Urban division

Prince Albert Urban Schools

When the merger between urban and Rural School Divisions in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, happened there were some changes made to both divisions to make things homogenized. Before the merger there were two junior highs and only one public high school. After the merger an extra high school was created to control traffic and provide a geographically friendly design. Before the merger the only high school was situated on only one part of the city making educational equity hard for those who live in the far western part of the city. With the merger a high school was for the first time, right in the neighborhood for residents who live in the west. There was also the opening of PACI (previously a junior high) as a high school, which has a perfectly central location. This new system has made school more accessible for some who might have found attending difficult in the first place. Also with the rural school being open on the west, there was a new tool for community workers.

Due to the separate school divisions communication was difficult between institutions who resided in the same neighborhood. These schools are located in a neighborhood that ranges drastically from low living standards, to normal living standards. With the homogenization of these institutions which find themselves surrounded by some of the same social problems, and the transfer of these schools from normal institutions to community based institutions, the workers of these communities can create a web of support, and deal with matters with a newfound urgency that was lacking before. This is one of the strengths of having a larger school division. There is a larger base of power and decision makers to help smooth out the imperfections.

Below is an arrangement of categories representing the urban school division before the merger. The merger between the two divisions created the Saskatchewan Rivers School Division #119.
