Tezu is a census town and the headquarters of Lohit district in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh.

All important offices of district administration are present in this town. The present Deputy Commissioner & Collector of Lohit is Sh.Danish Ashraf, IAS. The Deputy Commissioner (DC,also known as DM- District Magistrateor Collector), as the head of Lohit District, is in overall charge of the working and establishmentsof various departments. He supervises and controls all aspects of administrative and developmental activities that are carriedon by the departments in the district under his/her administrative jurisdiction.

The ancient inhabitant of this land of valley and rivers are the Mishmi tribes. The Mishmi tribes have traditions and customs dating back to the times of Mahabharata. According to sacred Hindu traditions, Lord Krishna's first queen Rukmini was a Mishmi Damsel. The major Mishmi God is Ringyajabmalu and the major Mishmi festival is known as Tamladu puja. It is celebrated each year on 15 February. People from all communities and all walks of life are invited to join in the celebrations. The Holy Parshuram Kund is also nearby and thousands of Hindu pilgrims from all over India, and also from neighbouring countries, come to take a holy dip and wash away the sins of millions of births. This is accompanied with a fair at Tezu and takes place every year during the month of January. The major agricultural products are mustard, ginger and oranges.

Tezu is one of the 60 constituencies of Legislative Assembly of Arunachal Pradesh. Name of current MLA (August-2016) of Tezu constituency is Mohesh Chai.[1]

Geography

Tezu is located at 27°55′N 96°10′E / 27.92°N 96.17°E / 27.92; 96.17.[2] It has an average elevation of 185 metres (606 feet). The existing Airport in Tezu is under development and upgradation by Airports authority of India for flight movement

Transport

The nearest airports are at Mohanbari (154 km) and Guwahati (Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport). Helicopter services are available from Dibrugarh to Tezu on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Tezu Airport is primarily used by visiting V.I.P.s and officials. Tezu is linked with the adjacent state Assam by road. Nearest bus station is at Tinsukia located at Tinsukia Township. From this point Arunachal Pradesh State Transport Services (APSTS) buses ply connecting Tinsukia and Tezu. Tezu is not connected with railway as of now. The nearest railway station is at Murkongselek which is linked to Delhi and Kolkata. A proposal to connect Tezu through broadgauge line from Murkongselek via Pasighat and extending up to Parshuram Kund was made. A preliminary engineering-traffic survey for this track has been completed.[3]

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[4] Tezu had a population of 15,014. Males constitute 55% of the population and females 45%. Tezu has an average literacy rate of 68%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 74%, and female literacy is 61%. In Tezu, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Tibetan diaspora

Tezu also has a sizeable population of Tibetan community of about 1500 mostly residing in a settlement called by local name as Lama Camp, Tibetans settled here since the 1960s after fleeing Chinese persecution in their homeland Tibet, till date they have maintained their own custom and tradition, they have built monasteries, health centre, nursing home, schools etc.with fund coming from Govt and other funds.Lama Camp is located in Tindolong about 6 km (4 mi) from Tezu Bazaar and has 5 camps each camp represent different regions of Tibet mainly Kham, kongpo, Tsari and Pemako.

Media and communications

State-owned All India Radio has a local station in Tezu which transmits various programs of mass interest.
