Under Secretary of Energy for Energy and Environment

The Under Secretary of Energy for Energy and Environment, also known as the Under Secretary of Energy, is a position within the United States Department of Energy. The Under Secretary oversees the Department's energy and environment programs, including environmental cleanup of the nuclear weapons complex, nuclear waste management efforts, and applied energy research and developmental activities. The current acting Under Secretary is David B. Sandalow.

The Under Secretary of Energy is appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate. The Under Secretary is paid at level III of the Executive Schedule,^[1] meaning he or she receives a basic annual salary of $152,000 as of 2006.^[2] Previous Under Secretaries by recency include Under Secretary Bud Albright, who was confirmed on September 3, 2007.^[3] Acting Under Secretary Bill Ostendorff,^[4] Acting Under Secretary Dennis Spurgeon,^[5] David K. Garman,^[6] and Robert G. Card.^[7]

The Under Secretary is assisted by the Associate Under Secretary, the Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, the Assistant Secretary for Environmental Management, the Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy, the Assistant Secretary for Fossil Energy, the Assistant Secretary for Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability, the Director of the Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management, and the Director of the Office of Legacy Management.^[8]
