Linde was born in Harare, Zimbabwe, on April 23, 1960, and raised in Durban, South Africa.[1][2] As a 15-year-old, he attended a four-month "ulpan" learning experience based at Jerusalem’s Kiryat Moriah, which he said "cemented my love of Israel forever."[3][4] He immigrated to Israel in 1987 and served in the IDF Artillery Corps. After graduating from Carmel College in Durban, where he was head boy and earned an honors blazer with colors in academics, athletics, rugby and debating, he received a bachelor's degree in journalism and media studies from Rhodes University,[5] where he received the Rand Daily Mail Scholarship for being an outstanding student. He also has graduate degrees in sociology and journalism from the University of Kwazulu-Natal and the University of California at Berkeley. He wrote his sociology thesis on the emergence of Mahatma Gandhi as a charismatic leader in South Africa, at the University of Kwazulu-Natal (Durban), under the supervision of Professor Fatima Meer,[6] and his journalism thesis at UC Berkeley on the homeless in Berkeley. Linde was a popular radio broadcaster for 21 years, working as director, editor, reporter and news reader for Israel Radio’s English News from 1990 to 2011. He served as editor-in-chief of The Jerusalem Post from July, 2011 to June, 2016 [7] after stints as managing editor, news editor and night editor at the Post since 1997. Under his editorship, the newspaper boosted its international stature, launching annual conferences in New York for its American readership and in Jerusalem for the international diplomatic community posted in Israel.
