USNS Trenton (T-EPF-5), (formerly JHSV-5), (ex-Resolute) is a Spearhead-class expeditionary fast transport. Spearhead-class ships are used to support overseas operations, conduct humanitarian aid and disaster relief, and support special operations forces. This type of vessel also has an aviation flight deck and can operate in shallow waters.[6][7] The Trenton completed acceptance trials on 13 March 2015[8] and was delivered to the United States Navy on 13 April 2015.[5]

Shortly after delivery, the Navy revealed that the Trenton would be used for at-sea tests of its experimental electromagnetic railgun instead of the previously selected USNS Millinocket (T-EPF-3). Tests will begin in late summer 2016 off the coast of Florida to assess the gun's ability to perform naval surface fire support against static floating targets 25–50 nmi (29–58 mi; 46–93 km) away using GPS-guided hyper velocity projectiles (HVPs).[9]
