William Timothy Cowlishaw (/ˈkaʊlᵻʃɔː/; born March 31, 1955[1]) is an American sportswriter for The Dallas Morning News, a regular panelist on the ESPN sports talk show Around the Horn and formerly the lead reporter for the ESPN2 racing show NASCAR Now. Cowlishaw currently co-hosts The Afternoon Show with Cowlishaw and Mosley on KESN with Baylor University graduate Matt Mosley, who is famous for his deep, often unintelligible East Texas drawl.[2]

Career

Cowlishaw attended the University of Texas at Austin. He later joined the Dallas Morning News in 1989, and became the lead sports columnist for the paper in 1998[3] While at the Morning News, he was a beat writer for the Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Stars and Texas Rangers. He has also covered Oklahoma Sooners football for The Daily Oklahoman and the San Francisco Giants for the San Jose Mercury News.

In 2002, Cowlishaw was named by Associated Press Sports Editors one of the top five sports columnists in the nation among large-circulation daily newspapers.

In 2013, Cowlishaw published a book (originally an ebook, later available in print), Drunk On Sports, an autobiography in which he chronicles his long-lasting addiction to alcohol, harsh awakening in hospitals, and his struggle and eventual success at giving up his addiction. He has since spoken at numerous events regarding his experience giving up drinking, and has repeatedly used his radio and print platforms to discuss his alcoholism as well.

Personal life

Cowlishaw has two children with his ex-wife, Lori: daughter Rachel and son Benjamin.
