Stephanie Rose McGovern (born 31 May 1982) is a British business journalist for the BBC. She is currently the main business presenter for BBC Breakfast but sometimes co-hosts the entire show.
Early life
McGovern was born in North Yorkshire and grew up in Middlesbrough in Teesside. She went to Kader Primary School then the Macmillan City Technology College (now the Macmillan Academy). In 1998 at the start of her sixth form studies she won an Arkwright Engineering Scholarship for her potential to be a future leader in the engineering industry (see Arkwright Scholarships). From 1998–2000, in the sixth form, she studied Maths, Physics, Design Technology and Business Studies.[1] At the age of 19 she was awarded 'Young Engineer for Britain', after saving Black & Decker £150,000 a year by improving production techniques used for the Leaf Hog product.[2]
She attended University College London, where she studied Science Communication and Policy in the Department of Science and Technology Studies.
Career
McGovern started at the BBC doing work experience on the Tomorrow's World programme, before securing part-time employment as a researcher in current affairs. She went on to be main producer for daily financial news on the Today programme on Radio 4, before becoming the lead producer of business news on the BBC's One, Six and Ten O'Clock news bulletins, working with the business editor, Robert Peston.
On 27 August 2012 she made her debut presenting BBC Breakfast alongside Roger Johnson.
While one of the main relief presenters on BBC Breakfast,[3] she also presented the main show during the Christmas holiday in 2012.
She has undertaken a wide range of activities in her business reporting, such as bus driving and visiting shops to discuss rent payments on Christmas Eve 2012.
She was heard swearing off-camera in October 2012, which resulted in Susanna Reid giving an apology on air.[4]
Starting in February 2016, she presented Pocket Money Pitch for CBBC. Series 1 consisted of 10 weekly episodes.[5]
In March 2016, she co-presented Shop Well for Less? with Alex Jones, a two-part primetime series for BBC One. The programme will return for a second series.
In June 2016, it was announced that McGovern will join the BBC Watchdog presenting team from the autumn. She will also co-present Can Britain Have a Pay Rise? for BBC Two alongside James O'Brien.
5 Live
In 2010 McGovern began presenting for BBC Radio 5 Live, which moved to Salford in 2011. She has presented Wake Up to Money, and is one of the regular presenters on Sunday evening's On the Money.
Personal life
McGovern lives in Middlesbrough and Manchester. She is a schoolfriend of Kay Murray, another Teesside television presenter.[6] She is a supporter of Middlesbrough F.C.[7]
She is a former champion Irish dancer and still often attends international competitions, where she helps to coach dancers.[8]
