She was coming off her nomination for a Mercury Prize for 2010's The Sea.

The album received decidedly mixed reviews. The album was described as hit and miss. For "I Wanna Be Your Lover" Frank Mojica of Consequenceofsound wrote "Rae’s voice is a fitting tribute to The Purple One’s falsetto, but with her take on “Lover” clocking in at less than three and a half minutes, the question of how she would arrange the original’s instrumental second half remains a mystery."[3] Meanwhile, in a similar review David Mine of Pop Matters wrote "Prince’s tune kicks off the set and is heavy on the synths, blotting out Rae’s fine but delicate voice."[4]

One positively reviewed song includes "Is This Love" by Bob Marley which Andy Kellman of AllMusic wrote "Is This Love” gets a Southern-style, gospel-tinged makeover.[5] And Mojica wrote " This Love” that is the most inventive. Rae slows down the reggae classic and gives it a jazz reinvention that showcases her strengths as a singer and arranger."[3]

On the track "My Love" by Paul McCartney & Wings", it got mixed reviews. Mojica wrote "It’s Rae’s soulful voice that makes an acoustic cover of Paul McCartney’s “My Love” lovely-but-forgettable, rather than merely pointless."[3] On the other hand, Kellman wrote "My Love” gets a simple, stripped-down reading."[5]
