To promote Vettaikaaran, the Chennai-based Chitra theatre had a jungle set to welcome audiences. After much deliberation, they also managed to get a caged tiger inside the theatre premises.[6] The film ran for 25 weeks in theatres and became a box office success. Film historian Randor Guy praised the "interesting storyline, romantic sequences between M.G.R. and Savithri, and super hit songs."[7]
