Talod is a city and a municipality in Sabarkantha district in the Indian state of Gujarat,
Demographics
As of 2001 India census,[1] Talod had a population of 17,472. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Talod has an average literacy rate of 69%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 76%, and female literacy is 60%. In Talod, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age. Talod has a large population of followers of Jainism, large population of the Hindu faith and a very small minority of followers of Islam.
History
The Ranasan State, was a small princely state belonging to the Mahi Kantha Agency had its capital in Ranasan village of Talod municipality during the era of British India.[2]
Development
Talod has recently seen some high development, including a new building to head the Talod government. Some roads in Talod (espeacially northern Talod) have been paved. Many services are available in Talod, but running water is only available from 7 am-8 pm and 6-7 for all households in the central and southern district. Power outages are frequent from April to October, because of the rain. Mobile service is excellent on all of main Indian mobile networks. Talod has a variety of shops, and shows more progressing over the years. Talod also has its own police force, ambulance service, and emergency call center.
Poverty
Although Talod has a higher income average than some parts of Gujarat, Talod has a slum district and a poverty problem. Many residents migrate from nearby villages for job opportunities. Talod has a lot of space, and a fresh water lake which attracts many poorer citizens for a free source of water, but the lake has had pollution problems in the past.
Transportation
Talod is a major transportation hub for the surrounding Talod village and Mahiyal. The train station at Talod serves trains to Dahegam, Prantij, Gidc Naroda, Ahmedabad, and Himatnagar. Talod is on the Himatnagar-Ahmedabad train line. It is also connected to the rest of India by National Highway 8. Plans for a domestic airport were rejected by the Indian government in 2003 for Talod. The government had stated "It would be a major user of space, create traffic on Talod's already congested transport roads, and would require major land changes which could affect the habitat around it. Also, Ahemadabad's airports are large and can handle the current capacity of planes, cargo, and passengers."
Talod also is a major bus hub, with Coach and Standard Class buses operating from and to Talod
Crime
During the Monsoon season of 2008, three houses were reportedly burgled. Alcohol is also banned in Gujarat, but Talod is a stop on the secret alcohol selling network. On 23 December, a man was robbed of ten million rupees.
Districts
Although the Talod government does not recognize different districts. Talodees do call the sections of Talod names. The Tower district, is the main business district. It is also the site of petrol pumps, mobile dealers, two- and three-star restaurants, panwallahs, electronics stores, fast food restaurants, banks, various shops, and the headquarters of the Talod government. The Tower district is the most developed district of Talod. The central district is a residential district
