of Cannington. It is located approximately 12 kilometres from Perth on the Albany Highway, and approximately 600 metres from Cannington station. After its redevelopment in 1999, it became the largest shopping centre in Western Australia.^[1][2]

History and development

Carousel Shopping Centre was built in 1972, and originally contained 58 shops, a hotel, two takeaway food shops, as well as Woolworths supermarket, Boans (later acquired by Myer), Aherns (later acquired by David Jones) and Walsh's.

It incorporated the site of Boans Waverley Waverley, a standalone (and the first suburban) Boans branch, which opened in 1959. It also later incorporated the Waverley Hotel which stood on the corner of Albany Highway and Cecil Road (now Avenue). In 1996, it was purchased by the Westfield Group.^[3]

1987 or 1988-1989

On 1989 A 2 floored Myer Department store was opened along with a lane of specialty fashion retailers including Live. This development must of been a success as Westfield Carousel's Myer was the third Myer in Western Australia.

Early 1990's

In the early 1990's the second level was extended with 2 new stores and a Hoyts Cinema complex. These 3 new second level stores were a HOYTS Cinemas which includes IMAX, Arcade Centre which is now iPlay and a ice cream parlour which is Glenare

1998-1999

On 1988 a huge development began as it would make the shopping complex twice as it was before and will mark Western Australia's Biggest Shopping Centre. This huge development included a Kmart Australia, Coles Supermarket, Rebel Sport, Lincraft, Harris Scarfe, Red Dot Stores, a Al Fresco dining area with 4 dining retailers as one of them is a bar/tarven and extending the Myer fashion line with some more specialty shops these include Health Shops, Cafes and mini Discount Shops. Some mini major stores were added to the older parts of the complex such as Red Dot Stores and Best & Less. This is so far the biggest development in Westfield Carousel.

2000's Changes

In the 2000's changes happened. The Harris Scarfe area was refurbished between 2007-2009. In the early 2000's Lincraft was closed and was replaced with Good Life. In around 2002 and 2003 Harris Scarfe was closed and replaced with JB-Hi-Fi. In the late 2000's Red Dot Stores closed. Things started to get worse for those years.

2015 and Beyond

In 2015 Rebel Sport was moved not far away from it's original and had its latest look. Also in 2015 Hoyts Cinemas was refurbished with a new iPlay arcade next to the cinema. In June 2016 Red Dot Stores reopened located next to Radio Rentals. Best & Less was also refurbished in 2015 or 2016. The food court is also in a major refurbishment and will be completed before Christmas 2016 according to Westfield Carousel's website. Parking was also upgraded in July 2016.

Westfield has planned to do a $250 million development with around 2 or 3 Floors and a possible apartment block as most of WA's shopping centre developments will have apartment blocks. The most likely chance is a new 2 floored David Jones Limited and a extended Hoyts will be in the new development. Construction will start around Late 2017 or so and will be completed in 2019 at the earliest.

Transport

The centre is located approximately 600 metres walking distance from the Cannington Interchange. Multiple bus services connect to the shopping centre from the interchange, as well as additional bus services running to and from the city along Albany Highway.

As at October 2015, Westfield Carousel had 293 shops, 82,464 m² of floor area and 4,300 car spaces.^[4]
