The University of Paris-Saclay (French: Université Paris-Saclay) is a French federal research university which is currently under development and aims to be a world top-10 university. The project is part of the research-intensive and business cluster Paris-Saclay, located near Paris in the Plateau de Saclay.[4][5] The University of Paris-Saclay is expected to be the training and research center of the Paris-Saclay technology cluster, similar to Stanford University in the Silicon Valley and the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology in Israel.

The University's first academic year started in September 2015.[6]

Mission

According to Dominique Vernay, chairman of the foundation developing Paris-Saclay, the university aims at a top-10 slot in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) compiled by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, but "the first goal is to be the top university in continental Europe".[5] The university wants to maximise the economic and business potential of its research, partly via university and research spin-offs, but also by working closely with established companies.[7]

Ranking

University of Paris-Saclay is still under its integrative process, therefore not yet appearing in any of the international rankings. However, in an independent simulation of the Academic Ranking of World Universities made in 2014, the university scored 39.8 (or 43.2 if all Research Organizations are counted, see bellow for more details), ranking the university in the 27th position (resp. 21st).[8] On October 19, 2016, the executive director of the “Shanghai Ranking”,[9] responsible for the annual update and new development of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (aka “Shanghai Ranking”) visited the cluster of Université Paris-Saclay.

In future, University of Paris-Saclay cluster could help France to secure a space amongst the elite Top-10 universities of the world and would help to bring the education and research system of France into lime light.[10]

Setup

Université Paris-Saclay will combine resources from the following universities, grandes écoles, research organizations, and the Systematic Paris-Region cluster:[7]
