The University of Minnesota Medical Center is the main university hospital for the University of Minnesota Medical School, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

There are two campuses: one located on the East Bank of the Mississippi River and the other located on the West Bank. It is owned and operated by Fairview Health Services, and is staffed by physicians of University of Minnesota Physicians and community physicians. The East Bank campus was previously known as University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview. The West Bank campus was previously Saint Mary's Hospital and Fairview-Riverside Medical Center. The University of Minnesota Medical Center is a teaching institution

Facilities

The 874-bed University of Minnesota Medical Center includes inpatient and outpatient facilities and is connected with six community clinics and many specialty clinics.[1] Services range from "primary care", "emergency care" and the delivery of thousands of babies each year to care of patients. Areas of specialization includes organ and blood and marrow transplantation, neurosciences, pediatrics and behavioral illnesses.

History

The medical center and University of Minnesota Children's Hospital, were created in 1997 as a result of the merger of the University of Minnesota Hospitals and Clinics with Fairview Health Services. In 2014, Children's Hospital was renamed University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital in recognition of the financial support that Minnesota Masonic Charities has given the medical center over the past 60 years.

The world's first open heart surgery and the first bone marrow transplant were done at the University of Minnesota Medical Center.[2]
