Thomas Cook (India) Ltd. is an integrated travel and travel related financial services company, with headquarters in Mumbai, India. The company offers a range of travel services including Foreign Exchange, International and Domestic Holidays, Visa, Passport, Travel Insurance & MICE. In 1881, Thomas Cook established its first office in India and eventually it extended its footprint all across the country. Now the presence of TCIL extends over 233 locations (including 23 airport counters) in 94 cities across India, Sri Lanka and Mauritius.[3] The company received the award for Favourite Outbound Tour Operator at the Outlook Travellers Awards 2015.[4]

History

Thomas Cook (India) Ltd. pioneered many ventures including the invention of the world’s package tour in 1841, the first pre-paid hotel coupon in 1868, creation of the first holiday brochure in 1858, and conceptualization of the first Travellers Cheques in 1874.[5]

In 1881, Thomas Cook started its India operations in Mumbai, and in October 1978, saw it christened Thomas Cook (India) Ltd. The company made its first public issue in February 1983, and commenced operations in Mauritius in 2000. In the same year, they acquired the Sri Lanka business from Thomas Cook Overseas Ltd, UK.[6]

In 2006, Thomas Cook India Limited acquired LKP Forex Limited and Travel Corporation (India) Pvt. Ltd. (TCI), and in May 2012, Fairbridge Capital (Mauritius) Limited acquired India arm of Thomas Cook Group, and hence became a part of Fairfax Group, Canada.[7]

In 2013, Thomas Cook India Limited acquired Quess Corp (formerly known as Ikya Group - HR, IT Services, Facilities Management, Food Services, Skill Development),[8] and Sterling Holiday Resorts.[9]

In 2015, Thomas Cook Lanka Pvt. Ltd. (a subsidiary of Thomas Cook India Limited) acquired Luxe Asia Pvt. Ltd., Sri Lanka,[10] a regional Destination Management Company handling inbound tourists from globally generating markets to its destinations. In the same year, TCIL announced the acquisition of Kuoni Travel (India) Private Limited, a travel operator in India, and Kuoni Travel (China) Limited, a travel operator in Hong Kong.[11]

Thomas Cook (India) Limited offers a range of products and services including holiday travel, foreign exchange, visa and passport services, foreign exchange, travel insurance, and travel & tourism education.

Holidays

Thomas Cook India provides a wide range of international and domestic holiday packages. The company essentially deals in Group Tours (GIT), Free Individual Tours (FIT), Land Only (excluding flights) and customized tour packages, including budget holiday and honeymoon packages, as featured on the Thomas Cook India online portal.

Forex

Thomas Cook India Limited has been offering Foreign Exchange services to Indian customers for over 100 years. The company is the largest Foreign Exchange money changer in the Indian market for more and deals in 26 major currencies from across the globe. The Borderless Prepaid Card, Thomas Cook India’s flagship travel card, is a multiple-currency card that can hold up to 8 currencies at a time; a second variant is a one-currency card and holds US dollars.

Visa

Thomas Cook India Limited offers visa application services for almost all the countries around the world and for different categories. The company’s online visa service helps with filling of application forms, collection of documents, submission of the application to the respective embassy, and couriering the stamped passport to the applicant.

Travel Insurance

Thomas Cook India also provides online travel insurance plans that offer coverage for personal accident, medical expenses and repatriation, loss/delay of checked baggage, loss of passport, and curtailment/cancellation amongst others. Special travel policies catering to specific needs are also offered to travellers.

Flights

Thomas Cook India Limited offers flight searching and ticket booking services for flights on all major domestic and international airlines. Flight data from all domestic airlines and international airlines is integrated in real-time.

Hotels

The company also offers hotel reservation services in Indian and international cities. Presently, it offers a range of more than 32,000 hotels in India and more than 1,50,000 hotels outside India to choose from.[36] To provide more accommodation options, Thomas Cook acquired the holiday lifestyle company, Sterling Holiday Resorts.[37]
