Uma Anand

Uma Anand (1923 – November 13, 2009) was an Indian journalist, actress and a broadcaster in the mid 1900s. She was born in the year 1923 in Lahore, Pakistan. She was wife of the prominent Bollywood film director Chetan Anand and mother of Ketan Anand and Vivek Anand. She worked as an actress in Neecha Nagar (1946). She also wrote Taxi Driver (1954 film) with her husband Chetan and her brother-in-law Vijay Anand), that starred her mother's cousin Kalpana Kartik[1] and her brother-in-law Dev Anand.[2] After an estrangement from her husband, she became a companion of Ebrahim Alkazi.[3] She died November 13, 2009.[4]

Life

She was an editor of Sangeet Natak which was a journal published by the Sangeet Natak Academi from 1965-1981. She also wrote many children books that were translated and published into various different Indian languages by National Book Trust of India.[5] Her work on the last book was co-authored by her eldest son Ketan Anand.[6] The book was named Chetan Anand: The Poetics of Film and it portrayed the life in theatre and cinema in Mumbai, India in early 40s and 50s.
