The Jinan Public Trolleybus System (Chinese: 济南无轨电车系统) serves the city of Jinan, in the province of Shandong, China. Opened in 1977, the system is operated by the Jinan Public Transport Corporation, and presently consists of four lines.

History

The first trolleybus route in Jinan, the Old Route 1 (now the Route 101) was opened to public on 1 January 1977. In the same year, the Old Route 2 (Route 102, currently) commenced operations. The route numbers of these two route were changed in 1992.

In the late 1990s, two more routes, Route 103 and 104, were opened.

Lines

One of the oldest JK6120D-model trolleybus in Jinan, 2006. Note the "wrapped" body-advertisement and the old-style route indicator (which is still driven by a light bulb, rather than LED matrix). All trolleybuses in this batch retired before 2012 already.

As of 2011, the system was made up of the following lines:

Line Route Length
101路 (Route 101) Xin Xi Lu Bei Kou (辛西路北口, North End of West NanXinZhuang Road) – Dian Liu Zhuang (甸柳庄, DianLiu Village/Community) 12.0 km
102路 (Route 102) University of Jinan (济南大学) – Ge Jia Zhuang (葛家庄, Village/Community of Ge *1) 14.3 km
103路 (Route 103) Yao Jia Zhuang (姚家庄, Village/Community of Yao *1) – Jing Si Lu Xi Kou (经四路西口, West End of Jingsi Road *2) 9.7 km
104路 (Route 104) University of Jinan (济南大学) – Bao Tu Quan Dong Men (趵突泉东门, East Gate of Baotu Spring)
*1 Those two "___ Jia Zhuang" mean, in Chinese expression, a village (in the past time) or community (presently) where most residents are with a CERTAIN surname (although maybe not currently). For example, "Yao Jia Zhuang (姚家庄)" means a community most of whose residents have surname "Yao (姚)".
*2 Note that although this "Jing" in "Jing Si Road" does mean "Longitude" in English, it is DIFFERENT from what we learned in geology fields as "Jing" (longitude) streets in Jinan city are all in "W-E" direction while "Wei" (latitude) streets all go in "N-S" direction.

Fleet

The only model of trolleybus used CURRENTLY in Jinan is the JK6120D, manufactured by China National Heavy Duty Truck Group (Chinese: 中国重型汽车集团有限公司), or Sinotruk, which is based in Jinan. Some of them have, or are planned to, retire due to the reach of their designed lifetime for service.

BEFORE this model, Jinan also employed some second-hand (used) SK561G articulated trolleybuses, which were purchased from Luoyang city, Henan province. Those 1980s-models all retired before 2007.

Since the new trolley-BRT route, the Western Ring Road BRT (二环西路快速公交), is opening soon, new trolleybuses (most likely to be from YuTong; Please re-edit this part once the new units are ensured and put onto public) are in plan for purchase.

Besides, by the end of 2013, two of the 40 brand-new Yutong ZK5125A trolleybuses have arrived Ji'nan. These new trolleybuses are featured with 12-meter body length, air-conditioning, one-step low floor, leather-covered seats, "maternal-and-child" seat, full CANBUS system, Chinese LED head scrollers, secondary Lithium battery system and more. These new trolleybuses may be employed by either the Route 101 or 102, replacing the oldest batch of JK6120D.
