Turbett Township is a township in Juniata County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 819 at the 2000 census.

History

The Lehman's, Port Royal Covered Bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.[1]

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 16.5 square miles (42.9 km²), of which, 16.4 square miles (42.5 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²) of it (0.79%) is water.

Turbett Township is bordered by Milford Township and Port Royal to the north, Walker Township to the north and east, Perry County to the south and Spruce Hill Township to the west.

Demographics

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 819 people, 308 households, and 251 families residing in the township. The population density was 49.9 people per square mile (19.3/km²). There were 403 housing units at an average density of 24.5/sq mi (9.5/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 99.39% White, 0.12% African American, 0.24% from other races, and 0.24% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.73% of the population.

There were 308 households out of which 33.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 72.1% were married couples living together, 6.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.5% were non-families. 17.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 2.99.

In the township the population was spread out with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 26.0% from 45 to 64, and 12.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 101.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.3 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $40,492. Males had a median income of $28,095 versus $21,538 for females. The per capita income for the township was $14,905. About 6.1% of families and 8.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.0% of those under age 18 and 27.5% of those age 65 or over.
