According to producer Joel Silver, Joel and Ethan Coen originally wrote the script for Suburbicon in 1986, soon after the release of Blood Simple.[1] In 2005, it was reported that George Clooney would star in and direct Suburbicon. It would be produced by the Coen brothers.[2]

On December 8, 2015, it was reported that the film was set to begin filming in October 2016, with Matt Damon, Julianne Moore, and Josh Brolin joining the cast.[3] Oscar Isaac and Woody Harrelson later joined the cast.[4] On February 1, 2016, it was announced that Bloom Media came on board to handle the international sales for the film, while Black Bear Pictures would fully finance the film.[5] Joel Silver would produce the film for Silver Pictures, along with Clooney and Grant Heslov for their Smoke House Pictures, and Teddy Schwarzman for Black Bear. Robert Elswit would be the director of photography for the film.[5] On February 13, 2016, Paramount Pictures closed a US distribution deal in the $10 million range, with shooting set to begin in October 2016 in Los Angeles, while Entertainment One acquired the United Kingdom's distribution rights.[6][7]

On August 31, 2016, Noah Jupe and Glenn Fleshler joined the cast. Jupe would play Damon's character's son, while Fleshler would play a hitman.[8] On September 27, 2016, Harrelson said in an interview that he would not be in Suburbicon due to scheduling conflicts.[9] As of October 11, 2016, Suburbicon has begun filming in Los Angeles.[10]
