Telia Carrier, formerly named TeliaSonera International Carrier (TSIC), is an international provider of telecommunication services based in Stockholm, Sweden. It is wholly owned by Telia Company, the largest telecommunications group in the Nordic and Baltic regions. It is listed on the Stockholm and Helsinki Stock Exchanges. It is a tier 1 network provider, assigned Autonomous System number AS1299. By the end of 2014, Telia was the second largest carrier in the world.[2]

Services

The core business of Telia Carrier is to provide fiber-based telecommunications services and infrastructure. The company is an IP connectivity supplier globally and the largest in Europe.[3] It also provides services to broadcast media, education and online gaming companies.

The company owns and operates a 43000km fiber network, which covers 200 points of presence in cities in 59 countries of Europe, North America and Asia.[4] The network is centrally managed and monitored and optimized from Network Operations Centers 24/7/365.

Customers

The company's customer base is mainly wholesale and includes the telecoms service providers ViaSat[5] and Rostelecom,[6] the content providers Facebook,[7] Populis,[8] TwitchTV,[9] Activision Blizzard,[10] and the content delivery networks CDNetworks.[11][12] In May 2012, TeliaSonera International Carrier announced it had been selected to build and manage a pan-European optical network for Facebook.[13] The multi-terabit optical network will allow Facebook to serve users in Africa, Middle East and Europe from a data center in Luleå, Sweden, near the Arctic Circle.

Awards and recognition

In November 2011, the company won "Best Pan-European Wholesale Offering" at the annual Capacity Awards [14] as well as "Best Wholesale Carrier" at the World Communication Awards (WCA). Telia Carrier also received the latter in 2007 and 2009 – and has been a finalist in this category every year since 2005.

In addition, WCA recognized the company for Best Customer Care in 2010 and Best New Service for Child Safeguard, a tool to deny access to websites carrying images of child sexual abuse, in 2009.

In 2011 Telia Carrier also won an award at the eco Gala from the Germany ISP industry.[15]

First terabit optical trial

In November 2011 Telia Carrier and Infinera announced completion of the world's first Terabit optical transmission based on 500Gbit/s super-channels. The demonstration was performed on 1105 km of optical fiber between Los Angeles and San Jose, California. The trial was conducted with elements of the new Infinera DTN-X platform and demonstrated twice the capacity of previous trials by adding a terabit of bandwidth to a route carrying 300Gbit/s production capacity.

Corporate community support

Since 2008, Telia Carrier has donated free service to the Wikimedia Foundation, being the only global tier 1 carrier to do so, as of February 2012.
