"We Don't Talk Anymore" is a song produced and performed by American singer Charlie Puth from his debut studio album Nine Track Mind (2016). It features guest vocals from Selena Gomez; who co-wrote the track with Jacob Kasher and Puth; the latter also served as a producer. The song was released on May 24, 2016,[1] as the third single from the album. It is a tropical house song with dance influences.

The song peaked at number nine on the US Billboard Hot 100, earning Puth his second top ten single and Gomez her sixth. It has also attained top ten positions in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain, and reached number one in Italy and Lebanon.

Background

Charlie Puth created the guitar line during a trip in Japan. He produced the beat in the Philippines and recorded his vocals in Los Angeles.[2] Months later Puth played the song for Selena Gomez,[3] whom he had met previously at an after party following the MTV Video Music Awards.[4] He thought their voices would complement each other well[4] and then asked her to sing the second verse. Gomez's vocals were recorded in Puth's closet.[5] Her recording session lasted approximately 15 minutes.[6] On December 10, 2015, Puth posted a snippet of the song announcing the collaboration with Gomez.[7] On January 10, 2016, Puth posted a second teaser.[6]

Composition

"We Don't Talk Anymore", a tropical house song with dance influences,[8][9] uses a breezy tropical house beat. The song is in the key of C minor and has 100 beats per minute.[8][10] Bobby Oliver of NJ.com described it as "a pulsing club jam".[11] Lyrically, Puth said the song is about "relationships where you’re obsessed with that one person, but then you break it up peacefully, but it’s changed. You can’t talk to them like friends anymore. You can say you want to remain friends, but it’s easier said than done. It’s heartbreaking. ‘We Don’t Talk Anymore’ is basically the conversation a month after that type of breakup."[4]

Critical reception

Writing for Spin, Brennan Carley found the song "wisely trades verses between the two pop forces, cashing in on the trop-house trend" and added that it is "a worthy, breezy slice of pop".[12] Bobby Oliver of NJ.com wrote the song is "wonderfully infectious, and feels destined for hit radio."[11] MTV's Madline Roth praised the singers' vocals saying they "blend so beautifully together".[10] Marie Sherman of Fuse said the song is "freaking catchy" and that the chorus would be stuck in people's heads.[8] Lindsey Sullivan of Billboard called the song "ridiculously catchy".[13] Idolator's Mike Wass opined that the song "sounds like a smash".[14] Dee Lockett of Vulture.com deemed it "the chillest breakup duet".[15]

Music video

The music video premiered on August 2, 2016 on BuzzFeed and was directed by Phil Pinto, featuring Mirella Cardoso as the lead actress. Gomez was unavailable to perform in the video due to her busy schedule on the Revival Tour.

Live performances

Puth and Gomez performed together for the first time in Anaheim, California for Gomez's Revival Tour. Puth later uploaded an official video of it.[16]
