She was head of medical genetics at the MRC Human Genetics Unit in Edinburgh and the president of The Genetics Society.[4][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14]

Education

van Heyningen studied Natural Sciences (genetics) at the University of Cambridge, and at Northwestern University. She went to study for a DPhil[15] at the University of Oxford in early gene mapping studies using somatic cell hybrids, with Walter Bodmer.[16][17]

Awards and honours

She was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2010 Birthday Honours.[18]
