Thomas Smyth (bishop)
Thomas Smyth (1650 – 1725) was an Irish bishop in the last decade of the 17th century and the first three of the 18th.[1]
Life
He was born at Dundrum, the son of William Smyth and Mary Dewdall. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin. He became vice-chancellor of Trinity College in 1714.[2]
A former Dean of Emly,[3] Smith was nominated Bishop of Limerick, Ardfert and Aghadoe on 15 November 1695 and consecrated on 8 December 1695. He died on 4 May 1725.[4]
Family
Smyth married Dorothea, daughter of Ulysses Burgh. They had 10 sons and three daughters. The seventh son was George Smyth, and the eighth Arthur Smyth.[2]
