The University of Abuja in the Nigerian capital Abuja was established on January 1, 1988 (under Decree No. 110 of 1992 as amended) as a dual-mode university with the mandate to run conventional and distance learning programmes. Academic work began in the University in 1990 with the matriculation of the pioneers students.

The Law Faculty being the pride of the University of Abuja, is known for having one of the most Organised Student Representative Councils (LAWSAN) in the Country. The Council (LAWSAN) is renowned for its well developed Students Judicial System; complete with Judges, a Vibrant Ministry of Justice and Many functional Law Firms run solely by Students, namely; Justice Chambers, Imeh Ekanem Chambers, Alex Izinyion chambers, Liberal Chambers, Yuunusa Usman Chambers,Titans Chambers and Justice Umar Abdullahi Chamber. The Law Students Association of Nigeria (Uniabuja) has won the University many National and International competitions.[1]

Academics

The university runs regular degree, diploma, and postgraduate programmes. Due to its location in the Federal Capital Territory has a Centre for Distance Learning School which provides university education to those who cannot acquire such education through the regular university system and those interested in acquiring new knowledge and specialized skills.

The university runs a consultancy services sub-degree program and an institute of education to cater for the professional needs of teachers and specialized needs of government education bodies; it provides avenues for the establishment of linkages on education matters with organizations and institutions in and outside Nigeria.

Faculty of Education Faculty of Education is one of the first Faculties from inception, and still imbibe academic excellent, social values, environmental spirit among others in students for self-reliant and dynamism in logical thinking. Education students are referred to as The Students of the Mother Faculties. The current Dean is by name Prof Maisamari (a Professor of English Education). There are four Departments and many programmes under the department. These include: Department of Educational Management (DEM); Art and Social science Education (ASSE); Department of Counselling and Educational Psychology (CEP); and Department of Science and Environmental Education (SEE). Reputable Lecturers in the department of Educational Management include; Prof. Gidado Tahir, Prof. S. Yusuf Ingawa, Prof. Hauwa Imam, Prof. Rosemary K. Udeozor. Associate Prof. R. C. Akuchie, Dr Wasiu Olugbenga Gabadeen, Dr Binta I. Zaifada, Dr. Eunice Bose Oke, Mrs F. N. Mamman Dr. Monday Sunday Dada, Dr. Hauwa Mohammed, Dr. Love E. Ebuk, Mr. A. A. Abdulrahman. The Head of Department is Dr. W. O. Gabadeen at present.

Campus

The university has its mini campus in Gwagwalada, Abuja, Nigeria and a permanent site covering about 11,824 hectares located along the Kaduna - Lokoja - Abuja Road. The Permanent site is home to the Faculties of Arts, Science, Management Science Veterinary medicine, Agriculture and Engineering with the College of medicine and contains the university senate and other administrative building. The mini campus is still the temporary location to the Faculties of education social science, and law.
