University of Mazandaran is a university located in Mazandaran Province of Iran, headquartered in the city of Babolsar.

University of Mazandaran (UMZ), currently the largest state higher education center in the province of Mazandaran, had formerly consisted of a number of tertiary education centers. In 1979 the centers were officially merged to form what is now known as University of Mazandaran. In recent years, UMZ has made significant progress, expanding itself with vision both qualitatively and quantitatively. It presently includes 12 faculties on its campus: Faculty of Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of Theology and Islamic Sciences, Faculty of Marine and Oceanic Sciences, Faculty of Basic Sciences, Faculty of Arts and Architecture, Faculty of Law and Political Sciences, Faculty of Physical Education and Sports Sciences, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Faculty of Chemistry, Faculty of Technology and Engineering, and Faculty of Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism.

UMZ has now about 12000 students who are currently studying at undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate levels and over 400 faculty members teaching and researching at different faculties of the university. Until 2016, more than 15000 students got graduated from different faculties of our university. Based on the policy of the Iranian Ministry of Science, Research and Technology (MSRT), UMZ is committed to providing high quality education, innovative research at undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate levels leading to scientific and technological achievements.

History

Mazandaran University, formerly Reza Shah Kabir University, was founded in 1979 by the merging of Babolsar College of Economics and Social Sciences (مدرسه‌ عالي‌ علوم‌ اقتصادي‌ و اجتماعي‌ بابلسر) est. 1970, College of Higher Education (دانشكده‌ تحصيلات‌ تكميلي) est. 1974, Babol Higher Technical School (دانشسراي عالي فني بابل) est. 1969, Sari College of Agriculture (مدرسه عالي كشاورزي ساري) est 1972, Gorgan School of Natural Resources (مدرسه عالي منابع طبيعي گرگان) est. 1957, which later separated off into Gorgan University in 1986.

Harvard University contributed academically, administratively, and to the original design of the predecessor of University of Mazandaran, which at the time was known as "Reza Shah Kabir University" in the 1970s.[1]

Currently

The university currently covers an area of 350 hectares, and operates 6 Faculties, offering numerous bachelor's degrees and twenty-six postgraduate programs in M.A, M.Sc and/or Ph.D levels.

In order to elect the president of the university, the Minister of Science, Research and Technology, would propose the candidate to the Supreme Cultural Council and the suggested person will be appointed as the president after being confirmed by the Council and through the decree of the Minister.

The main duties of UMZ president include:

  • Elaborating the executive policy of the university within the framework of academic, educational, and research policies,
  • Monitoring the smooth performance of plans,
  • Monitoring the educational, research, cultural, administrative, finance, and developmental activities,
  • Monitoring current activities as well as local and international university communications,
  • Creating coordination between different units in order to solve possible problems and referring them to the related officials.

Some of the responsibilities of Office the President:

-Sorting out the president's daily meetings,

-Following up the University legal affairs,

-Referring the related affairs to faculties and vice-presidents,

-Arranging executive meetings and tracking down issues endorsed in the past,

-Arranging meetings and events,

-Following up different affairs of the university in the ministry
