Andre Agassi was the reigning gold medalist having won in 1996. He did not participate in the Games. Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia defeated unseeded Tommy Haas of Germany 7–6^(7–4), 3–6, 6–2, 4–6, 6–3 in the final. Arnaud Di Pasquale of France won the bronze medal.
