It was included in the In Competition section at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.[1] At Cannes, Shahab Hosseini won the award for Best Actor and Asghar Farhadi won the award for Best Screenplay.[2][3] The film was selected as the Iranian submission for the Best Foreign Language Film for the 89th Academy Awards, which will take place in 2017.[4]

Plot

The Salesman tells the story of a young couple Emad and Rana who play the lead roles in a local rendition of Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman. Meanwhile, their personal relationship takes a hit after moving into a house that was previously inhabited by a woman who allegedly pursued a career in prostitution.

Reception

The film received critical acclaim. It holds a 100% "fresh" rating on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, based on 10 reviews with a weighted average score of 6.3/10.[6] Metacritic's evaluation is 75%.

Owen Gleiberman wrote in Variety that "The new movie from Asghar Farhadi, the masterly Iranian director of A Separation and The Past, is another finely cut gem of neorealist suspense."[7] Donald Clarke's review from The Irish Times stated that "The latest from Asghar Farhadi sees another family put under stress after a violent attack."[8] Jo-Ann Titmarsh on HeyUGuys wrote "Asghar Farhadi wowed audiences and critics with A Separation in 2011. Although his next film, French-set The Past, was less successful, the Iranian director’s latest offering was highly anticipated. While lacking the intensity of A Separation, this is an intelligent and interesting film."[9] Deborah Young in The Hollywood Reporter summarized the film as "Masterful particularly in the finale, but not so readily engaging."[10]
