Thakar (caste)

Thakar are a caste of Maharashtra, India. With other castes, such as the Kunbi, Lohar and Dhangar, some families within it form a part of the Maratha community. Primarily a native tribe, some members of the community then earned social status by giving service to residents of villages.

However, the surname Thakar (ठकार) belongs to the Deshastha Brahmin caste in Maharashtra. They are natives of Pune district but can be found in some nearby places of Maharashtra, including Aurangabad. They typically speak Marathi language.
