Tang Yan or Tiffany Tang (born December 6, 1983[1]) is a Chinese actress. She graduated from the Central Academy of Drama in 2006. In 2007, she was nominated for the White Magnolia Award (白玉兰奖) for Best Actress at the Shanghai International Film Festival for her film debut in Farewell for Love.[2] She left her company Orange Sky Entertainment Group mid-2012 to set up her own studio. She is currently one of the highest paid Chinese TV actresses.[3]

Known as the "Ratings Queen", Tang is noted for her roles in Chinese Paladin 3 (2009), My Daughter (2011), Xuan-Yuan Sword: Scar of Sky (2012), Perfect Couple (2014), My Sunshine (2015), Lady & Liar (2015), Legend of Fragrance (2015), Diamond Lover (2015) and The Princess Weiyoung (2016).

Career

2007-2014: Rise to fame; Increasing Popularity and Recognition

Tiffany Tang acted in many television series and movies in her early time. In 2007, she won Best Actress nominations at the Beijing College Student Film Festival and Shanghai Television Festival for her performance in the film Farewell for Love.

Subsequently, she rose to fame after starring in the popular wuxia-fantasy drama Chinese Paladin 3, a prequel to Chinese Paladin and an adaptation from the video game of the same title. Tang's portrayal of Zi Xuan and her chemistry with Wallace Huo's drew positive reviews from both critics and fans, with many praising Tang's rich and heart-warming performance.

The following year, she co-starred with Jay Chou in the Taiwanese television series Pandamen. Both Jay and fellow cast member Yuhao Zhan recognized Tang's musical potential, and specially composed a single titled "Love Attraction" for her. The single was released as part of the OST of the drama.

Tang's popularity further increased after starring in the drama My Daughter, which aired for two seasons of 40 episodes each. The series premiered on Anhui Television with the highest ratings of the year. Her breakthrough role in this drama won her several awards and contributed to her rise as an actress where she was offered many roles for later projects.[4]

In 2012, Tang was invited by Hu Ge to star in Xuan-Yuan Sword: Scar of Sky, a television drama adaption of the popular role-playing game produced by developed by Taiwanese company Softstar Entertainment Inc. The drama aired in July on Hunan TV and gained popularity due to the ensemble cast, garnering a total of 2 billion views online. Tang subsequently won Most Popular Actress at the 3rd LeTV Awards.

In the following year, she reunited with Chinese Paladin 3 co-star Wallace Huo in Perfect Couple, a historical romantic comedy written by Tong Hua. The television series turned out to be a huge success, achieving 7.8 billion hits on major streaming sites and becoming the most popular drama online.

2015: Mainstream Popularity and Expansion into movies

In 2015, Tang starred in a series of successful dramas, which put her fame and popularity at the highest peak.

One of her many notable works include My Sunshine, a drama series based on the novel Silent Separation by Gu Man. The series was a commercial hit, and surpassed 8.5 billion views to become the most watched contemporary drama online.

She then starred in Lady & Liar, which broke records to become the most viewed republic-era period drama online. This was followed up another republican drama Legend of Fragrance, which was also successful, achieving a rating of 3.43 (the highest rating achieved for a drama's first episode in ten years) and breaking 100 million views with 2 episodes in a day.

Tang then participated in her first Korean-Chinese collaboration, pairing up with Korean superstar Rain in Diamond Lover. The drama premiered on July 20, 2015 and achieved huge success, earning high ratings throughout its 60 episode run. Tang then starred in the popular web drama The Lost Tomb as the only major female character.

Following the airing of these dramas, Tang earned the nickname of "ratings queen", establishing her position as one of the most sought-after TV actresses in mainland China. She was nominated at the 17th Huading Awards for Best Actress in all three categories (ancient, contemporary and modern) for her performance in Perfect Couple, My Sunshine, and Legend of Fragrance respectively; and won the award for the contemporary category. She also became the ambassador for the 7th TV Drama Awards, and won Actress with the Most Media Influence as well as Audience's Favourite Character.

In December, she was cast as in the titular role of Weiyoung in the historical palace drama The Princess Weiyoung.

Films

From March to July, she filmed The Three-Body Problem, a 3D science action film scheduled to be released in 2017. In April, Tang attended the 5th Beijing International Film Festival as an award presenter. In September, she had a supporting role in the hugely successful 3D action film Chronicles of the Ghostly Tribe. She then began focusing her career on the big screen, by taking on several scripts and filming multiple projects at the same time.

2016-: Big Screen Ventures

In April 2016, Tang starred in MBA Partners, an inspirational movie about the dreams and ambitions of three women at different life stages. She was also cast in Cook Up A Storm, an upcoming Lunar New Year film scheduled to be released in 2017.

In July 2016, Tang starred in Korean-Chinese production Bounty Hunters alongside famous Korean actor Lee Min-ho and Wallace Chung. Tang plays a femme fatale in the film, and received praises for taking on a role that is different from her usual "candy" characters.

In September 2016, she played the character of Zixia in A Chinese Odyssey Part Three. The film was released on the mid-autumn festival and topped box office charts. The same month, she was spotted filming in Milan for Europe Raiders, along with Tony Leung and Kris Wu.

In October 2016, Tang was crowned "Golden Eagle Goddess" for the 11th China Golden Eagle TV Art Festival.

On November 11, The Princess Weiyoung started airing on Dragon TV and Beijing TV. The drama was a commercial success, and surpassed 10 billion views. The same month, she was cast in the television series See You Again alongside Jing Boran.

Achievements

In 2001, she took part in the "Shulei Century Star" Chinese Grand Beauties Competition, with the "Top Champion" awarded at the end. In 2004, she was selected as one of the 14 "Olympic Babies" by director Zhang Yimou and then performed in the grand "Chinese eight minutes" program at the closure of the Athens Olympic Games. In 2007, Tang became the Spring Festival Party image ambassador for Beijing.[4] In 2014, Tang was ranked 73rd on Forbes China Celebrity List for the first time since the beginning of her career with an annual salary of 2.9 million USD. Forbes China Celebrity List ranks the top 100 Chinese celebrities based on media exposure and income. Tang's rise to success followed her in 2015, where she ranked 20th on Forbes China Celebrity List with an income revenue of 45 million yuan.[5]
