Total Drama Presents: The Ridonculous Race (also known as Total Drama: Ridonculous Race, or simply The Ridonculous Race) is a Canadian animated reality television series which lampoons the conventions commonly found in reality television. The show is a spin-off of the original Total Drama series created in 2007 as well as the second series created as part of the overall franchise. The series is created by Fresh TV Inc. and distributed by Cake Entertainment and airs on Cartoon Network in North America. The series premiered first in the United States on September 7, 2015,[2] and began airing in Canada on January 4, 2016.[3][4] It also aired on ABC3 in Australia, starting December 12, 2015. Like the original series, this series consists of 26 episodes per season.[5]

Plot

The series parodies popular travel and competition style reality shows, including The Amazing Race.[6] It will take place around the world and feature pairs of contestants, rather than teams, in the style of the reality series it is parodying.

The first season of The Ridonculous Race consists of mostly all new characters, with four characters returning from the original Total Drama series. All characters will be split into 18 teams of two, and must complete challenges around the world to win and split a one million Canadian dollar prize.[2]

Racers will visit a different country in every episode and perform in "legs" while the team to finish in last place may or may not be eliminated.[7] In each of the 26 different locations, each pair must go to a "Don Box" to receive clues that let them decide which challenge they want to perform in.

Challenges are of four different types: an "either-or" (similar to Detours from The Amazing Race), a "botch-or-watch" (similar to Roadblocks), an "all-in" or a "superteam'. An "either-or" gives the teams a choice from two challenges, the "botch-or-watch" is a challenge that must be done by one person on the team, specifically the person who did not take on a prior challenge's component, an "all-in" is a challenge that both team members must take part in, and a "super team" is a challenge in which multiple teams complete together in a challenge.

However, at some point in the game if any person doesn't follow the specific directions of the challenge, they will be faced with a timed penalty once reaching a "chill zone", the finish line for each leg, before stepping foot on the "carpet of completion".

Cast and characters

Characters in bold are reused characters from the original series while the rest are new. However, some voice actors and actresses who previously worked on Total Drama returned to voice new characters. Also, Anne Maria, Blaineley, and Chris McLean all made a non-speaking cameo appearance in the season finale. All the voice actors, their characters and their episode count are listed below:

Production

Production commenced on January 1, 2014 and concluded on October 30, 2015.[8] It was announced that Alex Ganetakos was producing the show,[9] Terry McGurrin was writing the screenplay,[10] and that Chad Hicks was directing.[11] The new host Don was revealed in a Fresh TV post in October 2014.[12] It was confirmed that 26 episodes would be picked up for the show and that it would air sometime the same year.[13] However, one of the producers, Alex Ganetakos, stated that many Ridonculous Race seasons are possible if the first season is successful.[14] In June 2015, the first episode was leaked, revealing all of the characters.

Casting

Even though some of the characters from the main series will make appearances, the spin-off series will primarily have a new cast.[15] The spin-off series will be a "Buddy Comedy" and will include 36 characters (18 teams of two), four which are from the original series (Owen, Noah, Geoff, and Leonard) and the rest brand new characters.[2] Kristin Fairlie, the voice actor for the character Bridgette from the original series, was cast to voice one of the new contestants, Carrie.[16] Scott McCord (voice of characters Owen and Trent in the original series) as well as Carter Hayden (voice of Noah in the original) were also revealed to be returning to the cast, and were seen in the recording studio together.[17] It was later confirmed that the actors were indeed going to voice the characters Owen and Noah.[18] It was eventually revealed that the first pair is to be the aforementioned character Carrie and her best friend Devin, who is played by Jeff Geddis.[19] In February, the second pair was revealed: Stephanie and Ryan. The two are voiced by Nicki Burke of Dead Rising 2 and Joseph Motiki, from Rescue Heroes.[20] In a new promotion by Cake Entertainment, Geoff was also revealed to be among the returning cast, teamed up with Brody, one of his friends from home.[21] The father-son team of Dwayne and Dwayne Jr. was also revealed.[22]

In June, a pair of goths called Ennui and Crimson,[23] and Mary and Ellody, two close friends who are dubbed the "Geniuses", were revealed.[24] A week later, the fourth pair to be released are Emma and Kitty, who are Asian sisters with opposite personalities, referred to as the "Sisters".[25] A week later, another team was confirmed; Chet and Lorenzo, known as "the Stepbrothers".[26] Next to be revealed are twins Mickey and Jay, called "the Adversity Twins", who are plagued with countless phobias, allergies, injuries, disorders, and ailments.[27] The rest of the teams were all revealed shortly thereafter.

Setting

Many countries and their geographic elements are used as settings for the whole series, with a different country used for each episode.[7] The starting point for the first episode is the city of Toronto, Ontario, Canada,[28] where characters must then travel to many other locations throughout the race. The countries that are shown in the series for the characters to visit are: Argentina,[29] Australia,[30] the Bahamas,[31] Brazil,[32] China,[33] Finland,[34] France,[35][36] Iceland,[37] India,[38] Indonesia,[39] Mexico,[40] Morocco,[41] New Zealand,[42] Romania,[43] Russia,[44] Vietnam,[45] Zimbabwe,[46] the United Arab Emirates,[47] and the United States.[48][49][50] They also enter the Arctic Circle during a leg that leads them back to Canada.[51][52] The finish line is located in New York City.

Sixteen teams now travel south to the Mediterranean Sea. Their challenge is to swim with sharks, build sandcastles and then make their way to Iceland on speedboats. Father & Son team Dwayne & Dwayne Jr would have won the leg if not for a 20 minute penalty which allows the Ice Dancers to finish first instead, and Fashion Bloggers Tom and Jen would've came in 2nd but they got a 20 minute penalty for arriving to the Mediterranean Sea in a Yacht instead of a train. The Surfer Dudes believe they're done for, but they manage to stay in the race, while The Geniuses took so long in the sandcastle challenge that they ended up becoming the third team eliminated from the race.

Fifteen teams are now in Iceland, where they first speak an Icelandic phrase to a goose lady and then either eat an Icelandic feast or look for fossils in a cave. Kelly and Taylor got a one hour penalty for the Icelandic phrase they got it wrong but Kelly went back to the start when both of them had to so instead of getting 7th place they got 13th. The winners of this leg are surprisingly the Goths, and the Vegans get last place, but since it was a non-elimination leg, they were still in the race.

Fifteen teams still remain and they all travel to Brazil, where they all explore the jungle and prepare to participate in Carnivale. The ice dancers took first place once again, and while despite coming in first, the Vegans ended up with a penalty that get them eliminated from the race, after a close call between them and the Rockers.

Fourteen teams now travel to Transylvania. Their challenge is to transport themselves in coffins and then perform gymnastics. The ice dancers came in first once again. The Goths came in 6th but got a 10 minute penalty so they came in 12th instead. The Daters were almost out of the game, but thanks to Tom and Jen being so slow, they came in last and became the 5th team eliminated.

The Surfer Dudes win the leg and The Daters who come in last on this leg, decided to break up and become The Haters on national television, but they are safe as this was a non-elimination leg.

The rockers, despite them coming in last on the previous leg obviously win this challenge due to their amazing talent, while the Adversity Twins end up losing their focus due to their stage fright and became the 7th team eliminated.

The eleven remaining teams now travel to Zimbabwe to take on a waterfall selfie and photographic rhinos. Meanwhile, the ice dancers travel back to Hawaii on their own plane in order for them to break a curse while Father & Son team Dwayne & Dwayne Jr become separated from each other. The Police Cadets win the leg (even though they trip and fall along with the Surfer Dudes) while the last position was left between Father & Son and the Ice Dancers. In the end, Dwayne reunites with his son Junior so the Ice Dancers ended up coming in last (also because they arrived in Zimbabwe too late because of Josses' unlucky lava rock). However, they were spared because of a non-elimination leg.

The eleven remaining teams go to Australia's Geelong Prison and must escape by using various methods possible. The ice dancers and police cadets each get a Boomerang and use it on each other. Carrie and Devin win the leg and Devin called Shelly but she (Devin's girlfriend) breaks up with him to be with Ashton, her tennis instructor. The Stepbrothers start to get along and there is still no elimination.

The eleven remaining teams stay in Australia for a bunny hunt challenge. The Ice Dancers paint a bunny to fool the Police Cadets. They then fly their own gliders to New Zealand. The Ice Dancers finally came back on top, while both The Rockers and The Stepbrothers ended up in a double elimination, sealing their fate in the race.

However, It was another non-elimination leg so they are still in the race.

Meanwhile, the Surfer Dudes complete all challenges and win the leg (even though the Goths managed to finish the second challenge). In the end, Father & Son team Dwayne & Dwayne Jr manage to strengthen up their emotional relationship after getting eliminated from the race.

After the five stages of grief, Devin suddenly realizes he likes Carrie, but at the same time she had stopped falling for him, However, they are saved by a non elimination leg.[75]

The Final 5 teams now travel to Russia where they must traverse down the deepest hole in the world to collect a ball. The Ice Dancers cheat for the lead, and even with a major penalty, they still win the leg while the Police Cadets come in last but are safe because of a non-elimination leg and MacArthur feels any regret for damaging Sanders' arm. The cave at the bottom of the deepest hole contains Morlocks - a species found in the 1960's science fiction film The Time Machine (film adaption of the 1895 science fiction novel by H.G Wells).

The Final 5 teams now travel to India to harvest tea crops and then ride a train. The Ice Dancers cheat once again by derailing the train, and when The Sisters and the Ice Dancers arrived, the Ice Dancers got a one hour penalty that most of the teams are able to overcome, so The Sisters won the race. However The Dancers are still in the race due to the Haters stopping before the Chill Zone to declare that they have now made up for each other and becoming Daters again, eliminating both of them from the race.

  • Note: This is the only episode in the series to not feature any characters from the original Total Drama series.

The Final four teams now travel to Buenos Aires for a Tango dancing challenge. The ice dancers apply legal sabotage to help them win the leg. Later on, Carrie and Devin finally confess their true feelings for each other, but it all does not end so well as Devin is then pushed off a cliff by the Sisters' emu and becomes seriously injured. Therefore, Carrie decides to quit the race along with him, but they get to choose the team to come back to the race, so they choose the Surfer Dudes to take their place due to this being a non-elimination leg.

The new final 4 teams now travel to the Bahamas where they first must find a secret map that leads to an underwater treasure. They then jump into the water and begin searching for that treasure. Josee's claustrophobia makes her run out of oxygen really fast, but MacArthur rescues her, declaring that she'll be the one to take down the Ice Dancers. Meanwhile, the sisters are delayed when Kitty gets stuck in a rock. The Surfer Dudes won the race because Brody came out of the water first. Once the rest escapes, it's a close race to the finish. The Sisters end up coming in last so they are the last team eliminated from the race. The new final 3 teams now make their way to the finale in New York City.

The final 3 teams are now in New York City and are ready for the final leg. Their first challenge is to go to the Empire State Building and climb up all the way to the top in order to grab a case and then take the case to Central Park. Since the Surfer Dude's taxi was broken by the Ice Dancer's taxi, they took the subway and get a huge lead so they reach Central Park first with the case. Meanwhile, the other two teams are stuck in heavy traffic so they both reach Central Park much later, but almost at the same time. Therefore, the Police Cadets reach the Chill Zone first by a few seconds while the ice dancers are finally eliminated from the race. The final leg is to take the case to the lake and then try to figure out the combination that is being written on one of several buoys, and then open the case that will reveal a map that leads to the finish line. The surfers already had their lead, but are looking in the wrong place so the Cadets begin searching first in the lake. The cadets are the first to open up their briefcase, but MacArthur accidentally puts a hole in their boat, forcing her to row as fast as she can to shore, tiring her out. Geoff gives a motivational speech to Brody as they find their combination and make it to the finish line first. It's a neck to neck battle between the surfers and the cadets, but in the end the Surfer Dudes win, but only by a close second, and the police cadets are not even surprised that they had lost the race because MacArthur collapsed. All the other teams who were previously eliminated are mostly seen cheering at the finish line, and Don declares the surfers as the winners of this new series, so they are given the one million dollar prize.

  • Alternate ending: The Cadets stand on the final carpet first and do not collapse, while the Surfer Dudes arrive a moment later, and they are declared as the winners of the race. Everything afterwards is edited to depict the cadets holding the million dollar prize, while the surfers are standing out with the rest of the peanut gallery.

The show received positive reviews with an average of 7.5/10.

Media

A video game has also been released that allows players to use any of the series' 36 main characters and race them in short endless running type games.[7] The game, titled "Donculous Dash", was released on January 4, 2016, but it is only available in Canada. The game can be downloaded on the Canadian app store[100] and a demo version is also available on their Cartoon Network website.[101]
