Ironfist Chinmi (Japanese: 鉄拳チンミ Hepburn: Tekken Chinmi) is a Japanese manga series written by Takeshi Maekawa. It was published by Kodansha in Monthly Shōnen Magazine from 1983 to 1997 and collected in 35 tankōbon volumes. It is centered on the story of a boy called Chinmi who learns Kung Fu through the staple manga method of fighting progressively more challenging foes.

This is the first and most widely published series of Ironfist Chinmi. Published as Tekken Chinmi in Japanese and Ironfist Chinmi in English. A part of this series was published by Bloomsbury UK and is still available from some online/physical book stores. The entire series was published by Kodansha in Japan, and Elex Media Komputindo in Indonesia.[2] The series was also adapted as an anime television series in 1988, which was dubbed in English in the early 90's as Kung Fu Boy and into Arabic as MadressaT El Kung Fu" (Kung Fu School). In Indonesia, the series known as Kungfu Boy.

In 1987, the manga won the Kodansha Manga Award for shōnen.[3]

It was followed by two sequel series, New Ironfist Chinmi and Ironfist Chinmi Legends.

Characters

Chinmi
The main protagonist, a highly skilled martial artist and noble individual, who receives kung-fu training from Dairin Temple and various other masters along the way. Chinmi helps anyone in need without asking for anything in return. Chinmi risks his life on countless occasions in the defense of others.[4] His most powerful technique is the Thunder God fist (Tsuuhaiken), which he uses in dire situations throughout his journeys. Chinmi is known to have a pure heart, not corrupted by greed.[5] Chinmi becomes famous throughout China after recognition of the Chinese Emperor.[6] Chinmi received an "Outstanding Contribution Award" from the Chinese Emperor for many of his significant victories, because he wanted Chinmi to become a "Hero and a Hope" to his people.[7][8][9]
Goku
Chinmi's pet monkey and best animal friend. Goku constantly accompanies Chinmi in all of his adventures, often stepping in at the right moment to save Chinmi's life. Goku is not skilled in martial arts but is very dexterous and intelligent.
Mei Ling
Chinmi's sister who has a small restaurant business in her home town.[10] Chinmi initially helps with this but separates from her to leave for Dairin Temple. She is captured by the Black Flame, a notorious and powerful bandit army, and later rescued by Chinmi. She visits Chinmi from time to time.
Jin Tan
Chinmi's best friend and co-disciple at the Dairin Temple. After initially being sparring partners they develop a close friendship and help each other in local affairs ever since. They have saved each other's lives on multiple occasions.[11]
Old Master
A master who acts as Chinmi's guide and mentor. He finds Chinmi and identifies him as the "Magic Fist" after seeing a birth-mark on his forehead.[12] He invites Chinmi to come to Dairin Temple to learn more.[13] He constantly supports Chinmi during his difficult training, and often provides additional training personally. He teaches Chinmi the Thunder God Fist technique, Dairin Temple's forbidden move.
Fang Zhang
Head Monk at the Dairin Temple, and wisest and most respected master in the region. He is respectfully called Head Monk by disciples and instructors alike, and rarely by name directly.[14] He rarely uses his martial arts abilities, and is generally seen discussing philosophical aspects with the Old Master. He perceives the long-term benefits of events, such as how the flash flood that affected the nearby village would help villagers understand the true value of peace.[15]
Yan
A village girl that Chinmi saves from kidnappers, and later from a flood that hits the village.[16] She is the primary love interest of Chinmi in the series, and is well known to share a deep bond with him.[17][18][19] Yan is approximately the same age as Chinmi, and is a recurring character.
Renka
The young daughter of Military Commander General Ourin, who first met Chinmi during the Tenran Martial Arts Tournament.[20][21] She lived with Yang when she visited the Dairin Temple, and they grew so close that many consider them "like sisters".[22][23] Renka is a fan of Chinmi and has fallen for him.[24] The Emperor and her father are aware of her feelings for Chinmi.[25]
Riki
A blind master and staff expert, Riki teaches Chinmi how to master the staff.[26]
Ryukai
Chinmi's immediate master within the Dairin Temple, and a master of Ki (or Chi), which he uses to strengthen his body and gain immense strength.[27] He trains Chinmi for many years, and after Chinmi surpasses him, he says its what makes training a disciple worthwhile.[28] He is one of the most highly respected instructors within the Dairin Temple.[29][30]
Wong
Initially an enemy of the Dairin Temple, Wong uses the "Poison Hand" technique to cripple the powerful teacher Ryukai, whom he incorrectly thinks killed his brother years ago[31] (his brother actually died of a heart attack during a battle with Ryukai).[32] Ryukai survives the poison attack.[33] Chinmi later defeats Wong who apologizes and becomes a friend.[34] Wong later saves Chinmi's life during a battle with the leader of the Black Flame.[35]
You Sen
An old man and a revered master. He takes Chinmi under his wing until his death a few months later. He teaches Chinmi the powerful Thunder God fist technique (Tsuuhaiken) which Chinmi uses to great advantages throughout his journeys.
Gunte
Chinmi's leading disciple and significantly skilled kung-fu artist. He and Chinmi have left Dairin Temple to tour various cities, and offer demonstrations of Dairin Temple Kung-fu. After being pulled into the Princess Mito incident, he defeats various opponents with the help of the Royal Guards. During a Dairin Temple demonstration, Gunte is chosen as the sole representative of Dairin Temple Martial Arts. Gunte successfully parries every strike of an opponent who uses a foreign martial arts style.[36]

Locations

Dairin Temple

Center of most of the activities, and the place Chinmi was formally taught kung-fu and staff techniques. It is known as the birthplace of "Dairin Kenpo" (Dairin Martial Arts), and located near Nankou Mountain.[37][38] Students and teachers train, eat and sleep within the Temple's grounds.[37] Dairin Kung-fu consists mainly of unarmed combat, and the only weapon training provided is with the staff.[39] Master Riki is the resident staff expert, and is highly perceptive despite being completely blind.[40][41]

Chinmi, his disciple Gunte, his masters Ryukai, Riki, and the "Old Man" live and train within Dairin Temple.[40][42] Dairin Kung-fu gets popularized throughout China due to the feats of Chinmi that quickly become local legend, and due to recognition of the Chinese Emperor.[7][8][9][43] The General of the Chinese Army acknowledges their strength and that "there's a hidden power among them that doesn't exist in the army".[44][45]

Chinmi initially joins Dairin Temple at the age of ~10, but as his capabilities and qualities improve, at the age of ~20 he is promoted to instructor, and given a small group of students to train. His students are San-Chuu, Yukke, Kuppa, Nam-Uru, Yonfa, Koyuu and Gunte (the best student).[46] Jin Tan is also often described as Chinmi's student.[47]

Plot

Chinmi is a boy who was helping his sister in restaurant business. He has a certain talent in martial arts, and used to play with his pet monkey named Goku (named after the Monkey King Sun Wukong) in the forests, causing him to develop great agility. He is prophesized to become a master of martial arts, under the Dairin Temple. After defeating people who harasses his sister's restaurant, an old martial artist from the Dairin Temple (usually referred as 'Old Man') witnessed his talent and arranged him to depart into Dairin Temple. From there, Chinmi learned Martial Arts, especially Kung Fu. It spans from the first to the sixth volume.

Starting from the sixth volume, Chinmi starts learning weapon-based Martial arts, mainly using the staff. He gained a friendly rival, Xu Fang. Chinmi's staff training saga ends at the 8th volume, which continues with the next saga about training with the revered Master You Sen. Chinmi later learned one of his signature moves, also fought against a foreign boxer Dick Stainer, one of the opponents that could possibly defeat him (although the result was a draw), but later Master You Sen died, and Chinmi prompted to go on a journey to master his skills.

The journey spans in many volumes, but starting on the 23rd volume, Chinmi was forced to return to Dairin Temple after the temple was desecrated by a former apprentice of You Sen, the ruthless prodigal Oudow. Chinmi tasted true defeat for the first time against Oudow, but later the Old Man told him the secrets of Dairin Temple's forbidden move: the Thunder God Fist, one that could almost instantly kill the victim. Due to Dairin's no-killing policy, Chinmi hesitated to use it even to Oudow, but he used it anyway, crippling Oudow and prompted Chinmi to leave the temple, thinking that he violated the rules of not killing his opponents. Fortunately for him, he found out that Oudow actually survived and as a result softened his attitude, enabling Chinmi to truly return to the Temple. He is later promoted into a Kung Fu teacher.

As a teacher, Chinmi garnered a group of students, but the most notorious and rebellious was Gundi, though he later becomes enchanted with Chinmi's bravery and virtue to actually be more tolerant with his friends. After reacquainting with his students, Chinmi was thrust into the next saga where he fought the Wind Wolves army of horsemen (Fictional race based on the nomadic Mongolian and Manchurian tribes), who set their sights on Gundi's hometown. His deeds were noticed by the general of Chinese army and invited him to meet the Emperor himself.

Chinmi attended to his sister's wedding before heading to the capital. It turns out that the Emperor invites him to participate in a tournament of martial arts. Chinmi was reunited with Xu Fang, but it turns out that he was brainwashed by an assassin who plotted to use him to kill the Emperor. Chinmi also befriended Dan Dan, a youth experts in martial arts solely based on kicking, and he helped him restore Xu Fang's mind and foiling the assassin's plot to kill the Emperor. Chinmi ended up as the champion and returned to the Dairin Temple. The first series of the manga ended there.

New Ironfist Chinmi

New Ironfist Chinmi (Shin Tekken Chinmi) is a Japanese manga series written by Takeshi Maekawa, and the second series of books in the Ironfist Chinmi saga. It was published by Kodansha in Monthly Shōnen Magazine from 1997 to 2004 and collected in 20 tankōbon volumes. It was published by Elex Media Komputindo in Indonesia.[1]

In the first saga, Chinmi must discover the force that is oppressing the Ka Nan people, and free the people from slavery by defeating their powerful oppressors. In the second saga, Chinmi along with two young martial artists must investigate why communication is lost with a naval base, and must free the Naval Admiral from treason by one of his captains.

Characters

Pu Shin
A clumsy and somewhat useless swordsman, that relies on the abilities of Chinmi and others to save him on multiple occasions. He acts as the comic relief in the first saga.

Ho Jun

The only survivor of the Ka Nan royal family, Ho Jun were not killed by Jirai because she is living in incognito in town. She's the leader of the Ka Nan resistance to bring down Jirai's reign.

Bolo

A fisherman that helped Chinmi and Pu Shin enter Ka Nan. He later joins the resistance

Kiri

Bolo's foster son. Kiri's parents are captured and turned into slaves because they're the member of the resistance

Ga Shin

A Kourin Temple student and a member of the resistance along with Sho Tan. Ga Shin helped Chinmi to rescue Bolo and Kiri, but he and Sho Tan got captured shortly afterwards. He planned the staged accident in the tunnel.

Sho Tan

A Kourin Temple student and a member of the resistance along with Ga Shin. After he was captured, he manages to escape and join the resistance army.
Jirai
A cruel businessman, who enters the Ka Nan region on the premise of setting up a factory to improve commerce, and ends up usurping the throne and oppressing the people of Ka Nan. Jirai runs a secret metal factory and a cannon factory, that he uses to gain huge profits by selling cannon, cannonball and gunpowder on the black market. Jirai killed every member of the royal family save Princess Ho Jun.

General Boru

Jirai's right hand man and the general of the Ka Nan soldiers. He is once a lone warrior that trains by himself. He has mastered the Iron Armor technique that allows him to withstand even powerful attacks or seemingly fatal conditions, and able to break down even walls with his hands. General Boru is also able to mimic Chinmi's techniques just by simply watching him use it once.

Soubi

The ruthless and cruel captain of the Ka Nan soldiers, that always hunts Chinmi to kill him personally. Soubi is a skilled soldier, able to evenly fight Chinmi in a duel, and uses his sword and his 'Secret weapon', a smooth but tough wire with iron balls on it's end.

Ka Nan Saga

The Dairin Temple monks lose contact with Kourin Temple in the autonomous Ka Nan region of South China. They send Chinmi to investigate. During the journey, Chinmi encounters Pu Shin, a clumsy and useless swordsman. They arrive at the border of Ka Nan, and are refused entry into the region. The Ka Nan General orders his men to kill them. Chinmi narrowly escapes a man-made rock slide, but falls into a river. They are rescued by a fisherman, and learn that two years ago, cruel businessman Jirai usurped the throne and killed the royal family. The fisherman helps smuggle Chinmi and Pu Shin into the country. They express their gratitude and leave the fisherman, but the border security discover the ploy and arrest the fisherman and his son.

Chinmi and Pu Shin arrive at Kourin Temple but find it destroyed and deserted. They are ambushed by Ka Nan soldiers, and Chinmi swiftly dispatches them. They notice they are being followed, and the spies are revealed to be Kourin Temple students. They reveal that businessman Jirai closed the Kourin Temple, and banned any "organizations, weapons or martial arts" in Ka Nan. A year ago, the students of Kourin Temple made a last stand against the Ka Nan military, but they were utterly defeated. Head Monk Rainen Fang Zhang was also killed by General Boru during the battle.

Chinmi arrives at the heavily fortified prison factory run by Jirai, and rescues the fisherman and his son before they enter the prison. They escape into the forest on horseback, and take refuge in a resistance movement safehouse. The resistance movement is led by Princess Ho Jun, the sole survivor of the royal family. The Ka Nan army punishes the village near the safehouse, and force every male into the prison factory as slave labour.

Chinmi and Ho Jun meet with resistance members at a secret meeting place. They are discovered by Captain Soubi and his force, but they escape despite being heavily outnumbered. Chinmi stays behind to distract the army, and narrowly escapes with his life. They discover that Jirai runs a secret cannon factory using the Ka Nan people as slave labour. Produced cannons are transported by river. A tunnel connects the factory to the river.

The resistance work on a "liberation plan" that attempts to capture Jirai on the day of cannon transportation. A traitor informs Jirai about the plan. Villagers assemble for the liberation plan, and use primitive weapons to defeat and capture a few guards. Chinmi and Princess Ho Jun fight on the front lines. Despite the secrecy, they are surrounded by an ambush of guards. They defeat the ambush with Chinmi's help, and enter the tunnel. The workers stage an accident to cause a distraction.

Chinmi takes the lead to protect Ho Jun, and defeats many guards alone. They infiltrate the main palace to capture Jirai. Soubi appears and duels Chinmi alone, while Ho Jun and the others fight their way into Jirai's suites. After a gruelling fight, Chinmi manages to knock out Soubi. Chimi rejoins the others and they surround Jirai in his private suite. Jirai activates a secret trap which falls upon them. Chinmi and Goku manage to break them out of the trap, and they chase after Jirai. Soubi confronts Chinmi again, and this time Chinmi defeats Soubi who falls to his death.

Meanwhile, another resistance group opens various gates to let the main body of citizens into the palace complex. Several hundred citizens storm the palace with primitive weapons, but the riot is halted by cannon-fire. General Boru faces the terrified citizens, intending to massacre them all. The mob surrenders. General Boru leaves the scene. The riot resumes after prisoners from the palace make a surprise attack, and they eventually overpower the guard reserve.

Chinmi, Ho Jun and two others corner Jirai, who is saved when General Boru appears on the scene. Chinmi and General Boru face off, and Boru is revealed to be much stronger than Chinmi. After a long and desperate struggle, even using the Thunder God fist once again, Chinmi manages to knock Boru off a steep palace wall. Boru survives the fall, but ashamed to be defeated by a weaker warrior, he takes his own life. The resistance captures Jirai, and with their leader held hostage, Jirai's guards surrender. The liberation plan is a success. Princess Ho Jun takes the throne, and is very thankful to Chinmi for turning the tide. After a rest, Chinmi leaves Ka Nan and returns to his town.

The 2nd saga depicts him of infiltrating the naval base as a spy for the emperor. The emperor has suspected that there were men with other motives and to overthrow the current admiral in order to gain authority in the navy. Chinmi, Tan Tan and Xu Fang were sent to act as spies for the emperor. The trio eventually uncover a plot to disrupt the inheritance of the Admiral position and must save the true successor who is being targeted in a massive intentional friendly-fire incident. This saga spans from volume 14 - 20.

Ironfist Chinmi Legends

Ironfist Chinmi Legends (Tekken Chinmi Legends) is a Japanese manga series written by Takeshi Maekawa, and the third series of books in the Ironfist Chinmi saga. It was published by Kodansha in Monthly Shōnen Magazine from 2006 and is a currently ongoing series, consisting of at least 18 tankōbon volumes. It was published by Elex Media Komputindo in Indonesia.[48]

In the first saga, Chinmi must rescue Princess Mito of a neighbouring kingdom from bandits. In the second saga, Chinmi helps save his love interest Yan from a flash flood that hits the nearby town.

Characters

Princess Mito
Princess of an unnamed kingdom, she transforms from spoiled royal to responsible leader through the events of the 1st saga. She runs away during a trip to visit the Chinese Emperor, wanting to be "free as a bird". She gets kidnapped by bandits and is taken to Zeigan's castle after townspeople refuse to handle such a high-profile captive. Approximately the same age as Chinmi, they both face difficult situations that help transform them positively. After being rescued by Chinmi, the princess is very thankful to Chinmi, and publicly takes responsibility for the entire incident.
Commander Pegu
Head of Princess Mito's Royal Guards and a strong and capable warrior. He joins forces with Chinmi to help rescue the princess.
Durato
Captain of Princess Mito's Royal Guards, and a highly skilled swordsman. Durato initially mistakes Chinmi for an enemy after Chinmi steals an army horse to chase after the kidnapped princess. He joins forces with Chinmi to help rescue the princess. By the end, Durato is very thankful to Chinmi and considers him his teacher, even in absence.
Zeigan
Leader of the bandit town and a tactical genius, Zeigen has a formidable reputation and is widely feared within the area. Zeigen's wife died, and his only daughter ran away years ago, while making it appear like she was killed at sea. Due to this, Zeigan drinks too much, to the dismay of his mistress and cook who care for his health. His daughter returns at the end of the saga with her new-born child, whom he accepts.
Ten Fighters
Ten formidable warriors who work as Zeigan's elite fighting unit. They include a monkey trainer, a Shuhaikken user (like Chinmi), and various other formidable fighters. Chinmi single handedly defeats 6 of the 10, and then defeats the leader Gantei at the final showdown.
Gantei
The powerful leader of the Ten Fighters, he is known as the "Red Eyed Swordsman" since his eyes turn blood-red when enraged. He is considered to be evenly matched with Chinmi, and respects Chinmi until Chinmi begins to irritate him by surviving so long. He uses a unique dual-bladed sword, that can be merged at the tip to form a single sword. He is forced to reveal many techniques of his dual-bladed sword within the duel, including "Falcon", "Flapping Wings", "Falcon Bite" among others. Finally defeated by Chinmi using his own sword.

Princess Mito Saga

Princess Mito was kidnapped by bandits of the Mualong region after she disobeys protocol and goes for a midnight walk alone.[49] She runs away partially due to fear of attending a ceremony with the Chinese emperor, for which she is chosen as representative of her kingdom.[50]

After a lengthy chase, Chinmi and his apprentice Gunte finds the princess taken captive by bandit warlord Zeigan of the Mualong region, and held prisoner in his castle.[51][52][53] Luckily Zeigan treats the princess well and does not harm or mistreat her (it is later revealed that he had a daughter of her age who disappeared).[54] After defeating various guards and thugs, Chinmi locates the princess and sets out to infiltrate the impregnable castle. Chinmi is joined by the princess's Royal Guards, Commander Pegu and Captain Durato of the same.[55] Chinmi defeats various members of the warlord's elite forces, a team of ten, including a monkey-tamer like himself,[56] and evolves his signature Thunder God fist technique to defeat another formidable opponent also trained in the same technique.[57][58]

Gunte and the accompanying team also manage to defeat various opponents.[59] The team intercepts the princess but she is taken captive again by a pair of two men, dubbed the "Pendulum Spider", due to their swinging technique.[60] The princess realizes how many people have risked their lives to protect hers.[61] After they recapture the princess, they are stopped by the powerful leader of the ten, the "Red Eyed Swordsman", Gantei.

The entire team of rescuers are captured by Gantei and his men, and brought before Zeigan, the bandit leader. Zeigan organizes a final duel between champions Chinmi and Gantei, and if Chinmi wins, the princess will be set free. Gantei ferociously attacks Chinmi using his Black Wing technique, that involves attacks carried out during somersaults using two detachable swords. Exhausted with the previous battles, Chinmi is forced to fight "With All Of One's Strength" (Ch. 35) to defeat Gantei in a climatic last battle.[62][63][64] Completely exhausted, Chinmi collapses on the battlefield shortly after defeating Gantei.

It is revealed that Zeigan, the bandit leader and a tactical genius had organized the final battle between Chinmi and Gantei, such that he would benefit regardless of who won.[65] If Gantei won, Zeigan would keep the princess captive and bargain with her kingdom for her release. And if Chinmi won, Gantei, the leader of an illegal narcotics trade operation running without Zeigan's permission, would be defeated, cleaning up his region.[66][67]

Princess Mito is released by Zeigan with the words "This might be a lawless land, but we keep our word".[68] He further states "The line between good and evil are not so easy to define; A man who steals to avoid starvation; And a man who kills to save his own life; There are many who have lived a privileged life and have never seen the real world".[69] He leaves her with the advice "Always keep your eyes and heart close to the ground."[70] Princess Mito is very thankful to everyone who rescued her, especially Chinmi, as she fell unconscious during the final battle.[71] They leave Zeigan's castle and upon reaching their caravan, the princess publicly takes responsibility for the incident.[72] Zeigan's daughter also returns after 4 years, with her newborn child, asking Zeigan to name him/her.[73] The princess decides to continue to journey towards the capital of China, to meet with the Chinese Emperor despite losing the gifts they carried for him.[74] Overjoyed with his daughter's return, Zeigan returns the stolen gifts and promises the princess protection while within his lands.[75]

In a quiet moment, Princess Mito visits Chinmi in his room and personally invites him and his disciple Gunte to her kingdom, calling Chinmi their "Saviour".[76] She kisses Chinmi on the cheek saying "This is the last time we'll be able to meet in private".[77][78] She leaves quickly, saying she will never forget him.[79] After recovering, Chinmi leaves the procession as the entire army salutes Chinmi and Gunte.[80]

Flood Saga

The Chinese Emperor personally nominates Chinmi for the country's Outstanding Contribution Award, citing his various significant victories during the past years. Army General Ourin and a group of soldiers arrive at Dairin Temple to present Chinmi with the award. Chinmi humbly accepts the award after the Dairin Temple monks persuade him to do so. After a public demonstration of martial arts by Chinmi (widely celebrated Dairin pupil) and Riki (master of the staff), the army moves along. Being smitten with Chinmi, the General's young daughter Renka Chan arrives at Dairin Temple to meet him. Unable to take her with him, the General requests Chinmi to find boarding for his daughter at the town. Chinmi requests Yan (his love interest) to house Renka for the week, and she accepts.

Torrential rain prevents movement within the town, and a local villager (called the "Master") notices that the river is draining instead of swelling. He leaves his house to warn the townspeople that a "Flood is coming!", realizing that the nearby river dam is about to break. The Dairin Temple is alerted, and Master Ryukai and various others arrive to help the villagers evacuate. Filled to the brim, the dam collapses, swelling the river immensely and flooding many crop fields. Yan runs to help the Master's family escape the incoming flood. While rescuing his newborn twins from the riverbank, Yan gets caught by the river's strong current and falls unconscious. With no other option, Chinmi jumps in to save her.

Master Ryukai and Chinmi's students build a rope to save them. Chinmi grabs the rope but the bamboo upon which it was tied breaks. Chinmi plunges into the river waters with Yan and miraculously find themselves in a boat stuck on the riverbed, which they use to rise to the surface. They crash somewhat safely into a river bridge. Chinmi's students tie Jin Tan to a rope, and he jumps into save Chinmi. Chinmi pushes Yan into the arms of Jin Tan. Yan is rescued but Chinmi is in dire straits. Jin Tan jumps in again, and barely manages to save himself and Chinmi as the bridge collapses. The townspeople are relieved that nobody was hurt, and Chinmi comforts Yan as she breaks down into tears.

Witnessing the event and the prompt action of Dairin Temple students and instructors, Renka writes a scroll about it, entitled "Chinmi's Heroic Tale". Her father General Ourin is so impressed with her description, he lets the Emperor read it. They both realize she has feelings for Chinmi. The Emperor notes Chinmi's bravery and nobility, saying "He's a man who would risk his life in a heartbeat to save someone else", noting that the flood disaster occurred on the day of Chinmi's Award Ceremony.
