The Beautiful Fierce Females,[4] or BFFs,[5] were a villainous stable of female wrestlers in WWE's NXT developmental territory that consisted of NXT Divas Charlotte, Sasha Banks, and Summer Rae.[1][2][3]

History

While with the BFFs, Charlotte won the NXT Women's Championship

On the August 28 episode of NXT, Summer Rae attacked Emma after losing a match to her and poured Emma's bubble solution in her eyes, after which Sasha Banks confronted Rae over the attack, with Rae saying that all that mattered was that she was getting noticed and telling Banks to make a statement in her upcoming match against Paige.[7][8][9] On the September 11 episode of NXT, Banks was defeated by NXT Women's Champion Paige in a non-title match, and later turned into a villainess by attacking Paige in the ring.[10] Now aligned with Rae, Banks defeated Bayley in her first singles match as a villainess two weeks later on NXT.[4] After the match, Rae cut a promo calling herself and Banks "The Beautiful Fierce Females", or "BFFs", with Rae also referring to Banks as "The Boss of NXT".[5] On the October 16 episode of NXT, the BFFs received their first win as a tag team against Emma and Paige.[5]

The BFFs began to target Bayley on the November 6 episode of NXT, but Charlotte came to Bayley's aid.[11] Despite this, Charlotte developed a villainous persona due to her annoyance with Bayley's personality and after the BFFs attempted to convince Bayley to join them.[11] The BFFs picked up another victory on the following week on NXT, this time defeating Bayley and Charlotte, when during the tag team match, Charlotte turned villainous by attacking Bayley and allowing Banks to pin Bayley for the victory.[12] After the match ended, Charlotte took her place as the newest member of the BFFs.[13] On the December 11 episode of NXT, the BFFs defeated Bayley and Natalya to continue their unbeaten streak as a team.[14] In mid-January 2014, as Rae moved up fully to WWE's main roster, Banks and Charlotte began a rivalry with Bayley, who had aligned herself with Natalya, and lost in both singles and tag team matches.[15][16][17] On the February 12, 2014 episode of NXT, the BFFs teamed with Alicia Fox in a losing effort to Bayley, Emma, and Natalya after Fox was abandoned by Rae and Banks.[18] On the March 6 episode of NXT, Charlotte competed in her first singles match as a villainess in a victorious effort against Emma.[19]

Both Charlotte and Banks were entered in the second NXT Women's Championship tournament in after the title became vacated when Paige won the WWE's main roster Divas Championship.[20] In the quarterfinals, Banks defeated Bayley and Charlotte defeated Emma.[21] In the semifinals, Charlotte defeated Alexa Bliss while Banks was defeated by Natalya.[22] At NXT TakeOver on May 29, Charlotte (who was accompanied by her real life father Ric Flair) defeated Natalya (who had her uncle Bret Hart at her corner) to become the second-ever NXT Women's Champion.[23] The following week on NXT, Charlotte defeated Bayley after Summer Rae made her return to NXT and caused a distraction.[24] Rae's return caused tension between the BFFS, which lost a six-woman tag team match on the June 12 episode of NXT after Bayley pinned Charlotte.[25] On the July 3 episode of NXT, Charlotte and Banks defeated Bayley and Becky Lynch in a tag team match, after which Banks was attacked by Bayley, who stood up for Lynch, while Charlotte did not interfere.[6] In a backstage segment, Banks dissolved her partnership with Charlotte, thus putting an end to the BFFs.[6] The following week on NXT, Rae defeated Bayley in a number one contender's match, earning a NXT Women's Championship match against Charlotte.[26] On the July 24 episode of NXT, Rae received her title shot against Charlotte, but she failed to capture the championship.[27]

Aftermath and legacy

Summer Rae, despite debuting in WWE's main roster two years and three months earlier than Charlotte and Banks in April 2013 as Fandango's dance partner, would not enjoy much success nor any championship win – unlike Banks and Charlotte

In the aftermath of the BFFs' dissolution, Banks started a long-term rivalry with Charlotte for the NXT Women's Championship,[28][29][30] with the two facing each other in a title match on December 11 at NXT TakeOver: R Evolution, which Banks lost,[31] and again on the December 25 and January 21, 2015 episodes of NXT, where Banks was both times unsuccessful.[32][33] Charlotte and Banks' rivalry culminated on February 11 at NXT TakeOver: Rival, where Charlotte lost the championship to Banks in a fatal four-way match that also involved Bayley and Becky Lynch, ending her reign at 258 days.[34] Charlotte failed to regain the championship in a rematch against Banks that took place on the March 4 episode of NXT, thus ending their rivalry in NXT.[35] After Banks lost the NXT Women's Championship to Bayley in August 2015 (at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn),[36] the two would become the first women to ever headline a WWE event (NXT TakeOver), as well as the only two women to compete in a 30-minute Iron Man match at NXT TakeOver: Respect on October 7, when she lost 3 falls to 2 to Bayley in what was also the longest women's match in WWE history.[37][38]

After both Banks and Charlotte were called up to the WWE's main roster in July 2014,[39] the two soon faced each other on July 19 at Battleground, where Charlotte (now a fan favorite) defeated Banks and Brie Bella in a triple threat match.[40] However, Banks was not pinned or submitted and would start a winning streak in singles matches, as well as an undefeated (unpinned/unsubmitted) streak in all WWE main roster's televised matches that lasted for exactly a year,[41][42][43][44][45][46][47][48][49][50][51][52][53] until she was pinned by Charlotte on the July 19, 2016 episode of SmackDown Live in an handicap match that involved also Charlotte's protégé Dana Brooke.[54][55] Back in July 2015, Banks and Charlotte were part of a three-team rivalry between Team Bella (Alicia Fox, and Brie and Nikki Bella), Team B.A.D. (Naomi, Sasha Banks, and Tamina), and Team PCB (Becky Lynch, Charlotte, and Paige) that culminated in a three team elimination match on August 23 at SummerSlam,[56] where Banks' team was the first one to be eliminated, while Charlotte's team would be victorious.[57] Following this, Charlotte became the No. 1 contender to Nikki Bella's Divas Championship, and after a failed attempt to stop her from surpassing AJ Lee's record and becoming the new longest-reigning Divas Champion,[46][58] Charlotte would win the rematch on September 20 at Night of Champions to win the Divas Championship.[59][60]

Charlotte then successfully defended the Divas Championship against Nikki Bella and Paige on different and multiple occasions,[48][52][61][62][63][64][65][66] while Banks continued her said winning streak until she was forced out of action due a legitimate injury she suffered in late 2015.[67] On the November 30 episode of Raw, Charlotte along with her manager and real life father Ric Flair began displaying villainous traits, after defeating Becky Lynch by feigning a leg injury, followed by a distraction provided by her father.[49] This was further confirmed and cemented in January 2016, when Charlotte successfully retained the Divas Championship against Lynch on the January 7 episode for SmackDown[68] and at the Royal Rumble on January 24, both times with her father's interference.[69] Banks returned right after Charlotte and Becky Lynch's championship match at the Royal Rumble, attacking first Lynch and then Charlotte, showing her intentions to gain the Divas Championship.[70] This also started a slow-build for a Banks' fan favorite turn, which was further cemented when she started to team up with Lynch after she left Team B.A.D., whom Banks and Lynch defeated on February 21 at Fastlane.[71] Also at Fastlane, Charlotte successfully defended the Divas Championship against Brie Bella.[72][73] While Banks and Lynch then fought a series of matches to determine the No. 1 contender to the Divas Championship for WrestleMania 32,[74][75] Charlotte made the last ever Divas Championship's defense against Natalya at Roadblock on March 12.[76][77] As Charlotte attacked both Banks and Lynch during their rematch, thus ending in yet another non-decision,[78] a triple threat match between Banks, Lynch and Charlotte for the Divas Championship was announced for WrestleMania,[79][80] where it was announced during transmission that the Divas Championship would be withdrawn and it would be replaced with the new WWE Women's Championship,[81] with all three women competing for it in the triple threat match, in which, with help of her father, Charlotte submitted Lynch to become the inaugural champion at her WrestleMania in-ring debut.[82][83]

With Banks not be seen on WWE television after the Raw episode following WrestleMania,[84] Charlotte started a rivalry with Natalya, whom she successfully retained the WWE Women's Championship on three different occasions,[85][86][87] On the May 23 episode of Raw, Charlotte turned on her father by claiming he was no longer needed, and aligned herself with Dana Brooke,[88] who helped her to defeated Natalya the night before at Extreme Rules in a match that saw her father banned from ringside and with the stipulation that she would have lost the title, had her father interfered yet again.[89][90] At Money in the Bank on June 19, Charlotte and Brooke defeated Becky Lynch and Natalya.[90] After Charlotte successfully defended the championship against Paige on the June 20 episode of Raw, Banks made her return on Raw by saving Paige from a Charlotte and Dana Brooke's post-match attack.[91][92] This led to a tag team match the following week on the June 27 episode of Raw, where Banks and Paige scored the victory.[93] Followed by multiple attacks and matches between Banks and Dana Brooke,[94][95][96] it was announced that they would face off in a tag team match on July 24 at Battleground,[97] where Banks and her mystery partner, revealed to be former rival Bayley, defeated Charlotte and Brooke.[98] With Charlotte and Banks both being drafted to the Raw brand on July 19,[99] Banks defeated Charlotte on the June 25 episode of Raw to win her first ever WWE Women's Championship.[100] However, Charlotte (undefeated in WWE's pay-per-view events since coming to the main roster) gave Banks' her first singles match pinfall loss in WWE's main roster and regained the WWE Women's Championship at SummerSlam on August 21,[101] despite Brooke being banned from ringside.[102][103] This was done because Banks suffered a legit back injury, and would be out of action.[104] After successfully retained the now renamed Raw Women's Championship on September 25 at Clash of Championship in a triple threat match that also involved the main roster debuting Bayley (who was ultimately pinned by Charlotte in the title match),[104][105][106][107] Charlotte dropped the Raw Women's Championship back to Banks on the October 3 episode of Raw, in a main event match.[108] At Hell in a Cell on October 30, both Charlotte and Banks made history by headlining a WWE pay-per-view event, as well as the first two women to compete in a Hell in a Cell match,[109] which was won by Charlotte (who began going by the ring name Charlotte Flair)[110][111] to become the first three-time champion.[112] On the November 28 episode of Raw, after invoking her rematch clause a week prior,[113] Banks defeated Charlotte in a Falls Count Anywhere match to win the Raw Women's Championship for the record-tying third time.[114]
