Super Mario Run is an upcoming side-scrolling, auto-runner platformer video game developed by Nintendo for iOS and Android devices. It is scheduled for release first on iOS in December 2016, and for Android at a later date.[1]

Gameplay

Super Mario Run will play as a side-scrolling, auto-runner platformer game. The player controls Mario as he automatically runs from left to right. The player must tap the touch screen to make Mario jump.[2] The longer the screen is touched, the higher Mario jumps.[3] Like other side-scrolling Super Mario games, the player must maneuver Mario over gaps, onto enemies, and into coins to collect them. The end goal is for the player to safely get Mario through the level in the fastest time possible.[2]

In addition to the main game, there is a separate "Toad Rally" game mode where players can challenge "ghost" versions of other players' playthroughs of levels, similar to the time attack modes found in most Mario Kart entries.[4] Playing either game mode earns the player coins that can be used to buy items for creating and customizing their own "Mushroom Kingdom" in a separate, third gameplay mode.[2]

Development and release

The game was first announced by Shigeru Miyamoto on September 7, 2016, at Apple Inc.'s annual iPhone event.[5] It is the first Mario game, and Nintendo's second in a series of 5 titles, to be released on mobile phones.[6][7] The game will launch in 151 countries and ten languages [8][9] Super Mario Run is scheduled for release first on iOS devices on December 15, 2016,[2] and for Android devices at a later date.[1][10] For the iOS release, the game will run on both iPhones and iPads.[11]

The game was created with the Unity engine,[12] using 2.5D graphics similar to those used in the New Super Mario Bros. video games, and was created by the same core development team that worked on the series, with Takashi Tezuka serving as the game's designer and Shigeru Miyamoto as the producer.[13][7] The team was joined by Japanese mobile publisher DeNA, who provided developmental assistance.[14]

Reception

Pre-release

Shortly after the game's announcement, Nintendo's stock soared to just under its recent high point after the release and success of Pokémon Go earlier in 2016, something noted by journalists as even more significant than Pokémon Go, as Super Mario Run was developed in-house by Nintendo, which was not the case with Pokémon Go.[15] After Super Mario Run's release date was announced in November, Nintendo's stock rose by 2.8%.[16]
