Spiridon Sobol

Spiridon Sobol (Belarusian: Сьпірыдо́н Міро́навіч Со́баль, Russian: Спиридо́н Миро́нович Со́боль,) (1580—1590, Mogilev − 1645, Muntenia), was a printer, educator and writer. Based by him in 1630 under Orsha the printing house became the center of the Belarus Cyrillic publishing. In the title page Octoechos and (1628) for the first time in East Slavic publishing has applied an engraving on copper.

Biography

Spiridon Sobol was born in the city of Mogilyov (now Belarus). Sobol knew Greek and Latin languages and taught at the Kiev spiritual academy. Printed books to Mogilyov, Kiev, in territory of present Belarus (Kutejno, Bujnichi) and Romania. Has founded some printing houses. In the last years of life was monk of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. For a long time the equipment and materials of Spiridon Sobol were successfully applied in many Ukrainian, Belarus, Russian and Romanian printing houses. Has published more than 20 editions. In 1631 he published the first ABC-book in Belarus.
