Chronology
Predecessor Toyota Kijang (F70/F80)

The Toyota Avanza (Japanese: トヨタ アバンザ Toyota Abanza) is a mini MPV designed by Daihatsu and marketed by Toyota. It is produced in Indonesia[5] and also contract assembled in Malaysia (under Perodua) for the first generation. Daihatsu designed and manufactures the vehicle, which is then sold by both Daihatsu and Toyota under Xenia and Avanza name plate respectively. Daihatsu supplies the vehicle to Toyota under a consigned production and OEM manufacturing agreement.[6] The car was launched at the Gaikindo Auto Expo in 2003 and sold over 100,000 units that year. The name "Avanza" was taken from the Italian word "avanzato", which means "advance".

The Avanza is a new model developed as an entry-level MPV. Its spiritual predecessor was the Kijang, whose model program has since been split to two different models (the other being the larger, more expensive Kijang Innova) to expand Toyota's reach in the MPV sector. The Avanza has similar to the Kijang's rural road-capable, rear-wheel drive, body-on-frame design.

In addition to Indonesia and Malaysia, the Avanza is sold in Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Brunei, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Lebanon, Mexico, Peru, Egypt, and various other African countries. A rebadged version of the car was sold in China under the FAW badge until 2010.

As of October 2011, there have been 1 million Avanza/Xenia units sold, including 113,000 exported units.[7][8]

Engines

Introduced in December 2003, the Avanza is a five-door MPV with a front engine, rear-wheel drive layout. It features a 1.3-liter K3-DE EFI gasoline inline-four engine with a maximum output of 86 PS (63 kW; 85 hp) at 6,000 rpm (before 2006), a 1.3-liter K3-VE VVT-i gasoline engine that produces 92 PS (68 kW; 91 hp) at 6,000 rpm, and a 1.5-liter 3SZ-VE gasoline engine that produces 104 PS (76 kW; 103 hp) at 6,000 rpm. In other markets, the Avanza also offered with a 1.4-liter 1ND-TV diesel engine that produces 90 PS (66 kW; 89 hp) at 3,800 rpm.[9]

In 2015, the Avanza features two new engines, consists of 1.3-liter 1NR-VE Dual VVT-i gasoline engine that produces 97 PS (71 kW; 96 hp) at 6,000 rpm and 1.5-liter 2NR-VE Dual VVT-i gasoline engine that produces 104 PS (76 kW; 103 hp) at 6,000 rpm. Its engine codes use -VE suffix instead of -FE because both engines are also used in Daihatsu cars.[10]

Indonesia

When the Avanza was launched in Indonesia it was available in two models: the 1.3 E and 1.3 G. In January 2005, the Avanza 1.3 S was added with a 1.3-liter 16-valve DOHC VVT-i gasoline engine, four-speed automatic and a new anti-lock braking system. A new exterior color (black) was added at the same time. Only 5,000 units were sold. The Avanza later became one of the best selling cars in Indonesia.

The Avanza was restyled near the end of the third quarter of 2006 with a new VVT-i engine, new grille, new bumpers, new interior, and new front and rear lamps.[13] The 1.3 S was replaced by the 2006 Avanza 1.5 S, using a new 1.5-liter, 16-valve DOHC VVT-i gasoline engine along with the new anti-lock braking system. The 1.3 E and 1.3 G models were upgraded to use the 1.3-liter, 16-valve DOHC VVT-i gasoline engine from the outgoing 1.3 S model.

In 2008, the J line was made available without the third row seat. This particular line is popularly used as metered taxicabs in the Philippines; although it is sometimes mistaken for a UV vehicle with a dedicated route, like how its ancestors (Tamaraw FX and Revo) were utilized.

The Avanza was updated in 2008 with a new ceiling with grooves to improve airflow to the rear and a new interior colour scheme.

The Avanza has folding seats in the back, forming a third row of seats.
